The FBI has recently adopted a novel investigative technique: posting hyperlinks that purport to be illegal videos of minors having sex, and then raiding the homes of anyone willing to click on them.

Undercover FBI agents used this hyperlink-enticement technique, which directed Internet users to a clandestine government server, to stage armed raids of homes in Pennsylvania, New York, and Nevada last year. The supposed video files actually were gibberish and contained no illegal images.

The implications of the FBI's hyperlink-enticement technique are sweeping. Using the same logic and legal arguments, federal agents could send unsolicited e-mail messages to millions of Americans advertising illegal narcotics or child pornography--and raid people who click on the links embedded in the spam messages. The bureau could register the "unlawfulimages.com" domain name and prosecute intentional visitors. And so on.

how easy would it be to send someone a similiar link? rick rolling someone could land them an appointment with the fbi and various torture devices

I can understand the justification to go after pedophiles but this sweeping net method just opens a door to a whole litany of abuse

so who should we send the link to first? Jack Thompson?

Oh wtf. I hate that it's legal to arrest someone even though they didn't actually do something illegal.

FBIrolled?

4chan's been doing that for forever now, although it was always just to freak people out, and didnt actually send any info to anyone. Just never click a link unless several people have already commented about it. Except on 4chan, since you should never click a link on there under any circumstance.

an the fbi will raid your house singing a "you are arrested" version of the song?

"I never gonna give you up, I gonna beat you down, cuz I have come to your house, to arrest youuu.."

I'm tempted to roll out a new thread on the "Windows Optimizer" program that deletes critical system files when installed. I saw it on /g/ just the other day.

They clearly don't understand the internets.

If you are born a certain way, you can't really do much about it. For example, as I was growing up, I liked girls, then I liked women, now I like older women. But I still like young women too. And I assume that when I'm 75 years old, I'll like my 75 year old wife. But I bet I'd rather **** a 30 year old model. :E

personally, I'm not over-concerned if someone is clicking on a link about it. Maybe they are just doing it for kicks or out of curiosity.

I think a lot of people think about rape but that doesn't make them rapists. They need to get it out of their system by clicking links, and not actually doing it.

I've seen movies on TV about children being raped before, what about that shit? You going to arrest all the people who saw those movies?

I'm concerned if someone is the original uploader of an illegal movie, because they may be involved. But American rights are diminishing rapidly. That is more of a concern to me. That and the kids dying every day in Iraq.

Won't the FBI do something about the American dollar plummeting into the ground and stop counterfeiting in other countries so kids can actually afford to live and not have to be pimped.

Because this economy is so ****ed. who can survive from minimum wage? I have to meet you because you are freakin' Einstein.

They did catch at least one guy with CP I suppose, although the ends don't really justify the means here.

Inflation - see Iraq War
Counterfeit in foreign countries - Can't really do much there...
Raising minimum wage - Will raise unemployment within the 'unskilled' labor.

I'm oversimplifying things of course but these are the key points.

This is like those boat scams they pull.

I read about this in my legal textbook. Hang on a second.

Ah, yes. Entrapment.

Heinemann Legal Textbook HSC said:
Under common law the process of entrapment is allowed. The police set up a pretend criminal situation to try and 'trap' a habitual or prospective offender into commiting a crime. For example, the police may set up a situation where they offer to sell drugs to a person on the streets. The person, who may be tempted to take the opportunity to make some money, is then videoed in the process of selling the drugs. However, the person might not be selling the drugs under normal circumstances; then, they are a victim of entrapment. The practice has been greatly criticized in the United States and if used regularly [in Australia] could cause a similar outcry.

yeah, because if you don't offer the shit, then the prospective criminal might not have ever tried to get it. first timers and maybe people that have gotten over an addiction.

And even if someone is the type to have done things like this before, where they may be tempted to take the bait, they might have been trying to stop.

When trying to train an overweight person not to overeat do you place delicious looking fake pies everywhere? NO, because then you are just giving them an appetite for it, especially knowing their weakness. They may have given up pies until you put one right in their face. Sure they want something to eat, but if it isn't there, then they can't have it. Then the craving passes. Eventually, progress is made. And again, I say to go after the people who make movies like that instead.

My way is "keep people honest". You keep your doors locked and keep your money secure and things like that and usually you won't have a problem. But if you lay your money out you are almost asking for someone to take it.

That is why entrapment is B.S. IMO.

There are plenty of criminals out there not to bait ones that could be reformed.

I read in the local newspaper last week that in the U.S., 1 in 4 adult males are in jail right now. It's extremely alarming. There is no need to catch "would be criminals". It's not like there is a shortage of actual crime.

Arresting "would be criminals" even sounds unconstitutional doesn't it? Someone said "thought crime" and they were right-on.

I shall put it through tinyURL

they'll never know what hit 'em!

The FBI suck. Is it even legal to do this? Isn't that entrapment or some-such?

Entrapment is when the government makes you do something and then charges you for doing whatever it is they made you do. They don't even have to force you. Merely being suggestive and coercing someone into doing something is good enough.

Now as for the topic at hand. Usually what I do when I come across CP (and it has happened a few times) is report it to the appropriate authorities and let them handle it. Having the content in my browsers cache is perfectly legal and I cannot be charged for having it there. Now FBI are going overkill just a tad and I'd hate to have all my gear be confiscated looked over and then returned in god knows what condition months later. All because I happened to click the wrong link on a page and then came across some material which I would then report anyway.

Besides the people looking for kiddie pron aren't the ones doing the real harm here (although they do create the market for such goods). It's the makers and distributors who are the problem.

Also: http://pedotest.com/

Some good material there.

As far as I know, entrapment is still legal in the US of A.

With the ability to disguise hyperlinks and a huge number of people on the internet beings idiots... I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of innocent people being raided who clicked a link that said it was something other than what the FBI had intended it to be.

Once people get a hold of that link.

how about they arrest people who are taking the ****ing pictures

Entrapment is a very broad range of activities, which are not globally "legal". This is just stupid. I mean, people click links to places they don't know all the time. The only way I could see this working at all if the url is really obvious, like www.childpornography.com or www.photosofnakedunderagegirls.com

...*/me goes ahead and registers those*
