Does it bother anyone else that the guys at Valve are still working on the levels? Merc said he saw one of the guys working on a level with Dr Kleiner when he visted Valve. Valve have said that the content is complete, but let's face it, it's not completely beyond them to flat out lie to us. Wht do you guys think?

Valve are very perfectionist (which is good) so if testers have been having troubles / didn't like a certain thing, even if it was an extremely minor detail, valve would go back and fix it (like turning a light on) or sharpening a texture. This does not mean the game content is not complete. And couldent they have been working on something like CS: SOURCE or DOD: SOURCE etc. I think that you are disturbed over nothing at all.

I'm personally more disturbed about Vivendi not listing HL2 in any of their release schedules.

In terms of "on-going processes", the tweaking of maps is definately one of them. Sounds get finalized pretty early, models get finalized pretty early. Somehow i don't think maps get finished early.

Or it could be simply that Vivendi dosnt want to get hollered at and dosnt have any idea when half-life 2 will actually be ready. After all remember Sept. 30? They dont know how much the game has progressed since then.

Yeah because Dr Kleiner is the newest character is DoD

That's promising!

Maybe us Australians get it this year and the rest of the world never gets it! YES THAT SOUNDS EXTREMELY LIKELY ! :farmer:

Hehe, yes it would make a nice change...given that we normally get rooted in the release department

I'm personally disturbed by the fact that everyone seems to know so much about the game design process.

What did you expect them to do for an entire month? The game is playable from start to finish but that doesn't mean they won't keep on improving the levels until the very end.

Getting a bit sick of people calling Valve liars...

Thank-you.

I agree. I'm tellin' you guys.....Two-thousand-five.

Hopefully I'll be eating those words. We'll see.

like someone else said but it needs repeating 'Valve are perfecitonists' it is one of the reasons we have waited this long if they are working on a level with doctor kleiner in it then it means that level could be made better in some slight way. Don't panic, we have a 'release estimate' now, lets not fret.

p.s. isn't your name some sick ass film, god it was weird if it's the one i am thinking of.

Valve said the game content was complete and completely playable. They said they are now just tweaking the game. I.E fixing a few animations, adding a few objects here and there. Changing little things basically.

And dude, other then the original release date, when have Valve bullshitted us? Besides they didn't flat out lie to us about the date, they said they were being too optimistic.

Just as soon as they stop bullshitting us, buddy...

Oh please, it's been some time since Valve last majorly f-ed up.

You're just being paranoid. If they say the content is done, then there's good reason to believe that the content is done. Don't even mention their track record. Missing the September release date hurt Valve's credibility, and they know this. I highly doubt they'd like a repeat of such an event.

As more rational people have pointed out, it's probably just level tweaking and other stuff of the like. No need to fret.

No offence dude, but with fans like you, heck anyone one would bullshit.

"perfectionists" OK LET THEM FOR FOR EVER!!! THEY'LL KEEP TELLING US EVERY YEAR THAT THE CAME WILL BE OUT IN SEPTEMBER LIKE IN THAT SONG "I BE OUT TILL SEPTEMBA, I"LL BE OUT TILL SEPTEMBA" OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. HAHA half-life freaks!

To put it bluntly....**** off then. :)

Jeez... please f*ck off with these kind of threads.

NO, you're not an expert on gamedesigning. That they were working on a map tells us NOTHING.

They're still playtesting Greg said, so playtesting brings up bugs but also flaws in the maps.

Must you question everything that Valve says? Please, stop over analyzing, it f*ckng retarded.

Wow, please tell me your being sarcastic because that could quite simply one of the stupidest things i've ever read on the internet. And i always read the Weekend Web on SomethingAwful.com

How do you expect the to change numbers of health packs, amounts of ammo etc. without editing the levels?

There is nothing unusual about editing levels in the polishing stage. In fact, can you imagine them polishing and changing the game in response to playtests without editing maps?

I can't, so I don't find it disturbing in the least.

I think "working on" is a very subjective term though.

Could be they were just tweaking something, changing something for balance, updating a texture etc. Only valve know for sure, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Valve have certainly been less than great with info and PR, but I can't imagine they would "lie" about the status of the game at this point. I mean thier goal is to make money, after all, so what would be the gain? It's only going to push fans away.

Plus, if they were "lying" why would they have let Merc see them working on that level when they knew he was coming back to tell what he heard and saw?

Just doesn't add up to lying...seems more likely to be them just fixing minor bugs/flaws and tweaking.

Besides they didn't flat out lie to us about the date, they said they were being too optimistic.

Personally I still wonder what Mr Lombardi was smoking; I think even the most rabid of fanboys will have to admit he screwed up big time.

Anyway, I'd like to think they're just on the polishing stage. Besides, who's to say you don't revist Kliener's lab? Maybe City 17 has reparation policies covered by most insurance companies- "Strider attack removes your wall? Vital scientific equipment confiscated by an opressive force? You've come to the right place!"

The release date is end of summer 2004 at the earliest. Which means there is still work to be done.

What would bother me is if Valve wasn't working on levels and when Merc visited Valve he saw the guys playing Snood on their computer.

I get the feeling you think they shouldn't be working on the game right now but still don't release it until months down the road. I think the people making Duke Nukem Forever is following your process.

Dude! one year ahead is not optimistic! it's on the edge of being stupid! a month or two I'll understand but year or possibly more?

I don't want to get on Valve all the time but something is not right here. They keep silent for 5 years then they tell us guess what half-life 2 is comming in september and after that it gets moved to march? april? summer? fall? and big ass silence again! .

Valve a piece of advice! Shut the hell up til you finish the game period! adn stop giving tours in your offices because it looks like you have nothing to do! and the game is still not finished! stop bullshiting and get to work!

I'd agree with this poster - things like ammo pick-ups and health packs are last minute tweaks that are always being chopped and changed right up until gold..its the process of balancing the game! Making sure its not too difficult and not too easy. You can only do this stuff by firing up your level editors.

This is not unusual at all...

If you're prone to be disturbed, lots of things are construed as disturbing. Personally, I'm glad they're packing stuff in and tweaking the levels even now. I certainly don't think it's too late for that sort of thing, especially if they don't anticipate going gold until August.

Please join me in saying 'OH NOES'

Valve are working on the game, it'll be out when it's out, get over it, it's a game, not the end of the world.

apparently.. for some, it is the end of the world.. as sad as that sounds.. :|

HL1 was delayed for 1 year and yet everyone now is still whining about HL2, oh boo hoo I say, if you can't accept that maybe Valve is working their hardest and that they aren't lying when they say they "HOPE" to get the game out soon then I can't see you believing anyone who says anything about any game. Valve says they hope to have it out by summer, that wasn't a promise, that wasn't them trying to piss you off, that was them giving their honest view of when they THINK the game will be out. Software design is not a business where you can alwasy give accurate dates, things change all the time, there are simply too many variables to make any promises, the best and most experienced software developers in the world can't make any real promises when it comes to making estimates of when they will be done.

Man.. some of you are insane. I am happy reason seems to have won out on this thread though.

iamaelephant.. do you know how games are made? Because I bet you don't have a freakin clue.

Give me evidence. And not some whining "They said a release date and it was wrong".

Haven't we bitched enough on iamelephant? this is turning into a flame war (one guy Vs. forum), I hope someone locks this...
