Those wily mod-makers! Will they ever learn? First, it's breast-showing mods leading to ratings changes, now Reuters reports that Islamists are modifying Battlefield 2 to have players gun down U.S. troops.
Sure, it's shocking to Americans, but it shouldn't be. Evil is relative -- when our modmakers and game developers pit Chinese and Middle Easterners as "popular" villains in our games -- should we really be surprised to see Americans portrayed as villains in countries where our presence might be unwanted? Is it okay to point the gun at them and balk when the sight is lowered against us?

and now the alarmist POV:

Yahoo said:
Tech-savvy militants from al Qaeda and other groups have modified video war games so that U.S. troops play the role of bad guys in running gunfights against heavily armed Islamic radical heroes, Defense Department official and contractors told Congress.

The games appear on militant Web sites, where youths as young as 7 can play at being troop-killing urban guerillas after registering with the site's sponsors.

hmmm as young as seven huh? how did they come to that number? is age 7 the minimum needed to register or did they go out and ask 7 year olds?

You know what? I don't know what to think.

So, Al-Qaeda's using Battlefield 2 to support they're tactics and viewpoints. Ohwell. We use Full Spectrum Warrior. :D

am I the only one noting the ironry that an Anti-American terrorist group is infact supporting america (EA).

lol yeah :P Well there's loads of those hypocrit terrorists around :P
Personally i couldnt care less who plays the badguy. Germans play the badguys in every WW2 game, doesnt make me hate Germans ;)

ok lets get this straight ..it's not fake ..according to the department of defense militants use video games (their proof being the video) to push anti-us hate. They're saying that the video is proof that militants have modded BF2 to make it a tool for anti-us propaganda, not realising that the video in question is actually an american fan made movie

if anything it's a mistake by the Department of Defense for not looking into the origin of the video. Sloppy research on their part, or intentional propaganda

I don't think the department of defense used that video, that was seperate part of the article and the writers own doing. I don't doubt the department of defense told congress about game modifications being used to push anti-us hate though, because it does happen.

fake = hoax
and it's still hilarious

ya it is ..it's almost the same as what happened here:

http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=70837&highlight=doll

the gist of it: someone made a convincing looking photo of a captured by militants US soldier supposedly in iraq ..media sites around the world reported that a US soldier was being held hostage from that photo alone ...turns out it was a 12" Gi-joe type doll

no ..they mistakenly took the video to be of militant origin when in fact it was a fan-made video

heh wrong thread ..I'm assuming it was meant for the free games thread?

Sure was, I edited it. Thats what you get when you have lots of windows open.

rofl, I can't believe they actually think al qaeda can afford PC's that can run modern computer games let alone the games themselves.

Who funds and supplies them anyway?

lol, that would be a disturbing twist.

Seriously though do the intelligence agencies actually know who funds and supplies al qaeda?

CIA? no seriously ...osama is from a very rich family (does business with bush family), he was a playboy in the 70's and had business contacts all over the world ..I'm sure there's still people sympathetic to his cause/plight that funnel him cash ..plus there's organizations that fund raise (obviously not openly)

not too mention that afghanistan was flooded with weapons in the 80's and 90's and the US didnt bother to secure saddam's weapons after invading iraq (including dangerous virii that was looted from the universities and hospitals during the invasion) so there's more than enough munitions to go around

Too bad, the muslim gamer who made the video was now targeted by the politicians and his great name was being badly sullied.

Days were gone where parents and teachers worked together to help children behave properly, this has to stop, the parents always thinks that video games caused violence because they think it is the easiest way to hide their truth for not taking good care of children and teach them to behave well.

Truth hurts, but you have to know it. Knowing the truth will set you free!

Wha?
lol, I have modded BF2 to cast the Americans as the enemy!
Want to know my secret?
I play as the MEC! Hahah!

Ah, alarmist media. Don't you love it?

I remember some guy saying that al qaeda had an African bank account and paid for the weapons by interest....

lmao at the Team America beginning of it :P
That was exactly what I thought was the absolute funniest thing I have ever heard!!! Even funnier than the line itself in the film is the fact that its used here--impossible to take this seriously now!!!

hang on a minute... you mean the idea of the original BF2 wasnt to play as MEC, hijack a blackhawk/tank/APC/etc and gun down the US with their own weapons? wow.... I must have missed something...
