I have some Motts apple sauce (individually wrapped cups) and i really really want to eat them, but it has a "Best by Dec 17 07" printed on the cups.

So am I screwed? How long does food last beyond its best by date before its bad to eat?

I'd say don't bother. If it's past its date then it can only be rank, then again, I drink lager that's 2 years off and I've also eaten canned meat thats a few months past its date. D:

It's probably still good. Expiration dates are generally fairly generous. It's generally meat you have to worry about.

Its also been in the refrigerator since ive bought them, not kept in a pantry or something.

Should be fine, if it tastes and smells fine then eat it! :)

Well meat and milk. I threw out some out-of-date butter yesterday, but for some reason we had three packages of butter, and only one opened. But we've got stuff in our fridge that's been there since I moved in. Not to mention all that left-over liqour. When did these people ever have the opportunity to get liquor? Or when are they saving it for? They never go out or to parties and they never drink.

...I seem to have turned this into a rant about my flatmates. Sorry.

I would say definitely don't risk it. It's nearly two months over-date.
This actually makes me think of the kind of question my brother (who is at uni) would ask. He once asked if a frozen pizza (that obviously should be cooked in the oven) was microwaveable! Typical student!

:x:x:x BLEAH

Once I left in the fridge a bag of frozen fries and went home for the hollidays (2 weeks). When I came back they were a few days past the expiration date so I figured what the hell might still be good. Big mistake. When I was frying them they started to smell weird. Tried one, and it tasted like cardboard:x. Straight to the trash they went.

Just a month ago I drank Corona beer that was like 5 years or more past its expiration date, but it tasted great actually. And I'm not one for beer.

Im in college :)

I dont have anything to drink (besides florida's nasty tap water) and needed something liquidy. They smelled right and tasted like they should, so i think im safe enough. I did eat four of them though...

Also AJ, haha me and my roomate are the same way. We just recenly threw out a whole bunch of meat in our freezer thats been in there for two years, and some other frozen stuff that we have had since Thanksgiving.... and not the most recent once, but the one before that hahah.

I am really picky about expiration dates. I've never had upset stomachs from them but, knowing some people who's had bad stomachs from them keeps me watchin!

last night i went out to boston pizza, asked for a steak medium rare...it came back super rare like bleeding all over the place.

I've never eaten rare steak before, and it tasted really good and in my mind, i pretended to be like a lion or something devouring an impala LOL

i hope rare steaks aren;t bad for you...

Yeah but see these other two have been living here for eight years... Sooo... that could be worrying.

I had some toast with 2 year old refridgerated butter earlier, and it tasted fine.

What about expired vitamins and water? I have some Centrum vitamins marked to expire in Feb 2008. It doesn't say if it's the beginning or end of February. I don't even know how vitamins would expire.

What do I do????

I always have some sort of fear when it comes to eating spoiled food. So much that I would even think twice about throwing away something that over its due date.

Nope, actually they are good for you compered to the "well done" ones.

I'm sorry but that's bullshit. Rare meat is never better for you.

Not that I don't like bloody meat, because I do, but it's definitely worse for you than overcooked meat.

PS: Stagnant water is freaking revolting.

How so? The less meat is cooked, the more nutrients are retained in it. The longer you cook it the less are retained, and eventually you end up with a burned piece of cardboard.
I do agree that rare meat can be bad if you have a weak stomach.

Raw/rare meat contains a certain bacteria of which I can't remember the name. Generally non-harmful to their animal carrier, yet can be nasty for humans.

So my sister says anyway, she studies this shit at university. I could be completely wrong which would make me look a slight plonker, but I trust her. I think.

Not just one bacteria, many types of bacteria that can be bad for you. Things like ecoli, salmonella and more.

You probably mean the salmonella bacteria.

Yes well, even if the meat is contaminated (if they took the proper precautions it wouldn't be), the bacteria doesn't survive at a certain temperature. So the bottom line is rare might be less cooked but the bacteria would still die. Do you honestly think they would serve a medium-rare steak at a restaurant if you could get a salmonella poisoning from it.

No it's not salmonella. There is a bacteria on raw/rare meat that affects the brain. Impairs risk judgments and reaction times.

Some restaurants serve "blue" meat, which you can most definitely get salmonella poisoning from.

Ugh "bleu" meat is disgusting It's where they cook meat for like 20 seconds, flip it, cook it for 20 seconds and then serve it to you.

why would they do that?...isn't that a bit risky?

So basically its just literally raw meat thats slightly heated up?

Sounds deliciously revolting.

I'm not sure if this would go better here, or in the thread about the worms. But anyways, all this talk of eating raw meat reminds me of this story. A couple of my friends think it's a disgusting story. I just thought it was hilarious.

You will die.

I know you never really liked me Krynn, but I will miss you when you die from that applesauce.

What're you talking about? We've been cool ever since you got your new avatar!

And at least i'll be one of the few (if not the only) to die of applesauce. Pfft, old age, bullets and disease are for lame ass conformists. Applesauce is a new and refreshing death.
