Society's future moto will be-

War Is Peace.
Freedom is Slavery.
Ignorance is Strength.

Orwell will be right, just you wait! Big Brother is watching you!

Other.

Even though history doesn't repeat itself, and even if the world reaches political stability, the human race will never cease to be on a quest for the next challenge.

Who will be the next president? What will replace cars? Would electricity be repaired? How automated will our lives become? How can new innovations contribute to making my life all the more easier, and to military warfare? Who will be the first nation to colonize Mars? Finders keepers, losers weepers? Who will be the second nation to colonize Mars? Will I ever become bored of living in such a dwarf-like place such as Earth? Should I not aspire for a bit of competition, bit of domination, of self-realization?

I think the worst future is where our race is organized to fulfill one singular goal or purpose. I think that would probably be the worst imaginable future.

I'm sure I didn't word that right.

I like the concept in Dreamfall, whereby the countries in the Southern Hemisphere become rich and powerful whilst the countries in the north experience a sort of recession.

Michio Kaku has said that scientists believe a workable nano-assembler will be available in about 10-20 years, but off course this only gives people like us the ability to customize our clothes, we would still need to pay for the raw material to make our own products.

I see a shift in Jobs in the Primary Industry Sector, as well as BioTechnology and Software Programming

As a citizen of Australia I support this.
I agree. when all other nations are too busy nuking one another in the future as well as possible plague outbreaks, meteor strikes, robotic overlords, etc. everyone from the Southern Hemisphere including the Australians are just gonna sit back and be like, WTF? :E I think you people are gonna be the lucky ones myself.

Psh, you OBVIOUSLY never read Martian Chronicals.

well you think of the last 100 years and we've advanced tremendously. who'd of thought man could land on the moon 100 years ago? and cars are becoming more advanced each year with solar cars on the horizon. their making robots for the disabled so they can move stuff by using their mind. the future has no limits. kinda scary how man are advancing so fast..

We should probably teach Ethics in school.

Do tell, and have you? I found the Wiki link for that novel. The Martian Chronicles Am I reading this right though? Did they really think that we would be able to colonize Mars around today's timeframe when the original book was published?:O
A 1997 edition of the book advances all the dates by 31 years (thus running from 2030 to 2057), includes The Fire Balloons and replaces Way in the Middle of the Air (a story less topical in 1997 than in 1950) with the 1952 short story The Wilderness, dated May 2034 (equivalent to May 2003 in the earlier chronology).
That's funny.

That's why in Defcon you can't play as Australia. It just wouldn't be fair.
Also, Orwellian Dystopia! BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.

Well...their stockpiles of nukes where hit and roughly that half of the planet...died.

Only issue with me talking about ethics is that there are many types. I *think* most people here I regularly see discussing these sorts of things are in the "ethical nihilism" category.

"ethical nihilism"
Isn't that an oxymoron of sorts?

I would think so, but apparently not. Read it on an article, though I'm willing to accept I "did it wrong". It was very close to that: two words, one involving a form of "ethics" and the other word was nihilism.

Basically "nothing is 'wrong' ".

Haven't read the whole thread yet, BTW.

While technology will eventually advance enough to cure all diseases etc, nothing short of worldwide genetic engineering can cure mankind's fundamental illness. I don't think technology will create a utopia, because if it could then it already would have. We already have the technology to eradicate cholera and typhoid, but that only happens in rich countries. Human nature will make sure that there are always inequalities and needless suffering.

I don't think technology will create a utopia, because if it could then it already would have.

I don't know how you can possibly say that with a straight face. Advancing technology takes a lot of time, it's not something that happens overnight. We as a species have only made significant technological advancements in the past six thousand years or so. Assuming we don't destroy ourselves, we have potentially millions of years in which our species can advance itself to a utopian state.

A small change to make something better for something is still an advancement.

I's say about 10,000 years, as opposed for 6 thousand.

It's about how long H.S.S. has been around. We ushered in the mesolithic alone. :(

Ahh yeah, probably closer to 10,000 years. I'll admit I pulled that "6,000 years" figure out of my ass :p

I agree. Why does everyone always associate technology with computers, robots, space exploration etc. among other related futuristic shit? The discovery of cement mortar was an advancement in technology. As well as all the discoveries made during the bronze age. Hell, when humans first appeared, sticking a leaf over your crotch to hide one's genitals was an advancement in technology.:P

Just add 40,000 years then you get the correct answer.
Congratulation genius scientists of HL2.net! You've just discovered the formula for finding the correct age of the human race!:

6,000B.C. + 4,000B.C.= 10,000B.C. + 40,000B.C. = 50,000 B.C.!!!! You guys done it! I never though it was possible but you guys have solved a decades old debate in only ten minutes! Holy cow! Don't we have some "Ivy League" talent up in here or what?!?! BTW:I think you guys are wrong and should tack on about 30,000 more years or so.

Cool we should alert a scientific journal.

What? That's when humans first started using stone tools.

Humans started using tools almost immediately though:

How many years have humans technically existed though? I'm wondering if it was over 100,000 thousand years ago.

Homo Sapiens Sapiens? Or the human race in general (homo erectus, such a great name :p)

I'm not an expert in human evolution, but I think homo sapiens sapiens (us) was about 100'000 years ago. But I think the human race as a general thing goes back 500'000, not including the ape-men dudes from 2001. With biengs as complex as humans, evolution takes a long time, so definatly more than tens of thousands.

H. S. S. migrated from Africa 50KA. Sorry, delusional, I was very tired when I posted and was thinking about when we became the sole Human species on the planet. For those not into that, 10KA H. S. Cromagnon died and left us to go it alone.

Because most people are losers who fail at pre-history.
