I need some sort of landmark that represents essex for a project at work ..something that people outside of the UK might recognise ..for london we used Big ben (ya it's overused but people recognise it immediately)..it can even be a recognisable coat of arms or something to do with soccer; team jerseys etc

It's a pretty distinctive coat of arms.

Might help you.

ya I saw that ..but I dont think people would automatically think Essex County ..maybe saudi arabia but not essex county ;)

but thanks

Are you sure people outside the UK have actually heard of essex? :p

I certainly don't know what the hell Essex is. Other than I've seen it mentioned before in reference to the UK.

There's that pier... supposedly the longest pleasure pier in the world. That's pretty cool. Castles too. I doubt people will think, "Essex" when seeing those, though.

I think you'd find it hard to come up with a famous essex landmark or anything really (no offence)

Prob the most effective thing would be an 'essex girl' haha!

how about a pier that leads to a castle that has an arabic coat of arms? that would cover all the bases no? ;)

I wouldn't recognise it :P

Like Terminator said... don't think theres much in Essex that people would recognise as Essex :P

I have to illustrate this spoken audio somehow:

"he then went to essex where he attended bobby charlton soccer school"

he = david beckham

A drunk bird with knickers around her ankles.

ya that will play well to the marketing director at the college this project is for

Have a creepy image of Bobby Charlton, whoever he is... watching eerily over a group of children playing soccer in front of a prestigious looking school.

Close in on his face, and indicate to the viewing audience that he is walking towards them for an unknown purpose. Perhaps to teach them soccer, perhaps to collect their dues. Cut away immediately after that, so it's uncertain as to what it means, and lets the imagination work.

Couldn't you do a Zero Punctuation thing and just flash images?

He then went to Essex -

a map of the UK with a question mark on it

- where he attended bobby -

an amusing photograph of Bobby Kennedy

- charlton -

two people dancing

- soccer -

a sock

- school.

the people both have Bobby Kennedy's head and are dancing in a playground. A football is at their feet.

it's a flash presentation, it lasts less than 2 seconds and cant be about pedophilia ..cuz that would be bad

yes that's exactly what it is but was hoping to avoid doing the map thing ..I wanted to keep the theme consistant and draw a stylised cartoony thing to represent essex just like I did for london

I'm currently in Essex.

Here's the face of our county council building.

Note the swastikas. :O

Also the picture Razaair posted is pretty much the symbol of essex. It's plastered on everything around here.

Maybe you can find a picture of a skanky essex girl/boy however.

What the hell is Arabian about a good old British C-ax?

A range rover, what a few drug dealers got shot in a few years back (The subject of the film "Essex Boys")

Or of course you could go with the alleged "classic" image of the Essex population, featuring a young man in a hoodie and burberry cap driving a small ford packed with a sound system worth much more than the car and his peroxide blond girlfriend in a short skirt and a low cut top.

man why the hell cant essex have something recognisable like the eiffel tower or a mountain with sculpted images of famous brits that north americans may be familiar with

"oh look there's Benny Hill ..and next to that it's ...errr ..James Bond? no it's Hugh Grant oh and look there's the queen! Where's diana, goddammit! she was a saint, oh and they simply must put in the Spice girls, that Posh spice has a very nice english accent! ...who's the fat guy with the cigar and the bulldog?

So then draw the map in your stylised cartoony way.

This thread reminds me of thinking up things to draw for HL:FLC.

As someone from North West Essex, I usually think of rural areas and the Chav-Queen's Lair ('arlow), but I usually get asked if i'm from anywhere near Southend (Sarthend), so I suppose that's the spiritual home of Essex or something. Trouble is, it's a bit of a hole.

If you want something more architecturally significant, the only thing that springs to mind is Stansted Airport. Though there probably isn't any better way to say 'Welcome to Essex, overspill of the nation's capital'

As for a celebrity, my nomination would be Jamie Oliver, the squeaky clean face of harmless Essex delinquency.

whit not just a image of alex of the clockwork orange,is british after all

Southend Pier maybe?
Thing is, Southend Pier just isn't very recognizable. It's not even like Brighton's Palace pier in that it does have 'BRIGHTON PIER' in giant letters along the side.

Why not just show a map of the UK and have an animated dot showing where essex is?

That, or I think any photo of "the english countryside" would do... I mean if the audio is SAYING essex, you don't necessarily have to beat it in.

Here, take your pick:

http://www.lastrefuge.co.uk/php/sitesearch2.php?q=Essex .. just crop out the big (C) thing... ;)

You cant just paint david beckham playing soccer?

I dont think you UK'ers play it. Its pretty much just an American thing with a few foreign players.

Soccer's that game with all the body armour isn't it? The one where you spend 90% of the time with the ball in your hands, hence why it's not called Football?
