Descent. Because 6 > 4.

Man, so many really young guys here. I'd swear half of them had never even HEARD of Descent.
Although personally I think it already had its time in the limelight, I still acknowledge it was a good game.

The Descent plot is cool too. The SP game it's self is a bit too straight forward (minus a few bad ass bosses that are wacko or trains running at you at 2x the speed of sound) ... but the multiplayer is pretty much one of the best I've played. Up on par with BF1942 (Quality, not style I'm comparing too) and the newer Mech's.

Oh... and D3 > CS

Jon (er, I guess your name here is Prophet), I don't think that coming on Half-Life 2 forums and saying Half-Life 2 is a one-way ticket is a great way to get new players to come to Descent.

I live by Jon, and I played D3 with him sometimes but I got tired and annoyed of playing it.

It IS extremely fun if you get the controls down and you practice enough to become decent at it; but it's not for me.

Don't start blabbing about how 360 degrees of freedom isn't better than the 180 we get in Half-Life 2 - that's the Descent series' claim to fame, and it DOES make a huge difference in playing it, especially with auto-alignment off.

Play it before you insult it. I personally don't like it much but it's stupid to judge it based on a screenshot.

Oh man.
I used to play Decent 1 and 2. Never played 3.
They were great. ;) Multi was great too.

Come into a big room and take a passage in the ceiling. Once you are going for awhile you think you are going strait instead of up so when you come back down you feel completely turned around. :O

Descent was *the* cutting-edge of multiplayer gaming when it first came out. Doom was essentially limited to T1 or better players, but Descent1 played great with 4 players over my modem connection, due to it's asynchronous peer-peer networking model. Descent players knew they were superior in every way to Doom players, and the two communities didn't mix all that much.

I played through the entire game in coop-mode more than once with other people over the internet on my modem, and the deathmatch level scene was rocking. My favorite was playing "Hoard" games with the 3dfx-glide version of Descent2 online.

Anyway, Descent was and is great stuff.

Nah.

Well, well. It’s nice to see that the clueless idiots have shut up, and have acknowledged their defeat by failing to respond. Some hope is restored however, for I see that some Descent supporters have risen to the defense. Every anti Descent argument in this thread was flawed, but not totally useless. They will make excellent examples in my Gaming Documentary. Fellow Descent players, I beg you to start playing again. The latest is not always the greatest.

If Descent had photo-realistic graphics, all of you would play it. Confirmed.

Why settle for less?

Wow that is the worst screenshot of Descent 3 I have ever seen.

Hey and people, Descent 3 was a good game, but PXO cut service (as far as I know it has not been renewed) so you can only play by IP, but correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a GREAT game though, don't let the lousy impression of it throw you off.

Sort of pathetic how that works out, isn't it?

Descent 1 & 2 were great games. I used to play them all the time whenever my dad would bring back a laptop from work (woahhh 486 :P).

Freespace 1 & 2 are the best space flight-sims I've played. Anybody know of better? I suddenly got an itch to play space flight-sims again.

If Descent had photo-realistic graphics, all of you would play it.
You should never EVER say that as long as I am alive and active on these forums.
I played Starcraft for 5 years, as much as I could sqeeze into my day(which was...alot) straight. I made maps for starcraft for 3 years.
Did starcrafts photo realistic graphics keep me playin..lol...like it could do that with 256 colors! It was 2d to.

I never played Descent1-3, so I wont judge it. But please never say photorealistic graphics. The style of the graphics really can change the atmosphere of the game. The first pick you showed gave us all an ugly image in our head of the style of the graphics. Not because they wern't up to date.
If HL2's style was more twords Warcraft Series Style of graphics im sure it would cut this community down in half on the spot. The mood, the atmosphere would not feel right. Now if HL2's graphics were half as good im sure that might only take 10% of the people out if that.

Eventually show did show better pics, which showed us the true style. You should have showed them first.

The style of the graphics can completely change peoples opinon.
Starcraft 1996 vs Starcraft 1998.
1996 - At E3 it was called "Orcs in Space"(Well it was named starcraft, but it looked like orcs in space..its what the people at E3 called it). If it kepts those graphics it would have never become what it has today.

The style of the graphics mean almost as much as the gameplay, they give you the atmosphere, mood, feeling, attachment to the game.

Don't just say its a great game, and tell us to try it. Saying, I liked this game maybe you will like it to and maybe show a picture of what is usually going on, not any odd pictures or things that rarley happen.

Style can mean everything in the world! The quality of the graphics only contribute a minor thing to it.

I mean what if Doom 3 was all purplisish, and had monsters that looked like barney & friends. Yes it might be a true horror game then but im sure no one would play it. Lower its graphics by half and sure people would still play it.

So never make that comment again, its very untrue.

The meaning of the statement was: If Descent had a next generation engine, lots of people would be playing it. People are attracted to good graphics and effects. It was referring to the quality of game engines, not style.

Freespace was ****ing amazing, I never had fun in flight sims especially space ones until that game.

