I think this theory makes the most sense. We don't really know what the Advisors originally looked like; given their apparent prowess in surgical modification and (probably) genetic fiddling, once they developed whatever technological augmentations they use, they most likely decided just to ditch the whole "body structure" thing in favor of increased brain mass.
In a way, it's a bit like the change in American civilization over the last century or so: as labor-saving devices (cars, electronic appliances, etc.) have gotten more and more prevalent, attributes like strength, fitness, and so on have become less and less important in everyday life. Hence the obesity "epidemic," perhaps more accurately considered as the atrophying of now-unneeded physical abilities. The Combine probably went through basically the same thing, except that they did it for a lot longer and ended up having no need whatsoever for bodies more complicated than a brain and perhaps a few organs to keep the brain running.

They're NOT slugs. We call them slugs because they're slug like pyhsically.. Think of them as huge brains. They didn't use their bodies beacuse they had technology to do that, and start to lose their bodies (Darwin's evolution theory, you lose what you don't use) but develop super-brains.

Appearently Eber, you will have a great body if you can live a million years.

Calling Advisors "The Combine" would be like calling Controllers "The Xen", or calling George Washington "The United States". Actually guys, they're slugs. Seriously, they're all fat and bloated now, and they've wrapped in those silly burlap sack-like clothes with the mechanical arms attached, but underneath they look like slugs, and even before they got all fat they still looked like slugs.

RtB, page 107. The alien Combine soldier, which looks to be a very similar--if not the same--race as the advisors, shows the same featureless head, breather mask, and a long, worm-like body. They also have two thin arms for grasping weapons (one of them is holding an electric whip). So they've always looked like worms, but now they're just feeble and glutonous.

For a minute I thought that was a picture of Kroenen, from Hellboy.

Which, admittedly, would be pretty cool. We need prowler-like Combine with sharpened tonfas and superhuman acrobatic agility.

Laidlaws word is truth. RTB, guide, his own mouth say these things. They are true "combine" (although I hate calling them that, we have no other name for them). We will learn more about them in Episode Two, perhaps more about whether they are really the bosses, or they are but servents to something more terrible.
Finally, there are three things I believe that could have caused that shockwave.
1) Vortigaunts; unlikely but pluasible.
2) A group of Advisors? Once again not likely but we don't really know much about htem. maybe they're courtoumoniuos like the Vortigaunts?
3) Some kind of after-energy or stray detonion from the Citadel?
 
He's meaning that there is in fact an original race of Combine within the massive forced-coalition of creatures that forms the "Combine".
 
I still think that shockwave is some kind of ‘placeholder.’ For some reason I don’t think we will see it in the actual game like that.

And yes, the Advisor slugs are the true form of Combine. But I don’t think they are the only true form of the Combine. The Combine were originally a race similar to humans. But they began to depend too heavily on their technology. Eventually they evolved to these fat slugs.

But I don’t think every ‘Combine’ had the same job in their Combine society and I don’t think they all used the same technology to make that job easier. Therefore I don’t think they all evolved the same way. But they probably all look pretty similar to the Advisors tho :P
 
Just sorta off-topic a bit, but I reckon that the human race will degenerate into blobs of some sort (after millions of years) just because our technology is increasing at an alarming rate, and we rely too much on it.
 
Breen was talking to them, how does breen understand them & how do they understand him? Does Breen speak "the fat slug combine" languauge?

The Advisor can understand Breen, and it responds by speaking to Breen mentally.
 
Telapathy obviously, they never talk and they demonstrate their phycic powers in EP1 by sexualy abusing your brain.

nobody WANTS to follow the combine, they're brainwashed. we know for sure that humans memories are erased before becoming CPs. and they're figureheads because they would be a distraction assasination target.

2. The Combine advisor is the only one who can communicate with mental telepathy, i've yet not seen anyone else within the combine so far who can communicate mentally as the Combine advisor talking to dr.Breen does i.e
Which brings my next theory up, the Combine advisors are surely the ones who were the "leaders" of the Combine forces in earth, communicating and giving orders to Breen as well as other combine forces throughout the citadel and earth with mental-communication.

The other races i've seen controlled by the combine (or who were controlled) didn't have as much stuff on their bodies as the Combine advisors, Alien slaves got shackles, Nihilanth had shackles, the Combine troopers got armors similar to the ones the military got, the stalkers got metal stuff in their bodies including stuff added and removed here and there throughout their bodies. But the Combine Advisors in the other hand got absolutely nothing left of their former selves, they're all covered up and i mean "ALL" covered up by technological devices and cables, even a camera that makes them possible to see.

The Combine who said that Breen needed a host body to survive in the universe/planet beyond the portal gives more proof that the Combine advisors are the original Combine, who learned to live in the environment that consumed their original selves, forcing them to carry all these stuff (Yet again, remember that Aslaves, Agrunts & Acontrollers inculding the trans-human soldiers in HL2 do not have as much technological devices on their bodies as the Advisors)

My my my you've got it all wrong(except for a part '4' and '2' but you have a wrong understanding). The word combine, is the Slugs and the soldiers you see are the overwatch. Nihilant was never under the control of the combine. The combine is a race, their community is the Universal Union.

i know, but i prefer calling them Combine instead of Slugs (dun ask me why..), and Nihilanth was under control of the Combine but broke himself free, his body are filled with metal devices and shackles, and his body look similar to the Stalkers in the Citadel, with parts removed and so on, which proves that he "was" under their control. He most likely stole some of their technology as well since the Citadel you enter in Xen, made by Nihilanth look very similar to the one in C17, except that this one is more organic than metallic

The Combine weren't on Xen.

how does a species, in the same instance, (de)evolve because of the same exact technology the helps them survive, precluding any "selection" from taking place?

technology and medicine go against any kind of evolution, both maladaptive and adaptive.
 
Ask Valve, because that's Valve information. And really, isn't it all about the irony? The Combine now live forever, but it has come at a cost.
