If I extract alyx's skin and name the model X. Then edit the skins and change the bit that says alyx to x will the X model have the origanal skin, my new skin or a checkboard?
I know how to reskin a existing model, I want to know how to make a new model identical to the old one and have a different skin on it so that eg I can have 2 different looking CPs
From looking at some of the models in the GCF's..I think it's a case of having the QC file for the model point towards 2 textures, which it should let you choose between in Hammer. I don't know how to explain it any better...look in the GCF's yourself, I think the first pipe in the prop_pipes folder uses it.
If you're wanting another model completely seperate that's a completely different matter...
i didn't realy understand that so I'll ask (from my unexperienced point of view) what I think I want to do. What do I use to edit models and what tool in it lets me select the skin for it?
It's not as simple as that...if you want a model to have a different skin you'll need to decompile it and completely reskin it, then recompile it. If you want it to have a choice of 2 skins you'll have to do all that but tell the qc file for the model it has 2 skin choices.
You can use any 3d modelling app to edit the models, but like I say it's not that simple
I know how to make a model have a new skin, I've already made a crappy Alyx skin.
I don't want it like an antlion where it has 3 ramdom skins. It's actualy to do with Garry's Mod. My plan is to copy a model, rename it, change and rename skins, edit model to use new skin (that's the bit I don't know how to do, I can do everything else), put in apropriate folders and add to spawn menu.
I'm trying to make forum member skins, lol.
