A simple question. Can I launch a Half-Life 1 mod on Half-Life 2? Without Half-Life 1 or Half-Life: Source, that is.

P.S. If this has already been posted, flame away.

I doubt it, different engine right?
I've had this question aswell, I've got HL: Source, and if it's possible, woohoo!

No and no. But u can dl HL1 for free/legally through steam if you type in hold this game up to date in the steam menu (aasuming u have HL2.

How d'you do that then?:x

Sorry to flame but you mustn't know much about games, or at least mods if you thought you could install mods from 1 game onto and entirely different one.

Actually I know a lot about games, I play a lot of games. You may want to rephrase your statement to that I don't know much about Steam. Maybe you can't put the mod from 1 game to completely another one, but that another one seems to share info and news on the mods. This is why I wondered.

And to the person who said to download HL1 free -- You can only download Half-Life : Source, if I am not mistaken. And not for free.

I don't think HL1 mods work on HL:S.

Well yeah. Obviously. If not on HL2, then not on HL: S. After all, Half-Life : Source is ported from the previous engine to the new one, Source.

But regardless of Steam, they are entirely different games with entirely different engines. That's like asking if you can play Doom 2 mods using Doom 3. Steam is just a common launcher for the two

What confused me is that Steam for Half-Life 2 shares info on the HL1 mods.

Steam is just Valve's content distribution system - it is not Half Life 2's :)

You cant get HL for free anywhere on steam, but you can only get HLS in the HL2 Deluxe or higher package and you can only get the regular HL in a little pack with some of its mods for $14.99.

HL2 versions of a number of previously HL1 mods are of course in the works, so in that sense there are Half-Life 1 mods for Half-Life 2 :)

Well one of my friends who didnt have HL1 said he just set it to keep the game up to date and it started downloading it.

Also theres a difference between knowing about games by just playing them and knowing about the technical stuff behind them like how different games are made on different engines etc.
