The Horrors - Scarlet Fields

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eRX4QHZLfo

Don't let their look fool you, these guys make some seriously beautiful and awesome music. For example, the above song, which has been on repeat for the past two days. If you dig My Bloody Valentine, you might like this.

Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness. My favourite Manics track after If You Tolerate This.

Paramore - Brand New Eyes

Been really getting into this band lately.

I prefer Riot's faster paces, but Brand New Eyes is still pretty damn good.

Yeah Paramore are probably a bit mainstream, but Haley Williams has one of the best voices around this generation. She is seriously gifted.

All I Wanted, Brick By Boring Brick (favourite) and Looking Up all stand out for me on the album.

Mainstream rock, maybe a bit punkish. Bit girly too. Think...Twilight. Decode is a bonus song from the film, which is catchy.

Recommended.

Sigur Ros - Untitled 1 because I feel really down and was hoping this would make me cry. So far, no such luck.

Stuff I've been listening at recently that's gotten me through stuff (in alphabetical order since I'm picking it out of my winamp library) -

Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect
This, to me, is almost prog metal (or what it's come to be) in it's purest form. I can't say I know the band well, this being the first I've heard of them since a friend linked me to Mordecai a few years back, but I prefer this to what else I've heard of them. It mimics Opeth's Watershed in some ways, in that it's a more well-produced and 'solid' album that punctuates long, heavy, technical songs with softer parts, including some full rock ballads. I think these are what set the albums apart (and others like them), as they provide a crucial breather between the extended metal pieces, making them far more accessible and, I feel, enjoyable.

Coheed & Cambria - Good Apollo yada yada yada Part 1
I've had this album forever but never gave it a good listen beyond Welcome Home and a couple others. It's... well, catchy. I don't know if you could say I have a great deal of respect for them as musicians, but I appreciate the way they've blended prog sensibilities with an almost pop/rock sound. Sure there are heavier/more complex parts, but the way the songs are written for the most part: the hooks, the recurring choruses, all point to a simpler mode of composition. Not that there's anything wrong with that, in fact compared to some other things I've been listening to it's kind of a welcome return to the norm.

Cynic - Focus
This album is everything I've come to hope and expect of progressive music since I became infatuated with it. I can't sufficiently put into words how I feel about it, so I'll just post my favourite song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSmAacEpt-Y

Love it, just wish these guys had more material. It's been fifteen years, one long breakup, and a whole buttload of misfortune besides between this and their last album, and at that they're just over half an hour a piece. :(

Gavin Harrison & 05ric - Drop
Side-project between the drummer from Porcupine Tree and some guy from Myspace. Interesting stuff, mainly focuses on "05ric's" extended-range bass playing and strange, hypnotic vocals, but there's some awesome and suitably technical drumming in there too. Reminiscent of a much more minimalist King Crimson (if only because they're the only other band I can think of who employ this kind of instrument).

Karnivool - Sound Awake
Aussie band introduced to me by a friend who just moved there. I'm really growing to love bands like this who, like Porcupine Tree before them, have taken a straighter pop/rock sound (in this case nu metal :V) and put a more progressive or experimental slant on it. Even if it just means the songs are a few minutes longer, it gives them more room to breathe, more room for instrumentation, and time to evolve. Great example of which, and my fav. by them (sorry, tangent) - Porcupine Tree's Anesthetize. It changes so much throughout it sounds like 2 or 3 separate tracks, while retaining a sense of continuity. Same can almost be said for this track, though it has a bit more of a post-rock feel to it (yes, the lead singer is intense and quite possibly on acid :p) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO4B5hToaBQ

Mars Volta - Octahedron
Quite honestly, the first album I can actually say I've enjoyed from these guys since Deloused. I love that they're trying out a simpler style, although it might not be their niche, but I really couldn't handle the frenetic degree they took their experimental side to in the last few releases. Highlights: Teflon - oh man I can't get enough of that off-kilter drumbeat, catchy lyrics too (for once). Copernicus - totally sublime. The electronic beat in the latter part is a nice surprise... kind of painful with headphones on, mind you.

