It's kind of a defence mechanism.

He has a flimsy belief that he is now a respected member of this forum - a belief with very little backing. So in order to try and justify his own importance he begins to post in the newbie forum, welcoming people as if he is a 'senior' member. This both serves to strengthen his own forum-psyche and to impress in new members that he is 'senior' - for if they don't know who's who, they'll likely look up to him, reasoning that if he's here welcoming people then he's been here for a while. Through this process he reenforces his own sense of self-worth which, in turn, makes him believe he has more right to welcome people, which reenforces his own sense of self and so on and so on in a self-perpetuating cycle.

EDIT: You yourself do this too, except you take it up a level. By lambasting those like Azner who post in this forum to solidify their sense of being an accepted member of a community, by pouring scorn on them and generally presenting a contemptuous demeanour, you elevate yourself to a level above them. You have progressed to the next stage, believing yourself very far above the ego-boosters because you scowl so heavily on them. And yet you are doing something very similar to them. We can also see this behaviour in young members who decry spam and off-topic digression, believing that it validifies them as a community member (a good example is pre-awesome Borgasm, who would get so angry it was cute).

And I? I post in this forum exempt from any of this simplistic psychological stereotyping because I am better than you.
