Horrible, unnecessary, and ineffective against real piracy. It screwed up HL2 for a lot of people, I remember. They had to release a patch iirc.

No it didn't. Its called VALVe hated it, released a patch to stop it. VUG made them do it most likely.

They didn't hate it without reason. HL2 didn't install at all for a number of people, due to securom.

While I wouldn't say I "like" securom or starforce I respect that the industry feel the need to protect their games from piracy.

You may say "but it doesn't work", and to some extent you may be right, and you may say "but I paid for this", and you will be more right than you know, but it will not make either piracy or anti-piracy countermeassures go away. In fact, both will take turns for the much worse before anything is going to get any better.
