So you've gone without sleep for several days so that you can beat Half-Life 2. Finally, with the help of your enhanced gravity gun, you've stopped Dr. Breen. Well, what's left?

The unfortunate answer is: nothing. Half-Life 2 is a one way ticket.

Where do you turn now? What game could ever draw you in the way Half-Life 2 did? What game could immersive and keep you glued to your monitor, even after coming off the most intense chapters of Half-Life 2?

This answer is far from unfortunate. This answer is: Descent.

Descent adds a new dimension to gameplay. Literally. In descent, you are free to fly up and down.

No this, is not merely a flight sim, in fact, it is far from it. Descent is an FPS with 6 degrees of freedom.
6 DOF means you can:
Move Forwards and Backwards (1st Degree)
Strafe Left and Right (2nd Degree)
Slide Up and Down (3rd Degree)
Turn Left and Right (4th Degree)
Pitch Up and Down (5th Degree)
Bank Left and Right (6th Degree)

Many of you may think Descent is dead. This is untrue. There are several popular dedicated servers running, and many dedicated players still playing.

If you are interested in learning more about Descent, then private message me and/or respond to this thread. We can arrange for you to begin playing shortly. You will not be dissapointed. I have attached a screenshot of typical Descent III play, in case any of you need some more convincing.

This is a message from a gamer who played and loved Half-Life 2 and continues to play and love Descent. Although the gameplay styles themselves are not too similar, the two games have one thing in common, one thing that has made them ultimately enjoyable to me. You become immersed. I have posted this because I think that some of you would be suprised at what Descent has to offer. I hope that some will respond.

oh my god... from what you have posted, i can tell this game is amazing :O i mean, you can travel in TWELVE DIFFERENT WAYS! And although that's all you've said about the game, i'm sure it's great!

OH WAIT, i just saw the screenshot, and it looks like this game is some sort of DISCO, with spaceships and strange glowing balls and RAMPS! So let me get this straight... in this game, you travel IN DIFFFERENT DIRECTIONS, fly in SPACESHIPS and go to DISCOS. Oh. My. God.

No Valid Arguments Detected. Subject has obviously never played D3.

Abort/Retry?

I'm not asking for a flame war. If you're not interested, then simply shut up and don't respond. I don't want to hear from you. At all.

What exactly is this game? Multiplayer singleplayer HL2 mod HL Mod? what tis this

It's not a mod, it's a completely unrelated game. Descent 3 was realeased in 1999, but, because the graphics were way ahead of their time (look at that shot and compare it to any other game from 1999) and no one could run it, it wasn't played much.

That in itself is already more revolutionary than Doom3's 4-player deathmatch!!!

In any case, I've heard of Descent back in the day. Never bothered to play it then. Never will.

Uh, two different multiplayer games are left.
Not to mention mods.

But thank you nonetheless, Descent promoter!
Even though a Half-Life 2 spaceship mod of reasonable quality would undoubtedly be better, I am certain to buy your disco-themed product because six definitely is larger than four. (?)

Because Counter-Strike: Source = worth playing? I think not. Stationary combat =/= fun.

Why not?

Descent 3 rules. That disco picture prophet posted is BS, I don't know where that came from. Believe me, it's great. Go to www.planetdescent.com and look at the screen shots, and remember D3 came out years ago.

Descent 3 is a very skillfull game, you'll suck after a month, but once you're able to really beat people up, there is a extream sense of pride. But I don't agree that HL2 is a one way ticket. There is plenty of picking out details, and soon, mods.

I liked the Freespace games better than the main games personally.

Oh, and FYI fellow HL2 lovers, I still like HL2 more than D3, but I love d3 also. So yeah, <3

i'm sure the game looks a lot better when you're playing it... rather than these strange disco type screenshots...

but seriosusly, you're going to have to do a LOT better than that to convince people to play. i mean, i'm not against this game- because i don't actually know anything about it. What do you actually DO??? So far all i can see is that you go around shooting spaceships in some sort of tasteless disco, and how the hell is that better than HL2DM- my favorite multiplayer action game of all time- or CS:S, a tactical shooter with lush graphics and vairity of maps? Tell us something GOOD about the game!

Pfft, what do YOU know? 12-directional disco > gameplay-integrated physics.

hehe.. i used to play descent 1 a looot. it was so much fun. i guess i might have to try descent 3 out when i have some money left at the end of the month..

While I like HL2 as a whole is better, I think D3 has a much better multiplayer if you removed HL2's gravity gun. D3 can actually be compariable to Mechwarrior, the main idea is too spend ages gaining your OWN skills (it's not RPG) and whooping ass. But there are alot of game modes.

Anarchy (DM)
Team Anarchy (TDM)
Hyper Anarchy
Robo Anarchy
Monsterball (soccer with a mass driver!)
Hoard
Entropy (Like nothing else. Rox. Well, you basicaly "hack" into the enemy teams buildings and take them over, produce "viruses" etc)
CTF
CO-OP
Instagib (not offical, but huge custom game type)

It was released in 1999, but for its time, It's graphics are very well done. Great lighting and the outdoor levels can be awsome. And it's not a disco brawl, only when everyone us using the microwave cannon and fusion cannons in a small area it starts looking like that. It's mostly lasers and big fat juicy impact morters.

To be honest Prophet, I like how your trying to get D3 known again, but it seems like you're trying to leech HL2 players, trying to convince them HL2 has no replay value.