Did you even read what I said? His statement was reffering to the quality of the graphics to the fact that if the first screenshot he showed was photorealistic graphics everyone would have loved it. Which is completely wrong. Which I said up there, and then went to prove what I was stating, and telling what really turned me, and probably alot of us, off.

I think I actually threw up playing Descent 2. The 12 dimension movement was too much for me to handle.

Thats ****in awsome!

Also...someone needs to do a descent mod for hl2!

You know what would be better than Descent?

"Dissent"- a first-person belittling adventure.

I loved Descent 3 and played through it like three times. I sucked waay too much to play multiplayer, but, whatever.

I died a little bit the day I found out that they wouldn't be making a Descent 4. Sure they had their reasons (D3 lost money because it was unpopular and you can't just make a game because it has a micro fan base of really die-hard fans, and there are like three separate entities that claim the rights to the game leaving the situation in deadlock) but god damn if I didn't want the game to be made. Man, imagine what they could do with today's technology!

Of course, then I found Germany's petition for Descent 4 that I put my name on 3 years ago...
Less than 1000 people signed it. 'Nuff said.

Did YOU even read the topic? I said that, not Prophet. It had NOTHING do with the screenshots posted.

Starcraft was an excellent game. It's unfortunate that RTS games arn't always judged by actual gameplay anymore. Just look at all the ignored titles.

I had no idea you could play Discent on the internet.

1 & 2 rocked hard back in the day..

I'm definitly tempted to check this out

I don't know your lasts post confused me, I was ONLY refering to the statement:

I said that, not Prophet.
Well I'm sorry I don't like checking back constantly.

All I'm saying is, that what you said in this comment:

Is very untrue.

I mean nothing more by it, but that the style of the graphics will always mean more than the quality of the graphics.

Then I went on to say about why the first screenshots bugged us and made us "Look Down Upon It".

Not sure what the whoops up there is about.

Regardless, all of you need to give Descent 3 a try. Extended play of the multiplayer mode will prove most rewarding. If you find 6 DOF too complicated, use a config from this page.

For other tips concerning general movement and trichording see this guide:

If you want to see the game in action, watch this good LAN video.

I will...tonight Im dling somtin though but tommarow I will probably get off my lazy ass and dl the demo.

I'm somewhat amused by the fact that the whole "3 dimensional movement" argument was actually the rallying cry for the Tribes series. Nothing more free than being able to leap into the air at any point and soar.

Descent 3 had to be one of the most fun games I have ever played. Not necessarily realistic, but none the less, makes you stay on the edge of your seat. The single player is great, has great music IMO (except level 2 "Bread and Water" / prison thing)... but its nonetheless one of the better games I have played. I hate to admit it, but I liked Descent 3 better than Doom 3. Back in the day ('99ish) Descent 3 was the game that made me upgrade the RAM on this computer from 64 MB to 128 MB, and the Video card from an ATI Rage II to a 3dfx Voodoo 2 1000 PCI. Obviousley, if you check out my system specs ( http://home.kc.rr.com/astump/si-dt.zip ), this machine has been totaly revamped like 2 or 3 times since then.

Other games I liked:

Descent 1, 2, 3
Deus Ex
Diablo 1, 2, 2 Expansion
Doom 1, 2, TNT/Plutonia
Grand Theft Auto 2, 3, Vice City
Half-Life 1, 2, Opposing Force, Counter Strike, CS:S
Quake 1, 2, 3 Arena
Unreal, Unreal Tournament, UT 2004

Complete list of games I have played is at http://home.kc.rr.com/astump/games.htm

BTW... How do you get Descent 3 to play online without PXO? I would download GameSpy - but as far as I'm concerned, it's spyware. Other game tools like All Seeing Eye and Kali require you to purchase them... although I would but I don't know what one is best and would rather not buy Game Spy due to the fact that their marketing is so damn agressive.

PXO no longer exists. The D3 community plays through the web based game tracker called descent3.cx.

You can use the vortex utilty to join these games more efficiently.

Games are pretty scare until late afternoon or evening. The wait is worth it though. There are frequent Anarchy games with up to 20 or more players!

Which is generally the most people that are ever on at one time, excluding special events. Descent 3 is an innovative and well made game, and you should try it before you knock it - but it is not for some people. Like me, for instance.

Descent 3 isn't for those who cannot assimilate a joystick or put a mouse to good use. Almost every person who walks away from Descent is a mouser with a pathetic keyboard config.

Mice are obsolete.

That certinally bring and intresting thing into the gameplay.
I might just have to really check out this demo to see.

Descent 3 was great, though I only played to about 2/3 through. I got it for free, bundled with some hardware at the time. I remember the somewhat annoying, yet fun feature of having all of your weapons scattered in 3 space when you lost a battle and having to collect them all again before being clobbered again by enemy forces.

For it's time, it was quite good. I guess I'm partial to fighting on the ground, not space, though I might try out a Descent 4, if there was one.

Definitely. I wanna find another good space-sim. I got my hands on Independence War 2...but that's nothing compared to Freespace 2 :(
