Hey guys,

I work for a pretty big game developer in Europe and we currently need to hire a few talented single-player level designers to help us ship one of 2008's high profile titles. I come from the modding community myself, so I know first-hand just how much raw talent there is out there. But recently I have fallen out of the loop when it comes to the whole Mod scene, and I was wondering if some veteran gamers like yourselves could give me a hand.

So, what are some _GOOD_ single-player Half-Life 2 Mods that have been released in the last 18 months or so that I just have to check out? Who do you think deserves to make a living at this stuff?

I hear Rock 24, Coastline to Atmosphere and Minerva are some of the best so far, confirm/deny? Any others?

Thanks! :)

The single player mod scene has been surprisingly dry, but I can tell you that Minerva is probably the best one out there.

I will have to give The Awakening a try. I also hear Combine Destiny is pretty decent.

Thanks a lot fellas, I appreciate it. :)

hehe, ... you guys just wait :naughty:

SMOD is pretty fun, except for the excessive gibbing and blood spraying.

To be honest, there is almost no good single-player mods for Half-Life 2.

Minerva was fun but...it's not the best. Rock 24 was done by ex-industry developers (from Eidos). I'll just wait for Davido's (DAV) future projects.

the awakening is DAM fun and has fantastic animations, cutscenes and HDR. i can't beleive you people have not tried it.

and Combine Desiny looks good: SCREEEEEEEENESSS

...Are you supposed to play SMod with godmode on or something? I get to the first bit of Route Kanal and the first metrocop with a pistol kills me in three shots.

1) Minerva: Metastasis by far is the best single player map pack (so far).

2) I found Coastline to Atmosphere to be very fun, it has a nice story to it. Although the map design is lacking, but it's still a very good mod and is worth the download.

3) All the different type of Smods that are out there.

I'll bet Black Mesa mod will top this list when it finally gets released some time in a year or two, but that all depends on if there is any new or additional elements in the mod compared to the original Half-Life. I don't want it to be a complete rehash of the original, because I might as well play Half-Life 1. :|

I've seen that they are rethinking the level design and structure, but I was thinking more along the lines in terms of story. Will there be any character interaction? That's my real question, like you see Alyx as a kid with Eli, as an example. Maybe see Azian Vance, that would be epic, but I doubt it.

I'll definately still play it, several times.

Personally that's enough for me, I don't want it to feel too different compared to the original.

There has been quite a lot of discussion with similar things on the BM boards but I don't know what the developers have responded. Seeing familiar faces could work, and would definitely be quite cool, but I don't know really.

I've happened to browse through the Black Mesa forums, one of the Black Mesa developers response "Alyx wasn't in Hl1 and won't be in Black Mesa."
It's a shame, I think it's a great idea. :(

I disagree, Alyx may have not been in Half-Life 1, but she is part of the Half-Life universe. I feel that the game should feel more like a prequel than just a remake of the original, this is the game that started it all. I want to feel a connection to Half-Life 2, story wise among other things. In the future I expect Alyx's role will continue to grow (barring death). I doubt Valve would make a remake of the original Half-Life.

It's a mod, not official, so what does it matter? Also, it can't be prequel.

Minerva : Metastasis 2 is the best I've tried so far. I'm also playing through Riot Act which is decent.

There is also Substance: Gold version which has a lot of good ideas in it like forms you can take and different weapons ect.:D

Barney in HL2 will make an appearance as the Barney banging on the Door at the start of the tram ride, and Eli will be the Scientist that tells you to go to the Surface right after the cascade. (I believe Eli has been confirmed).
