think about it, the whole point of balck mesa was to create teleportation and to collect alien tech. sooo while gordon was gone, the gman and admin got their hands on some new bio tech from race X(striders hovercraft). the US army starts to equip itself much like the combine,(the "alien" language could just be garbled radio trans). Now, in the years (2-3) gordons been gone, the USa had a big nuclear war. we hae evidence of this in one of the E3 vids when Dr. Breen says"last remaining urban centers" now, after the nuclear war, Dr. Breen could have taken over. So war started by USA, ran astray by admin. as for all the head crabs and antloins and such, well after the nuke war USA decided that releasing some aliens as hunter-killers into the wild would be cost effective.

although it's never been formally stated, i think it's safe to say that the game is not based in the usa. it's been said that city17 was inspired by the more gloomy european cities, so i'd say that it's based there.

also, and i'm not sure on this one, wasn't the point of black mesa to collect that mineral (don't remember what it's called) that gordon shoves in the reacter jiggy (yes, that's a technical term) at the start?

Are we sure that LM is the administrator? In the letter all it says is that it's from "The Office of the Administrator. 'OTA-lm' "

I'm pretty sure, can't really point on an expamle now, but i read in some documents about Freeman's employment to BMRF which was singed "Black Mesa Research Faciliy Administrator" and by hand writing: LM
