I got it as a gift a long time ago, but the CD would never install. Always gave me some sort of corruption error.

I guess I have a CD key if it came with one.

Any way to download it?

Go download Steam, activate your CD key and you should be able to download it.

Is the key on the actual CD or on the case?

Having trouble finding it now.. :|

.. Found the box but it's empty!

Well what do you want us to do? Give you a CD key?

I'm not sure since EA took over distributing although it all depends on how long ago.

Idk but when Vivendi was there publisher they gave us 5 paper cd holders. The first one was taped shut and I believe the tape had the cd key on.

Beat the crap out of the poor newbie while your at it why don't ya?

Probably doesn't help since I've got a DVD version but mine was on a slip of paper inside the box.

Yeah, same here. And there wasn't even a manual with HL2 retail, if I remember. When I bought the Doom 3 Engine games (Doom 3, Quake 4 and Prey) they each came with big fat manuals in the DVD box with the CD key printed neatly on the back cover. Harder to lose a big book as opposed to a slip of paper, you see.

If you download Steam then you should be able to enter your CD key (in my game it's on the inside of the box) and download it perfectly legally :)

I don't get it why they couldn't print the key on the inside of the box - for the CD version. Instead, it's indeed on a slip of paper on the CD1 envelope. Not only it's a silly paper envelope that's easy to lose, that is also very easy to damage.

But you only need to enter it once anyway.

I only help people with a post count of 5+, and I'd give you my CD key but I bought my HL2 over steam.

And I'd give you my steam account, but I have too many games and I only give my account to people with a post-count of 70,000+.
Which no one has. And when someone gets to it. Ill up it to 7 million. muahahah!

Really operational?

If you haven't got a CD-Key on your box, take it back to the shop. If you lost it, it's your fault. If you've played before, you should already have it bound to a steam account, so remember the details and log in.

Yeah, but not everyone enters it when opening the package for the first time. Example: you have a crappy PC, open the package just to look at it. You'll need the key a month later when you upgrade - you can damage it before that. Or, you open the package, see that the CDs are damaged - didn't get to the point where you have to enter the key, but may have damaged it already.

That's why it's a good idea to make a Word document list of all your CD keys and serial numbers for software all in one place, instead of hunting around for bits of paper.

Well...I personally keep a notepad of serial keys in a known location, and I mean in a real pad. Files on your computer can be lost, or accessed if you get hax0r3d. So only if you are very safe...

Come on, guys. Stop making excuses for him. Think about it for a minute:

1: His CD's are "corrupted". Bottom line - he wants to download the game files. Which would be OK but-

2: He has also "missplaced" his CD key, so he needs one of those too. His words were "I guess I have a CD key if it came with one." Sounds like he's just guessing at what comes with the retail package to me.

So even though he has "bought" the game, he has not got a single piece that you get when you pay for the game: no files, and no CD key. It all sounds way too fishy for me.

I've had my CDs inside the same box since I got it for Christmas.
I only take them out for reinstalls.

How the hell do you lose it?... It's not like you need to keep the disc in the drive.

I smell a warez monkey.

Not my problem. I'm not "on duty" on this forum, and I see no reason against providing real legal advice that works with the retail copy. If he is indeed a warez guy, the advice will be useless anyway. If not, it might be useful.

Nice to be off duty :).

WHO CARES??????

Just because he can't prove that he bought the game makes no difference that we shouldn't try and help him. It's not like we are handing him a warez version.

He might be a complete computer n00b and just not know wtf is going on.

Solver, Cole: "Who cares?" "Not on duty"? I care, because I paid for my game, and don't want to inadvertantly help someone who stole theirs. I don't want to help anyone with any stolen software, and I don't want to see them get any help -whether it actually is usefull info to them or not.

Of course, it can be difficult sometimes to determine if they have a warez copy, or are just incompetent at installing a game. So you need to ask them some questions first.

Finally, there is some satisfaction to be had when figuring out that a little thief is trying to fool the forum members into giving some help, and telling him to fu*k off with less info than he came in here with.

Plus I get a little bored sometimes.

Also, the thing is, it makes YOU guys look stupid when you fall for such obvious lies from people with warez, and start trying to help them. Don't you have any self-respect? Do you always believe everything anyone says without thinking about it or checking it out first?

Think about the situation in this thread. The guy needs the files AND a CD key. That doesn't sound odd to you?

Jintor - I said STOP making excuses for him, not ADD some!

If this guy doesn't take care of his stuff, it's not our problem. It's a good lesson for him to learn how to store valuable things so he can find them later.
His CD is corrupted, so he must have let it out of the box for months on his desk or even on the ground, same with the serial.
I'm the father of two children and i spent much time to learn them how not to loose their things. Now if they loose something i don't replace it and they have to work to pay for a new one.
I play games since more then 10 years and i still have every box, cd's and dvd's, every manual as intact as the first day i bought them. It's easy, you only have to put back the cd in the case and the case in the box and the box on the bookcase when you stop to play.

Once again, who cares?
WE ARN'T HELPING HIM IF HE HAS A WAREZ COPY ANYWAY. THE ONLY WAY OUR INFORMATION IS HELPING IS IF HE HAS A LEGAL COPY.

So whats your argument again?

Jesus Christ.

You people are ****ing dumb. All of you. Please try to use common sense when posting here.

Except Glenn, <3 Glenn.

And there's this to think about too, which you also seemed to have missed:

Those two things right there sum up why I feel it's worth finding out if you are TRYING to help a pirate. Whether or not it actually helps them is NOT the point at all.

Shasta is coming across to me as a real jerk, basically. I believe the OP.

Awesome. In that case:

I "brght" HL source, but my disk "dosnt" work. also, I nd the CD key, coz I "lost" mine. Lollerz omg roflcopter. so tell me where to dwnlod the files and "get" a CD key. I totally payed for everything, yet I have nothing you get when you buy it. But that's not suspicious. lollercakes. kthnxbai

Anyway, at the VERY LEAST, anyone who can lose a CD key that you only ever need to use once, before they have even used it, deserves to buy it again. So he either needs to do that, or make up a better story.

Apart from the fact that re-selling it breaches Steams / Valves EULA, what guarantee do you get that the game you guy on e-bay has not already been registered to a Steam account? Good effort, but I'd stay WELL away from ANY second-hand Steam games. He does need a working CD key too, after all.
