I've been near there - the Essex/Cambridgeshire border near Saffron Walden, Finchingfield etc. Makes for some amazing riding - miles upon miles of country lanes so rural that they're still signposted with those ye olde little white signs, so untravelled that you might see half a dozen cars in an hour. Lots of tight bends and hairpins and chicanes and stuff - and the little towns that dot the area are great places to stop at.
Saffron Walden has a real ye olde worlde feel to it - it's almost like walking through a real life version of Oblivion. You been there?

It would be wrong to judge the salary based on a simple conversion. $1000 per month is just 500pounds a month in GPD, but it's not that bad becuase in the US a can of coke is like 60cents just as it is 60p here.

I used to live off of 1k bucks a month. But had 3 roomates at the time. Now I live off 1500 a month, and it's nice.

Try using the roads. Try using public transport when you aren't fit and able-bodied.
The tube is shit - it's the most expensive public transport system in the entire world, and it has failures on a daily basis. It's packed to capacity during peak time and it doesn't run 24 hours a day. It's also only any good for going from the suburbs to the city.



It is run down, horribly so. The only parts of East London that aren't run down are Canary Wharf and Wanstead. North-west London is grimy and depressing just the same - Wembley, Kilburn, Dollis Hill, Neasden, Willesden...to name but a few areas.
And how on earth can London NOT be run down, when 40% of its inhabitants live below the poverty line, and the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Islington and Newham are amongst the top 10 areas in the entire country for the worst quality of life?
The "some cities" you refer to are no doubt other global cities with similar problems to London - compare London with a city like Exeter, Bath or Oxford and you'll see a very different story.

yea, my last internship I walked out with ~$460 a week, after taxes. I'm calling them in about a week to see if I can intern with them again. :E

I'm not fit and able bodied at the moment either, and as a result I'm completely incapable of getting around. I'm not sure what your definition of able bodied is, but commuting by public transport is out of the question if you don't have two good legs. Commuting by car is all but impossible under any circumstances. If I want to earn any money in the next six months I'm going to have to ride a motorcycle with a broken leg, which clearly is far from an ideal situation. I wouldn't have that problem anywhere else in the country.

You like the place, I get it. That doesn't mean that London is "beautiful", and it doesn't mean that it doesn't suffer from an extensive array of serious social problems. The majority of London IS grimy and run down, it IS a very divided city, where separate communities live in their own little groups, ghettoise their high streets and don't socialise with each other, and where the rich few live in multi-million pound houses two streets away from godforsaken council estates that look like something out of City 17 (take a walk around the borough of Camden). The vast majority of Londoners are poor and struggle to make ends meet, the average age that a Londoner leaves home is 29. It IS chronically overpopulated to the point that the transport infrastructure just cannot cope with the level of traffic which will only increase further. These are just the facts.
That you personally enjoy the city - and yes, there are many great things about London - does not change this reality.

I will probably apply for something similar next year, if available, because it's the easiest option to start graduate studies..

I would actually have been doing two jobs with that wage, plus a certain amount of graduate courses, plus writing my licenciate thesis...

I live on 426? a month here, but my rent is only 240?. I think 1000 dollar's about 680? so it would actually be an upgrade, but of course the rent would be higher and stuff...

but hey, if anyone is interested in sharing an apartment in Oregon area in 2 year's time, contact me
