I am asking this question because there is so much talk about all the Valve support for the mod making community. Since Valve basically owns CS, Opposing Force, DOD, and TeamFortress (they sell them at retail) and they will be packaged with HL2 (from what I hear), it will be incredibly difficult for a new mod to gain large fan support unless it totally destroys CS:S and DOD:S in gameplay(very unlikely). That doesn't give mod makers, who want as many people as possible to enjoy their hard work, much of a chance to improve on HL2's multiplayer (I include CS:S, Dod:S, and whatever else that comes with the game as being HL2's multiplayer). Their mod would also have to be incredibly well organized and it would have to be under development for a long time (maybe released a year or more after HL2). It would be very difficult and complex to make a new mod that can come close to the quality of the Valve owned mods.

Because of this, I forsee there being maybe 1 (possibly 2) new mods that come out for HL2 that have a large community impact.

What do you guys think?

I think its going to be the exact opposite, instead of hindering growth, more people will be drawn to HL2/mods, therefore a larger user-base.
look at all the mods currently in developement for HL2... I mean HL2 is THE (or should I say, WILL be) pinnacle of mod-making (as was HL1 in it's time).
thats why HL1 is still alive, while other games simply fade away.

Im waiting on some Doom3 mods... because I already finished it on Veteran, and am half way through on nightmare :/

Sven co-op.

i can't wait for the single player mods. if cs and dod are perfect then bring on more single player delicacies

Well it's the way it should be, when HL2 comes along, I will not be hanging around playing the old DoD.

[SARCASM]Or maybe HL2 will suck and nobody will play the new mods. :D [/SARCASM]

With Steam, expect an even huger mod impact than HL1. They are going to be BIG.

I think there'll be a lot of good mods just because of the ease in which it is to mod HL2

Given the large playerbase that HL2 is likely to have I think any mod for it that is worthwhile will have a better chance to succeed than a similar mod for any other game. TFC was pretty big when CS came, and cs made it, CS was HUGE when dod came along, and dod made it. Natural selection has also become fairly big. The only reason a good mod for hl should not make it is if their main talent gets eaten by valve or some other gameing company.

.bog.

I do wonder, why are people still making mods for HL ?

Nope. I think there are going to be more mods for hl2 than there were for hl1. And more people will equal a greater chance of success for all these mods.......ahhhhh i love the fact that i KNOW we will all get some many more great games after buying hl2 because of all the mods.

it will draw MORE people, because the chances of being picked up and paid for your work..is well...attractive...

I think that the playerbase for Half Life 2 will be humungous. Right from the get go, so many people will be playing Half-Life 2 multiplayer - and with each successive release of awesome mods, the community will grow larger and larger, and ultimately become ginormous. Today, the average amount of people playing at any moment on Steam is 100,000 (and that's with a game engine that is many years old). I think that within a year or two, that could grow to 1,000,000 (as long as quality mods are put out).

Well, at least that's what I'm hoping for ;).

"ginormous" - word of the day :D

Anyway, back on topic. I think that these mods will encourage other mod makers and use them as examples of good mod work. I am sure that great non-valve mods will come out, you dont have to look very far to see mods for HL1 that are great, and advertisement and ultimatley downloading them from steam will only make them become even more popular and widespread.

As I said I can see one or two new mods coming out that will garner large support (although not for a while after HL2 is released) from the entire community, but I just don't see that many new mods gaining widestream community usage. By new mods I don't mean ports of mods already out there (Sven Co-op, NS, and a bunch of others). There will be a ton of mods out there for HL2, but I think that the best ones will be ports of highly successful HL1 mods. That isn't leaving much room for new IPs.

The player base will be gigantic, but will there be enough space for all of the already polished HL1 ports and new mods?

Smaller mods survive today, with the older-growing HL1 engine... =/ So, basically, what the hell are you talking about?
