So I recently moved into a residential building that's about 30 stories high and packed with people. Since I don't have any internet, the first thing I do is go browsing for open networks and there is a great one nearby without any security at all. The downside is that the connection is really slow with a lot of dropped packets. So I figure I would do some of my lowtech hacking and try to see if I can do anything with their router to boost my connection. Of course the password is still set to admin. And when I get in I see that there are probably 8 different people trying to use this one SOB's internet connection. The first thing I do is change the password. Then one by one I kicked all the other leaches out using their mac addresses. I figured out who the actual owner was because after I banned him he must have unplugged his router to restart it and so I made sure to put him/her back on.

I know it sounds like a bad thing to do, but I probably made this guys internet connection 10x faster and now have free internet for me too.

nice....after a month of having my connection become sluggish from people raping my wireless i WPA'd it and named my router "NOMOREFREEINTERNET4ULEECHERS" however "LEECHERS" wouldn't fit so i had to shorten it. nevertheless haven't had a one hack the WPA yet

Hmm. I don't live in an apartment, but my wireless HAS seemed a mite shitty lately. I'm going to WPA it soon (or whichever encryption key type the Wii supports).

you can probably look on your router to see who else is using your wireless

If you're in Singapore, you're going to get owned.

I just set my router to where it only allows my physical address.

Makes things easier.

My wireless doesn't have that problem.

Great when you live by a bunch of seniors with a golf course behind you.

I saw Javert's sig and thought it was his post. :D

Awesome.

Just don't go bragging about it to your flatmates.

so are you planning on making this permanent or are you going to get your own connection.

Heh, I used to have a wireless router, and I didn't mind if people used it or not, as long as they didn't hack my computer.

You dident mind paying for other people's internet useage?

I have a similair story, however it ended a little less satisfactionary.
In my old place I had a wired network in my room, with decent internet, but no wireless. So, if I wanted to sit on my balcony and browse, I had to log in on the AP of the people across the street.
It worked, yet the connection was piss poor, so I searched on the internet on how to improve it. Changing the channel (1-15 afaik) might help, so I boarded their AP and started trying the different channels.
Little did I know of the fact that the top channels were not supported by my laptops' wireless adapter. So, after changing the channel to 13 and applying, I am now using a long UTP cable.

My wireless network had problems finding a path through all that concrete, all that wood, all that plastaboard, and all that DVDs and CDs in my cupboard between my card and my router. So I would sometimes connect to the guys network over the road. Unfortuantly, one day, secured his network to only accept designated MAC addresses :(
