lets implement a karma system. its easy, each memeber is allowed to give or take away one point from eacho other member (plus or minus one per post) now lets say some newb comes in here and make 15 spam threads, all the mods are asleep. 10 members rate each one negative 1 point, this gives the user -150 points and lets say at -100 points you are only allowed to post one message every 10 minutes or something like this. its a way to let us all control spam, spoilers, and general asshole people. lets say some guy just makes fun of people the whole time, he will lose karma and with it certain rights as a forum member. now lets also say that someone says some nice things, or a headcrab comes in and posts something interesting and worthwhile, his karma will increase and you guys can think of positive enforcement for that (maybe mod status at 1000 karma?) i think it would kelp out the mods by limiting the amount of spam they will come home to on these boards, and generally increase the quality of posts.

feel free to post any and all improvements or ideas for negative or positive reinforcement

Great idea about the karma system, works perfect in all sites I've seen it on.

to the guy who voted no, please tell me any drawbacks so that i may improve upon the idea? this idea is here to reward good users, allow regular users to remain where they are, and punish the bad guys.

please, no karma system. We're all equal. We'll only get fights with people that feel superior because they have more karma and people that have little karma but think it's unfair and blah blah

Although it's a good idea, there's one major drawback, ever heard of the one-star bandits or ninjas? basically you'll have a big group of idiots who'll just troll from thread to thread giving negative karma to everyone.

how about we make it so you cannot see a users karma? hell lets take out post counts too. i just want this so that if some my.g0t guy comes on here again we will be able to silence him within minutes, his karma will get so low that he could only post once every half hour or something like that, im sure he wouldnt go through the trouble of registering another account name 2 or 3 times, and all the mods have to do is come in and clean up after him. (and we users will be able to control most of the crap he spews out)

how about the mods decide who is allowed to issue or revoke karma points? people that are known in the forum like qckbeam, comradebadger, etc etc? this way its like having many smaller mods online at once? or maybe you cannot issue karma until you are registered for 30 days? it would take a lot of planning for them all to register, wait 30 days, and then kill us all in karma like that, and i think they wouldnt go through the hassel. **** make it a 6 month waiting period even.

No. It's unnecessary. If someone is intent on posting spoilers or whatever he'll just re-register, like those lamers did (afaik) in the larger spoiler attacks this forum has known.

Besides, it will only promote karma whoring and the like, where people would go out of their way to make posts other people will like which will get them karma points. People who state something that doesn't fit the forum consensus get rated down.

So it won't affect the intended target (trolls), and there are several problems with the system of which I mentioned one.

About only allowing a certain usergroup to issue karma: why not simply add mods? It's the same deal in the end.

No.

Elitism is not win. Not win

:)

And you don't ask, we ask you.

my karma system is not for ego or elitism, no one would know anyone else karma, i came up with the idea to keep out the my gots and spammers.

Freedom of speech!

I dont care if you like it or not... you have to live with it :)

Its been suggested before, even among staff and agreed each time it would end up leading to trouble. Granted it might work on other forums, but thats other forums not this one.

Would be a bad idea, even more so than post counts, ranks, and voting for threads.

Infact everyone should have the same name, post the same thing, have the same number of posts and be completely indistinguishable from each other

;)

Sounds like a plan.

u forgot "everyone should wear the same underwear too!"
there, i think that covers everything ;)

But.. Couldn't this lead to people abusing it?

I suppose I support it, but I find the ignore feature much more effective at stopping seeing posts from people begging to be banned.

Hmm, it's an interesting concept - but no.
