Can someone please tell me where the combine came from? Im kinda confused, im not sure if they came from the portals or they just happened to appear right as Gordon screwed everything up.

I'm assuming they came from single celled organisms, which eventually evolved into a sentient creature who utilized technology to improve their quality of life, eventually expanding across the far reaches of the galaxy with the goal of conquering all life.

In short, they teleported to Earth and swhasm, Seven Hour War.

This forum is a gold mine for info on the Half-life universe. A read through will answer most of the questions you have. Anyway.

The Combine come from another universe. They were a race unlike humans, until they began to depend too heavily on the technology they created to improve their living conditions. Ultimately they expanded and began dominating and enslave more races across their galaxy/universe using teleportation. In enslaving these races they forced their technology upon them. For example, striders and gunships.

They to Earth via the portal storms, attracted to our planet due to the dimensional rift caused by the Black Mesa incident. It is worthy to note that there are no actual Combine aliens shown in HL2 bar the Advisor.

Another universe, eh?

Noes, I doubt it. I thought it was pretty well established that they were from another universe. Note when he was describing it to Eli in his office.

The combine have the ability to jump in and out of universes, can destroy all of Earth's military forces in seven hours, yet failed to stop a man.

A freeman.

Edit - Actually, you'd think that if you had the technology to jump around universes, you'd pretty much be able to destroy it, too. Or at least... iono... it's just a game, Pesmerga, it's just a game.

The Combine defeated a bunch of humans in 7 hours by attacking from behind and had no idea what was about to happen using presumably a gigantic army. A single Combine city with an occupation force fell to the entire city rebeling for a week.

Well we'd already been hacked and slashed by the Xen aliens which you know, turned the Earth into a wasteland. We were stuck in the middle of a couple of cities with a rag tag army. We really didn't have much of a force.

Now that's just silly, Sulkdodds.

Not as silly as "the Covenant striders are unstoppable" or something.
(an interesting quote that came to mind)

Well, come on, someone had to say it. I sacrificed my integrity to do what was necessary.

The Combine Homeworld is, apparently, orange.

How come they can't super-age you like that guy at the end of Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail, then?

You did what no ordinary, self respecting forumer could ever do.

I don't think that was their homeworld.

Combine...universe...galaxy...Black Mesa...so that means they came thru the storm caused by Back mesa...what i really want to know is if they charged at earth and started fighting like xiao or they dropped in slowly and stealthily and attacked earth...

Tells alot aboot their strenght M'kay

Azner: Citadels simultaneously appeared in major cities and belched out clouds of Synth.

Why not? It's what Breen was going to teleport into.

You seem don't believe of it. Have you ever heard of M-theory? I think I have waste my breath here with a ignoramus

@Sulkdodds - When soldiers go home, do they take an airplane trip to their driveway?

Sulkdodds said:

It was never actually mentioned. I'm pretty sure they were simply sending him to another Combine controlled alien planet.

But...there's not really any evidence or reason for that.
There's no evidence for it being the Combine Homeworld either, I suppose. Meh.

I'm afraid I don't get what you're trying to say. D:

What? Could you at least try and make sense? I don't mean the way you write; I just don't get you. Yes, I have heard of M-theory. But often, 'the fourth dimension' is identified as 'time', which compelled me to make that deadpan joke (JOKE). Even if by 'fourth dimension' you mean a spacial dimension, there's absolutely no founding for you to be so sure that they're from it and hell, that doesn't even make sense. They can't be from a dimension in the sense (I assume) you mean the word. "I am from the third dimension!" What, are they creatures of pure spissitude and spassitude?

In the Half-Life series, 'dimension' generally appears to refer to another universe as in assorted 'multiple univese' theories.

Also, someone isn't an ignoramus because they don't know all about the intricacies of quantum physics, professor. :dozey:

They come from time? But aren't we all in it, anyway? It must be awfully cramped, to be stuck in a world without directions...No wonder they're so eager to conquer planets. :upstare:

Seriously, the come from another universe. Period. No ambiguity, no objections - a simple, well-stated fact.

What a bunch of pussies, attacking us from behind :D

Doh!

The HL universe is one where multiple parallel dimensions exist. There's no need to get personal when someone questions assumptions like "OMFG it is the fourth dimension, and cannot be anything higher !"

Breen said, "lets see how you survive on the far side of a Combine portal", so i assume he is talking about the slug's homeworld.

Does that mean that if they fought us frontline...we might stand a chance???

Azner said:

not one iota of a chance. The Combine have conquered many worlds, probably thousands. Earth would just be another notch on the their belts.

Argh this kind of scifi story is really getting old, I would really be surprised if I saw a story where the aliens are the victims and the humans are the villains:naughty: .

The Combine control countless planets. He merely said Combine portal, as in, one of theirs - not ours.

In a pitched battle, we'd be f*cked up the ass. Our only hope is forcing them to fight on our terms, our enviroment, ie, cities.

The war was probably fought in our cities... ALL wars are fought in cities these days.

Pesmerga said:

It was, but we were incredibly unprepared and they came unexpectidly.

Aside from the fact that Breen labeled the world uninhabitable (I would think this would also apply to alien slugs, or any living, non-modified creature), everyone is overlooking another critical point: Breen meant to send Eli and Alyx Vance through that portal. Why would he send them to the Combine homeworld? What possible good or torture could come of that? No, he meant to ship them off to some back-universe factory planet where they'd choke and die within a few minutes.

This is the singleplayer mythology forum! This is no place for "facts" and "simplicity!" If the Combine come from the 4th dimension, which is time, that means that they have traveled from the future to conquer Earth in the past!

And if the Combine started out like humans--relying on machinery, growing fatter, and developing telepathic abilities over the eons--perhaps they are what became of humanity, and have come back in time to speed up the process.

THE COMBINE ARE GORDON FREEMAN FROM THE FUTURE!
