Ironically, I don't have a problem with Shephard himself. I didn't mind playing as him. But now it is time to move on, and for new characters to be introduced - Shephard got his resolution. But no, the Shephard 'fanbase' hammer their fists on the table demanding his return. What difference would it make? What is quite so special about Shephard? It has come to the point that if Valve do bring him back, it is just for the pure sake of it. Why bring him back. He's pretty much just a name. Shephard and Barney are the only ones who really have training, with Shephard being the logical user of bigger guns. I mean, wasn't Barney really low on the rankage? I would figure his familiarity with firearms would end with a basic handgun.

To this day, I consider the Race X to have been a bigger threat than the Xen aliens. The Gene Worm, a creature that would have altered the planet so that the Race X could use it, was actually ON EARTH. If Shephard hadn't been there to kill it, the Race X probably would have their planet right now.

Also, he actually managed to deactivate the nuke in Black Mesa, effectively defeating the Black Ops. The fact that G-Man rearmed it doesn't change this.

The fact Freeman is heralded instead of Shephard doesn't reduce his accomplishments. It just makes him an unsung hero.

Evidently not as the marines had to pull out between Freeman and the Xenians. As you say though, I doubt Gordon would be able to handle heavily armed marines in RL. But this is just a game.
