Apeture Science Handheld Portal Device = Adrian Shepard?

Forget keeping characters in the past. That same argument could have easily kept Eli, Kleiner, and Barney out of the sequel.

Actually, we never met Eli or Kleiner in the first three games.

EDIT: Actually, we did meet Eli; he used an eye scanner and told you to get to the surface...

Actually, Eli is apparently the black guy who tells you to get to the surface right after the Cascade.

I think shepard should come back for a brief few seconds, and the get steped on by a strider. That way, everybody wins!

Ok, this is bugging me...WHO IS ADRIAN SHEPARD??

Maybe the acronym has a different meaning, and it's just a way for Valve to tell us what's happened to Adrian without much effort.

ASHPD = Adrian Shephard Has Probably Died

:P

one question , is portal the name of episode 2 ?? if yes then i dont understand all those discussions about it :\

Your mam.

he's your granny from the future :hmph:

I don't know , it seems now it would be the perfect time to insert back Adrian.
G-man lost control of Gordon , he hasn't been seen in Ep1. It would make alot of sense for the G-man to bring back Adrian and finally use him someway in purpose to regain control over Gordon.

It would be cool if the ending of Ep2 would include Shephard in some way. That would be a good cliff-hanger ending.

WTF is so great about Adrain.....Every time I see an adrian shepard thread I just want to to shoot the Creator.

I never liked the ending for Opposing Force..which might be one of the reasons I'd like to see him back in some shape or form (Hell even if we didn't play as im). Atleast with gordon, even though it wasn't complete closure in HL1, you knew he was hired for something, and would be perfoming jobs for the gman, with adrian....this is the ending:

Gman: Well.um...I like you and all...but
Adrian:..What?
Gman:..Well..w...we gotta put you in a box :|
Adrian: WTFBBQ
Gman: Yeah we figured you'd react that way..um..well yeah I gotta go. Bye.

You may find it is exceedingly difficult to kill God.

This may be because, as a certain German smartypants posited out, God is dead.

Do report back, will you?

I don't see why he shouldn't come back. He got just as much closure as Gordon did in Half-Life 1, even if Gordon is the main guy and is a tad more fleshed out. They both just got pulled out and put in stasis after the big boss.

I figure the G-man would look at Adrian as his Gordon backup, and Gordon is now loose and of his own free will. It would be perfect for the G-Man to send his second finest (and possibly a little support) to recover Gordon. Why not? WHY?

I want to see Shephard back.. I don't understand the Shephard hate. He deserves another place in the HL universe :D

Boo! Shippi, think about what you are saying for goodness sake! Silly girl. :p

ASHPD = Adrian Shephard Has Probably Died
You get my seal of approval. Listen to this man! ADRIAN SHEPHARD HAS PROBABLY DIED! It's like I've been saying, he probably starved, or his osprey crashed into a mountain, or at the very least he went insane-o.

I'm going to pretend portal guy is adrian shephard whether he turns out to be or not.

I'll sleep easier that way

Reason why Shepherd Sucks (Well, at least for me anyway)

Adrian Shephard stared in an expansion of HL, name Opposing Force. It was... just fine as an expansion in the past but wouldn't cut the line for a game.

Let's see... bad level design, bad story, no objectives whatsoever, random destinations and places seen from HL. Erm, well... Opposing Force is the freaking worst game in the HL series. Blue Shift is better, IMO. Seriously. Screw Shephard and his lame-ass teleportation gun.

You don't generally like a character in a game that sucks.

I must admit I'm a Shepherd fan, but I really see no point in having him in Portal. It's just a lame idea.

You must be kidding not only was it a great expansion pack but Opposing force is many times better than Blue Shift. :sniper:

Opposing force sucked here there and everywhere. Some bits were ok though.

Opposing Force was one of the best expansions at its time. Not quite Half-Life quality, but damn good. How people can say it sucked is beyond me, but I'll leave people to their opinions.

Blue Shift was utter shit in comparison.

I agree with Absinthe, actually.

Opposing Force was interesting, fun, often matched Valve's opus for level design, scripted events (e.g. the opening osprey ride) and set-pieces (e.g. the beach-head assault). Some of its new weapons were rubbish, but some - the human ones, such as the machinegun or the sniper rifle - were excellent. The enemies could have been better, but as expansion packs go OpFor was really bloody good.

Blue Shift, meanwhile, had some very cool moments and was generally solid but didn't do anything new or interesting or astounding (unlike Episode 1 which does these things without even adding that much new content). It was fun, but pretty stale.

Sulk got it right with Blue Shift.

The issue wasn't with the lack of new content, but that it didn't make twists on the existing gameplay or open up new possibilities. Episode 1 didn't have much in the way of new content, but having Alyx as a constant partner changed the dynamic, and it had just enough tweaks to its gameplay to make it feel fresh (ie. flashlight/zombies, antlion holes, escorting, etc).

Opposing force was never really Half-life quality in my opinion. It was so hit and miss, with some lackluster sections and some horrible scenes. It screamed 'B-movie' sci fi. From the trash compactor to the Pit worm, to the Bio-dome facility to quite frankly the worst boss in FPS gaming - it just couldn't nail it down. It had some flashes of deceny though. The exploding walkway sequence, or the closing chapter in the warehouse. Also, I really enjoyed fighting the chopper.

Blue shift was simply a more consistent experience. Whilst it didn't add anything new, and had this...sewer section...thing, it proved itself by not throwing something retarded into the mix, or adding any B-movie conventions. Plus, 'Power up' and the Rosenburg character make up for most of its shortcomings. All in all, I found Blue Shift more enjoyable because it didn't **** up Half-life at it's core. It wasn't Half-life quality though, the gameplay was..somewhat lacking in places, and the design wasn't omfgwtf out there. But it was consistent. Consistent!

I don't see how any additions made in Opposing Force were any more B-movie than what already existed in the original Half-Life. But yah, I'll end there. :|

Valve owns all of the IP and if they wish to utilize any OpFor content, I'm sure they can do it well.

The Pit worm :|
A sort of lame attempt to recreate Blast pit, wherein you had to defeat this cheesy-ass, one-eyeballed enemy that shot a big green laser at you. For an alien that just appeared on Earth, it looked awfully at home in the trash compacter.

Gearbox approached it with B-movie science-fiction IMO, and it was really crappy. I loved Half-life because it wasn't that, and Valve were able to execute it perfectly. That's generally the feeling I get throughout Opposing force, and I just don't like it because of that.

But, Valve have already confirmed Race-X won't be continued. Which is good, not because I don't like them, but because we don't need to see them again anyway.

wow, if adrian shephard ever does come back i bet that Samon is going to have a brain aneurysm of biblical proportions

Gabe- And today we are announcing that in portal you play as none other than Adrian shephard!
Samon-...
Gabe- Adrian Shephard!
Samon-...
Gabe- Adri-
Samon- *Head explodes* like in Scanners

Gabe: It's Adrian Shephard! Adriaaaan Shephard!

I agree that the pit worm wasn't great.

However it was quite cool how you had to attend to a valve and a gearbox to defeat it.

What about the trash compacter in HL1?

Gearbox flush Valve D:

portable portal device is just hard to pronounce

Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator
Apeture Science Handheld Portal Device

...can I assume that the next experimental weapon will consist of a name with 5 words?
