hey folks

Just been looking through some old halflife 2 pictures and i realised theres no hydra in the final version OMG. I was just wondering what happened to it or if any one knows anything about it.:cheese:

It wasn't fun too fight and many testers got fustrated. I think there was a problem with the animations when it grabbed the player as well.

I'm just going to wait for the big ball of Shasta to rage at this guy.

But anyway, the Hydra was removed due to coding frustration, in the video, it's all scripted.

Cool to watch, not fun to smack around - or, as the case generally was, get smacked by.

The AI was complete, I think. It just wasn't very fun to fight... it could fight npcs and such, but all you saw was a big blue blob before you died.

The coder wants to have it back as an antlion thing, though. And EP2 contains antlions, remember?

The Hydra was the blue tentacle-thing that comes out of the water. There's one screenshot I remember in particular (ah, for the days when I drooled over the handful of screenshots we had) where a combine soldier was skewed on the Hydra's tentacle in midair. Cool shit.

There's some information scattered around in interviews and Raising the Bar on why it wasn't in the final game - it posed a few technical difficulties but mostly it was just not that much fun to fight. Looked cool in action, didn't look cool when you were fighting it.

I wish it had had a cameo appearance, where you see a Combine get skewered from afar, but I guess Valve didn't do that because of Gabe Newell's famous quote and design philosophy... "Cmon, people, you cant show the player a really big bomb and not let them blow it up." That is, it wasn't included because it would be sad to see and not fight :(

Oh, i gotcha. . and i'm surprised there aren't any mods for the game that include it or something. . .

If Valve can't code fix it, I'm sure some college students can!

I'm not kidding, look at Natural-Selection! *Sure he's not a college student, but still, NS is a pretty fkn polished game.

On youtube you can find some nice videos of the hydra, but I don't think I can post the link, because it's from the leak.

there was a mod called 'missinginformationmod' but it was removed.

That is correct, please don't :p

actually i have MI on my pc right now. . . i just havent played it yet, maybe it's in there : )

Actually, there could be a way to include it but not fight it... but it'd be like repeating the Tentacles thing from the original HL1.

I personally hated that level...drove me crazy.***nning back and forth here and there.

How exactly was the player intended to kill the hydra? or did its development never get that far?

I loved it. It my mind I assigned it more AI than it actually had. Good level design, especially the 'tossing grenades to distract it' thing.

Now, if they hydra had worked on sight instead, or something... you could've used the gravity gun to set up some stuff to hide behind it as you slowly moved from door to door, or something.

Eh, i dunno.

Maybe you put alot of gas barrels next to it, then exploded them, and evaporated it.

We all like hydra but hydra is too .nvm im writin this on a psP :D

who knows, but if Valve says it was a sucky enemy, then it prolly was, they have a good eye for that kind of thing.

It could be a little less noisy though...

KLANG KLANG KLANG KLANG KLANG KLANG KLANG KLANG

I loved the tentacles. The silent atmosphere with the clangs was perfect I thought. Watching those blades search around for you and randomly touch areas around you was quite invigorating. It's a feeling that is quite unique to that...uh....'battle'.

Eh, i dunno.

Reminds me of the cardboard box in mgs2 and how the guards never caught on even starting at one side of the room and ending up at the other end :D

Yeah. but the hydra is probably extremely stupid in that regard. :D

It could only sense movement, perhaps.

It could sense electrical signals, or heat, thus you have to drain your hev suit of power before walking past, or roll yourself in mud beforehand *cough* predator *cough*

Yea in some interviews Valve mention that the Hydra displayed really erratic behaviour when interacting with NPCs

"What ever happened to the Hydra?"

"He's now staring in such famous movies as, 'Japanese Hentai Pt. 1, Japanese Hentai House, and Hentai Galore!'"
