I literally smile when I see a well placed emoticon, what is it about these silly little smiley's that can so easily brighten someone's day? My favorites, the one's that really make me laugh out loud are these:

The emotion it displays is so accurate for a lot of the interwebs, it's hard to describe, but it says "lol, you tard".

it conveys the emotion of horror/surprise so well and if placed right can often be funny ..like when you post something (story, news item) that's completely insane and then follow it with just a :O ..it's so understated and is a good contrast to whatever horrible story you've just posted