Yes, Descent 3 is utterly awesome. Moving in the x, y, and z axis really adds a lot to the gameplay - it doesn't even seem like an fps at all. I highly recommend it as well.

I'll try to find a demo somewhere. Rest assured, this game has nothing to do with a disco - it's simply a rather linear (but as we all know, linear isn't bad) shooter set in space. The disco effects you see do not at all represent the actual game - they are just bright flashes from the awesome weapons. I can't really explain it - here, check this out.

hey! descent 3 is just 6.50 euro at amazon.de .. i guess i really could have a look at it.. won't make me poor. hehe

I remember Descent. Single-player was uninspiring. Never did try multiplayer, and it'll probably be alright on 56k won't it? I may consider this...

Suicide 42: Because it's fun.

hehe.. definatly NOT the same thing.. *g*.. the great thing about descent is, that there is no up and down.. there is no floor/ceiling.. flying up could also be flying down.. it's a great way of level designing (well.. i'm talking about descent 1, but i guess it's the same in the sequals)

Sorry guy, decent is no halflife. It does'nt matter how many directions you can move if they all look and play like ass.

I can't believe most of you never played Descent. :|

I use to play the second one all the time with my dad on mulitplayer. The good ole' days....

Anyways I wouldn't mind seeing a descent mod for hl2. :D

Gladly. It's fast paced and intense, with dramatic dogfights.

The demo isn't an accurate representation of gameplay, either. This game is about multiplayer, not singleplayer. Play HL2 if you want single player. If you want multiplayer, however, D3 is definately worth trying.

The gravity gun can only add so much. While no one will deny that HL2 has far superior singleplayer, I think the multiplayer on D3 is better.

As far as the whole disco thing goes, gameplay doesn't always look like that. That's just when a lot of people are using a lot of energy weapons.

And I'm not trying to leech players, I'm telling them that a lot of them would enjoy D3. So few people have heard of it (which I'm sure you can see here).

The important thing for them to understand is the multiplayer experience, and if I remember correctly, the demo doesn't capture that well.

Yeah, it's fine on modem. And your reason to Suicide is really the prime reason I can offer. It's just fun. That's what we game for, isn't it?

No. It's not integrated as it is in a game where it's intended, and the levels in half life aren't built with 6DOF. Try again.

Well, Core Decision, (which is Descent 4 in everything except name, even made by former descenters) is set for a 2006 release, and the shots I have seen are damn pretty. Like, HL2 pretty.

And for those of you that would like some non-'disco themed' shots...

OMG.... you mthink some crappy disco game with 12 directions and shitty junk ships beats the tactical shooter named CS??? and How in hell is a party-themed, multicoloured wanker game better than the manipulatoir-icious HL2DM?

i would prefer to lick a donkeys bottom than look at this game- it looks very very very very very very SHIT AND OLD!!!

hahahhahahahaha cat got no keys n00b

I've played both. You haven't.
You disgust me, maggot. Tell your mommy to up your medication so that your posts wont make you look so retarded.
You are, quite obviously, a Counter-Strike player. What's next, accusations of "OMG WALLHACK CAMPER AIMBOT FAG!" because you can't win an argument?

Prophet why did you register just to be mean to us CS player :( , I mean what did we do to you :(:(. It seems nowdays everyone is mean to us cs noobies.

Wow I played this game ages ago! It was alright, but I'm not sure it makes sense to link it to Half Life 2.

They are very very different games.

damn.. the demo won't install.. the file seems to be currupt.. trying another mirror..

ah.. and DanceMag: what about trying things before judging them? it's not always the latest looks what counts. do you think, counter-strike will be less enjoyable in 5 years just because the graphics aren't up to date anymore? strange way of looking at games..

Well said.

wow, some of you guys don't even know what Descent even is, hell i'm not that old and i remember playing descent1 back in the days, you guys are all big-time newbs

oh and- CS tactical? don't make me laugh. or esle give me a single tactical element that this glorified team deathmatch has.
don't get me wrong CS is all right, but it's nothing more than team deathmatch with fancy obejctives

But Prophet, you said you loved Half Life 2 but then went on to say that having an extra couple of fields of movement meant this was even better.

Which I don't think is necessarily a relationship that will either A) Make people listen to you or B) encourage people to play Descent instead.

It's a very very old and very very dead game...

I would have to agree with you to some extent...CS is tactical when it comes down to clan matches.

I was in a CS clan once so I would know.Hell when CAL told us the next map we was suppose to play we actually had a 2D layout of the map and we would go over it.

Just cause it's old doesn't make it dead.Theres still lots of people that play quake/tribes 1/Doom/Starcraft and they are all old games.Descent maybe old and it may seem dead, but it ain't.Give the game graphics and physics thats up to par with HL2/Doom 3 and it would be alive'n kickin'.

Hmmm.... Decent is more of a retro game than a worlds best game. Imo I think I have had more fun playing Decent 1 when it first came out than I have playing Half-Life 1 or 2. So I would disagree with you. Infact... I havn't even completed Half-Life 2 yet. It just didn't have me coming back for more anything like Decent did. Imo I would rate Decent as one of the best retro games. I never played Decent 2 or 3 but the original was just ****ing awsome. Also everyone is trying to take the piss out of the whole 12 directions but you don't understand at all. Things look completely different every single time you play the game and most of the time when your playing both player and enemy get two totally different feels for the enviroment. This is because of the whole 12 direction system and the fact there is no up or down. If you played the game you would understand but atm everyone just been to be aragant and take the piss.

Thats just my opinion anyway.
