What to upgrade?

Got 2gb of budget RAM and an Nvidia 7800GT.

CPU is an AMD X2 4800+

I'm thinking 3 or 4 gig of really good RAM and a new GFX card?

What would you recommend/do?

I'd try just a new gfx card first - 2 gig of memory should be fine at the mo (unless you run Vista, which wants 700 meg just to do nothing!)

A new card would be a good start. Then go from there.

Video card. I have the 7800GTX, and it plays most games pretty well. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (SOC + CS) and Crysis are a few of the newer games that really kill it (meaning: the settings need to be turned way down), but given your current system, I think a new card is the way to go (and really good cards are dang cheap now, too!)

they really are.. there are so many to choose from too.. a good 8800 or 9800 can run you as low as 125. i paid more for an ATI x1600 pro when it was new ( close to like 185 or something )

I've got an Asus a8n-sli mainboard.

I've decided to sell my Wii to fund the upgrades.

I'm thinking of putting in a quad core AMD CPU and a 9800GT.

I don't think my board will take one of the new intel CPUs, unless I'm wrong? Anyone know for sure?

A quad core most likely won't benefit you right now you're interested in gaming. And no, you can't put an intel chip on an AMD board. In fact - I believe your MB is a socket 939, in which case you won't even be able to put *any* of the latest AMD processors (socket AM2/AM2+). What's your budget?

I would sub in a ATI Radeon 4850 graphics card. Really good bang for the buck. If you shop around, I've seen the 4850 around $115 including shipping, which is a smoking deal. The link below was the best price I could find on newegg.

Thanks for your input so far guys.

I have looked at a completely new build, but think I'll go with a decent GFX card, and in a month or 2, get a new motherboard and quad core Intel processor. This way I can enjoy the GFX card and then put it in the new machine.

Which is a better deal?

I am not that interested in Far Cry 2, but is it worth paying an extra ?50 to go from a 9800GTX+ to a 260?

Should have gone with the XFX one. It's cheaper, has a 216 processor and performs much better.
Not to mention, you get Far Cry 2 with it.
