Well i know its about the contents and not about the packege but still, I'mean Valve does not have to give a cut to publishers or store owners and there is no pakage or printed manuel or CD's.
I'mean will they make mistakes like other dev's, like with greyhawk(an rpg) wich in stores with the pakage, manuel and all kosts 45,- euro's but if you want to buy it online( per download, not order) it kost's 79,- euro's
I'mean doom 3 kosts 59 euro's here in holland, thats 70 dollars or more inc. taxes, HL2 willp robably be the same, well thats about as much as an collector of HL2 in the U.S. kosts, so Hope you people will take a couple of minutes of you're time to give me an anwser or an link to an anwser!!

Condition Zero had a fairly big discount from the recommended retail price if you bought it on Steam and I imagine that HL2 will as well.

Probably about $40 for the normal Steam version.

I think valve already said they were aiming to retail HL2 at $40.

Yeah 40$ in the U.S., I leave in Europe, and most inportantly in Holland wich for soem reason always gets screwed, why I don't know I'mean they don't have to translate it in to dutch or something like with Germany and france an still it costs more then there and comes out later(god****,mother******(*= puting their reproductive organ in one of here orpheses)!!But i'm going of the subject.

But if you buy via steam will you still have to pay for import taxes, and how can you pay because I don't have an credit card??

And will the mods ban me for typing those senored cursings or do you have to type the cursing explisetly with no stars, if yes please warn me so I can edit this message before they ban me.

Well seeing as most online retailers have a lower price then the shops because of the lack of such overheads, Steam will certainly have an advantage in that respect. Whether or not Steam will be able to compete with the online retailers remain to be seen.

It can go one of two ways:
1) Valve try to keep the price low as possible to get as many Steam purchases as possible.
2) Valve charge full whack knowing they'll sell plenty of copies anyway.

Either way, Vivendi get a share of the Steam profits as part of the distribution contract.

Of course I orderd doom III online. Those dutch really rip you off.

Its available for $44 from places like Amazon anyways so I'd rather pay that little bit extra for the manual and box.

They can't make it too low or the publisher would whine. It'll probably be fairly close to retail price. I believe there's info on this in the Valve Info thread.

I really doubt they'd have to pay anything to Vivendi on Steam purchases...

You'd think so but their contract with VU means they still give some dosh to Vivendi. That's business.

Gabe said they get quite a bit more money if your purchase it over Steam since it cuts out packaging, CDs, etc.

Valve is pretty rich. they where able to spend 40 milion on technology, so yeah.. they got it made, only gabe and such..

I don't think the people who work there and MAKE the game, get as much as he does

Gabe doesn't take a paycheck. He set up Valve out of his own pocket, he became a multi-millionaire from Microsoft stock, I believe. He's not in the game business to make money, but to put out good games.

LOL, right. That's why Valve charges $40 for CS:CZ. For a game whose groundwork was laid out for it far in advance thanks to Id(Quake II engine) and a few ambitious mod-makers, $40 is a lot to charge for bots and re-done textures. Gabe's in it for the games AND the money.

Either way if i get it over steam and it's $40US it works out to be about $25 - $30AUS cheaper than if i bought it from an Australian store. I just hope our dollar is still in the .70 c mark come release time.

early on after release i doubt HL2 will be cheaper on Steam.. why?
well i have a few reasons... one of them being the obvious "HL2 being freshly released"

a subtle one would be that Steam is still a fairly new system and im sure its taken alot of financing to get where Steam is today and will be for its HL2 release... meaning Valve need to make a decent profit off Steam sales just as much as retail sales to help offset the finances it took to get Steam off and running.

later (2-3 perhaps 4 months down the line) pricing for HL2 and other games/mods i expect to be a bit cheaper.. but not early on as some pple think it will be.
thats MHO anyway :p

Hmm DR. Freeman

I must admit that you may have a point there.

Just being able to pay in dollars is great at the moment as the exchange rate of £ to $ is great. If it does retail for $40 that works out at £22. Top retail games usually cost £35 on the highstreet and £27-30 at UK based online sellers.

I'm not interested in having a box - I've got too much crap lying around already

It'll probably cost more here in Sweden beacourse of our high taxes, but the release date is probably the same as in the rest of Europe.
