I apologize if this question has been asked before.

What computer specs will _Half-Life 2_ require from us? Am I going to have to buy a brand-new computer to run the most early anticipated PC game in years?

Mimimum as stated most recently =

1.0ghz CPU
256Mb Ram
64MB GFX Card

However if you want to play it on high settings spec probably = more like:

2.0ghz CPU
128MB GFX card (DX 9.0) e.g ATI 9600
512 MB Ram or more.

Hope that helped.. :)

The game is designed so that you can play it on lower end machines (but with less details ofcourse). Valve have yet to give us more detailed info on that but I'd guess that the minimum for a "good-ish" game experience would be around 1.5-2Ghz, 512 ddr mem and a 64 MB gfx card.

edit: to marksmanHL2 :), I'm pretty sure 256 will not be enough. I used 256 for a long while and then upgraded to 1024 and the difference in UT2004 and FarCry was so huge that I could hardly believe it.

dude if you search a little you could have found this a thousand times. Before asking a question you think may be a repeat just use the search tool.

Sweeet!

OK, those specs are do-able for me. I bought a Dell computer 2 1/2 years ago, and it'll still be OK.

Man, I remember when PCs were out-of-date for cutting-edge games in a year or LESS.

I dunno. It's a Dimension something or other with 512 RAM, an nVidia card and a 2.3Ghz processor. I'm pretty stoked that I'm not going to have to buy a new PC to run _Half-Life 2_. I'm especially frightened by the cost of those Alien gaming PCs advertised everywhere ... now THOSE are pricey.

okay.. ur PC sounds like it will be fine for high settings.. but lets say u needed a new PC altogether.. its best to build one urself.. its cheaper that way and u can be selective about what goes into the new PC.

now if u don't know anything about PC's, then get a friend to help u out.. hell even going to a local Computer store is cheaper than purchasing anything from Alienware.

Dell charges more for parts, software and installation to those who don't want to put together computers themselves, and worry about hardware and software incompatibilities -- like me, 2 1/2 years ago.

I think it's way cool that you built your computer yourself; I've done so in the past.

I built my own car out of straw and cow dung. The flies act as a wonderful non-oxidixing paint job, and they drown out the sound of my feet thumping on the ground as I drive.

exactly what type of nvidia card is it?

I bet it's 5200.. if so, CRAP

actually i've got a 5200 and it's the best card my comp can handle b/c of its pci only slots, and i've played all the recent games and on far cry it runs well with everything set to medium, so i don't see what the problem with the budget card is outside of it not being of the top 9600 or above class, i got what i payed for.

Oh heck yeah ...

well, hopefully it's not lower than the 5200 class, atleast that low-end card supports dx9 features
