We've got the best soundtrack thread going on, but what about the best sound in a game?

Personally, i think the best use of sounds in a game goes to Operation Flashpoint. There's nothing quite like a night mission where you're crawling towards a bush while you hear 2 BMPS patrol through a town in the distance, the sound of the engine and gears growing louder and louder the closer they come to you. Then one of the BMP's stop and turns their turret/nozzle/whatever towards your direction. Your heart skips a beat. Then the BMP turns its turret away from you, and it drives off. Scary shit. The mission is made all the more satisfying with that final "Boom" after you've safely gotten away after planting satchel charges beneath the BMPS after the patrols stopped.

I don't think any use of sound in a game as ever close to being as immersing as Operation Flashpoint.

Honorable mention to some of Counter-strike weapon sounds. Fantastic stuff.

I was actually going to post just that. The Carbine spits bullets. I also like the sound of the Galil - so mechanical, it tears people up. Alot of fps screw up the sound (and the looks) of their weapons, but CS does a good job.

The Carbine in DoD:S. It sounds so clunky. :D

Half-life 2/Episode 1.

Take your collective groans and shove it.

I loved the EAX effects in Halo pc. They were a bit overdone but it was awesome.

But my vote goes to STALKER.

edit: Oh about a single sound.. the dual barrel shotgun in STALKER sounded awesome.

Lightsabre combat noises. Seriously, sometimes they just work.

The noise that the giant square blocks make in virtually any Mario game.
Win.
EH-OOOH!

The recent controversy on Manhunt 2 reminded me of a certain sound that was in Manhunt 1, the knife-on-throat "thunk" sound. Seriously R* must have used a corpse or something to record that. I don't know whether it can be considered as best, but it certainly sounds authentic.

Allied Assault.

Or HL2EP1 - i accidentally had my volume too high when I entered the walking-along-ledge-by-citadel scene. Things fell off my desk when I used the gravity gun.

...off the top of my head:

Fear
Condemned
Gears of War
Call of Duty series

Can people go into detail about why they think x game has the best sound? Its kinda hard to remember the sounds from games i played years ago, and i'm not the only one who must be thinking this as well.

while not the best audio in a game by any means I found the radio chatter during one of the helicoptor runs in Blackhawk down to be extremely well done ..at least at the time ..that whole level was well done audio wise (too bad the rest of the game wasnt as good) cries of "RPG RPG" had me nervously trying to get a bead on the enemy before he fired the rocket ..when you finally landed that weird mix of helicoptor blades, radio static and muffled voices made it eerie

I chose HL2: Episode 1 because of the Citadel, arguably one of the most atmospheric and chilling locations to grace the Half-life series. Wandering through the abandoned, rapidly de-stabilizing recesses of the formidable structure just dripped in tension. Creaking pod racks, distant explosions, erratic alarms and that broken announcer..."Sin-ingulariy collapse...."

Absolutely awesome.

I like a few of the custom weapon sounds in DOD:S....1 of them for the KAR sounds like you are shooting a round the size of a watermelon....it has a cool bassy kick to it thats really satisfying. Also I downloaded a custom sound pack for CS:S which in my opinion is better than the original.

I started playing jedi knight 2 last night and I also agree that the lightsabers are great sounding

Gears of War for its "meaty" sound effects, and for the occasional funny one-liner.

best sound in a game is when the carbine in any world war 2 game pings on the last shot of the clip. and doors in doom sound pretty cool when they open.

The Call of Duty series has great sound, along with Company of Heroes.

Jagged Alliance 2. Even better in community mods like Urban Chaos or v1.13

Best voice acting ever. Weapons sound great. From the zip of a suppressed MAC-10 to the whip crack of the G3.

honorable mention to Ground Control for excellent sound scaling.

I really liked the sounds in Darwinia. Not to mention it had a great soundtrack too.

HL2 had great sounds in the beginning in the game. All those beeps and stuff, and the deep bass of the scanners. That first 3d menu screen when I first started the game just blew me away with all the great sounds.

I love how sounds in Source games get muffled when they're in the distance. Gunfire becomes "pop pop pop".

Yeah I loved the muffling in Half-Life 2. I remember seeing some combine troops fighting it out with some antlions in the distance, sounded great.

Didn't really care for the sounds in DoD Source though. The muffling of the sounds happened at really short ranges, plus they didn't really make the sounds 'pop'. It just sounded liked the guns were firing underwater or something. :p

The best sound in a game?

12-year-olds shouting meaningless insults down a microphone in CS:S.

Half-life 2/Episode 1.

Yep. Going through the sound files, you begin to appreciate just how much (excellent) work was put into HL2 and Episode One. I thought they came pretty close to actually replicating what things would sound like when they were interacted with in real life. It's got the best sound, hands down.

The thing I don't like about some games is that they make rifles (especially sniper rifles) sound like cannons, when in reality they don't sound like that at all. Except a Mosin-Nagant M38/M44, which really does sound like a cannon.

I have to agree. The soundscapes in HL2/EP1 are simply amazing.

any silent hill game has masterful sound direction. suprised it hasn't been mentioned already

from its amazingly unique sound effects to its very professional sounding yet distinctive music

briiiiilliant

Absolutely, there's alot in there.

Half-life 2 when in the beginning your wandering trough that sewer or so and you hear distance voices of a woman giving orders and then some strange combine sounds. Also when suddenly the citadels begins to activate and you see walls move.

FF VIII
intro
succession of witches

MGS
everything, every sound is great. From the acting to the ambiance.
but to give folks who haven't played it a taste:
Introduction
discovery
Cavern
The best is yet to come

I also remember bloodlines had individual sounds that were really good, but I can't manage to find the ones I mean.

Call of Duty 1 / 2, Half-life, Half-Life 2, Day of Defeat: Source, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Starcraft, hmmm still thinkin..

I don't know why but sound of DEFCON was awesome.
Also I agree with HL2/Ep1.

Pretty much stuff that's already been stated -

Call of Duty series
Half-Life - 1 and 2 both had really satisfying weapon noises and ambient stuff.
Company of Heroes - Artillery - **** YEAH!
Counter-Strike - If only for the fact they've been copied countless times. Always a sign you're doing something right ^_^

The most best sound I have ever heard in a game, is in Riven the sequel to Myst. Awesome sound.

Lightsaber - Any Star Wars game
Syringe - Hitman Blood Money
Cars (with NOS) - Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition
