Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on this.

I personally think that smoking should be banned in public in England. As an ex-smoker (I smoked for ten years) it's amazing in hindsight how selfish I was as a smoker not even realising it. It's only when you don't smoke and there are smokers around you when you realise just how disgusing it actually is. A perfect example of this is when I go to a pub with friends. When I leave the pub I always end up coming out reaking of cigarettes (and subsequently change my clothes because of it).

When you go to a pub you know that there will be smoking. It just seems a bit ridiculous to prohibit it there. Non-smoking pubs are coming up but i can't imagine them being a success.

I have smoked as well and can relate to the clothes reaking, but I've had lots of experience with non-smoking social get togethers and they always ended up at the doorstep, much nicer to join the smokers halfway outside....

But for public places such as sports cantines I think this is a good thing. I hate it when I go to the gym and on my way to the showers I have to walk through the smoke infested bar. What's the point of sport if you're ****ing up your lungues afterwards anyway?
 
People know the health risks of smoking. If they still want to poison themselves, I'm not going to stop them.
 
Partial ban.

No cigs on the dancefloor, that just pisses me off, got some nasty fag burns :| D:
 
Although I don't live in the UK, I support the full ban, unless smokers will go and smoke in airlock equiped chambers.

So you're saying the none-smokers shouldn't go to pubs if they don't like the smoking? How selfish of you! The fact is pubs are a place to meet, relax and have a chat with your friends, it seems a bit absurd to me that smokers should be allowed to ruin that for none-smokers. Smoking is on its way out and smokers should just accept it.
 
total ban - has worked in ireland and its nice to be able to see - strange at first, you're not sure whats missing!!!

Aye but this is a Ban on smoking in public places not an outright ban on tobacco. The main issue being Second-Hand smoke being inflicted on the rest of us.

Full Ban I say!
 
Total ban hopefully, disgusting murderous smokers should be ridiculed and forced into hiding for their hideous and suicidal acts.
 
If by total ban you mean cannot smoke in any public places, it's already like that where I live (Atlantic Canada).

to me a pub/bar is weird without the usual vices such as booze and cigarettes. If you want to relax and have a chat with your friends go to the upcoming non-smoking establishments. But I predict they won't be a success.

The reason that bars and clubs are the main target is because they are the more sociable gathering places, and they attract the most people.

It's fine for smokers to sit amongst smokers, but it's a bit unfair for people who don't smoke to endure second hand smoke when ll they came out for was a drink and some banter.

Looking at people smoke gives me faith in humanity, because you know the ****s will probably be dead in a few years.

However, I would much rather have a complete TOTAL ban. As in, no Cigs sold, or used, anywhere. But hey, thats me.

I went out for a few drinks on Saturday night with a plaster cast for a broken wrist, and woke up on Sunday with an arm that stank of cigarette smoke - not again!
 
I say "no change", people should be able to smoke on their own property. If you don't like it, leave. (no, I'm not a smoker) I ****ing hate it when the government plays nanny.

I'm glad we have rights in the U.S.A.
 
We've had public smoking banned for a while here in Canada and it's great to be able to go out and have fun and not come back reaking of cigarettes.

There is a difference between public smoking and smoking in private areas. I'm against bans only on the latter. It should be up to the owner to allow smoking or not.
 
Yes, the right to dump nasty crap in the environment that other people have to deal with is a very important one.

Are we going to ban cars now too? What about burning wood, should that be banned? lol that causes a lot more pollution.

I think people should be allowed to smoke in their own homes, so long as they don't have kids. And that's it.

Those examples serve a purpose. They get things done. Cars transport people. Burning wood gives warmth and/or energy. Cigarettes are useless... unless you're addicted to them. They burden non-smokers with the nasty smell; the smoke can cause itching and redness in the eyes and throats of non-smokers; they cause many health problems/diseases in the smokers and potentially the non-smokers if they are exposed to it enough; they put an unnecessary strain on our medical system. What purpose do they serve? You wouldn't want someone carrying around a gas-powered generator, spewing toxic fumes in a bar... would you? That is equally useless and disgusting.

If that bar owner allows it, then such actions should be acceptable. I'm sorry to hear that you can't deal with freedom. Not every action needs a purpose for it to be legal.

edit:

And maybe you should advocate changing the medical system instead of just further limiting people's rights on their own property.

That's public property (everyone has a say). Unless the town gives you permission that should be illegal.
 
The ban comes into effect Summer '07, so that gives me a year and a half of solid Cigar smoking. And I'm going to blow it in your face to spite you all.

And it just makes sense in a country where you have public health care. It becomes the government's best interest to keep you healthy because those black lunged smokers and their second hand smoke cost lots of money to keep alive.

Same goes to general health. That's why I think it's ridiculous to pour money into health care but then cut phys ed programs out of school curriculums. Look what the Australians did with their athletics programs. Also doing well at the Olympics is a nice bonus to having an active competative population.
 
But theres kiddies who smoke the equivalent of 5 ciggerettes a day, becuase of secound hand smoking at home.
I say we decimate the parents, that'll show em.