Maudlin of the Well - Bath/Leaving Your Body Map
Wow yeah I think I'm gonna have to listen to these some more. Don't quite 'get' them just yet. :|

The Ocean - Precambrian
Actually got this one a while ago, but I've been listening to it somewhat regularly since then, and it still amazes me how comprehensive the album is. The first disc is brutal as hell, actually took me a while to get into since I don't normally listen to stuff like it. The second disc, however, is pure sex. It bridges more styles than perhaps anything else I've heard, often returning to the death metal/hardcore sound heard on the first disc, but always drifting into something softer or less frantic. There's even some post-metal/sludge-sounding stuff that almost sounds like an homage to Isis. Great track to demonstrate (yes, that is Kevin Spacey) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI5eLC6GSBc

Porcupine Tree - The Incident
No great surprises here, but a very solid release. Sounds a bit like Blank Planet and Deadwing had a baby.

Russian Circles - Geneva
I love this band for one reason: they've shown that post-rock/metal drumming doesn't always have to be plodding and subdued, that there's room for busier and more technical beats. The drums almost dominate their sound at times, which is just fine by me, although others may find it distracting. That aside, the album is pretty great, but I can't help being reminded of their debut, Enter (which I loved), in multiple parts. It almost sounds like they're trying to replicate specific passages, which at 3 albums strong is perhaps a little too soon for the band to start referencing themselves (unlike say Dream Theater, who earned it, then ran with it like a kid with scissors and too much sugar). Which reminds me I still need to check out their 2nd album, which I skipped for some reason...

LOL, wall o' text. Congrats to whichever weary word-worn traveler has actually read this far, I hope you've learned something (for instance, the location of the ignore feature so you don't have to waste your precious time scrolling past my long-winded ramblings in future~).

Maudlin of the Well - Bath/Leaving Your Body Map
Wow yeah I think I'm gonna have to listen to these some more. Don't quite 'get' them just yet. :|

you might like kayo dot who are associated with these. i prefer KD, did quite enjoy maudlin's part the second album though.

Oh holy jesus what is with this forums and youtube embedding. Yesterday it wasn't even working and now it's embedding a youtube link I had INSIDE A HYPERLINK. AAAaaaaghahgahgahghavb anoujanoprr1 ea3t5 2ye

I just got into ELO and damn they are pretty ****ing good, this is my favorite song (I haven't heard them all yet though). I wish I heard them sooner, but I kind of like that there are hidden gems of music even with bands from the 70/80's.

Beach House - Teen Dream (new album streamable in its entirety from NPR a week before release, although that really doesn't mean anything anymore as it's probably leaked already)

I admit the first time I heard Beach House I couldn't tell if it was a lady or dude singing. It's a lady. She's got an interesting voice. Only about halfway through right now, but it's similar to all their other stuff.... mellow mellow mellow. There's been a couple of good songs, but currently liking this less than some of their old songs. Haven't heard any particularly beautiful guitar melodies like they used to have. Maybe it'll grow on me.

[edit] Heard more and definitely don't like this as much. The description on the NPR site sums it up pretty well -- "Scally and Legrand have weaned themselves off the lonely minimalism of their previous records — 2006's self-titled debut and 2008's Devotion — for a more expansive sound. Where those records often felt murky, Teen Dream feels like a shift from fuzzy sepia tones to Technicolor." The fuzzy lonely minimalist sepia tone was what made them so great in the first place :(. It was like they had fallen out from some other time to croon you away to a better place. But now they've replaced organ sounds with normal keyboards, and on some songs I have no idea where the guitar is, which is like half of the duo. They even took one of their older songs "Used to Be" which used to be (no pun intended) a really sad song about regret and second chances and not knowing how things will/would have worked out... and turned it into something else. Only new songs I really like on first listen are Walk In The Park and Take Care.

[edit2] Listened to the whole thing a couple more times through, and decided I was a little too hard on it the first time. It's definitely different (I am seriously missing those sweet guitar tunes), but overall it's pretty good. Zebra is a great song too.

Some kids from Texas A&M played a percussion version of Explosions in the Sky's Birth and Death of the Day. Even though I graduated from their rival university, I have to say this is pretty impressive. They've got a few screw-ups but overall it's an interesting version.

Also found out that the last Explosions album went to #76 of the Billboard charts. That's just insane.

Hiromi - Brain
Trying to get into some jazz, since exploring dad's vinyl collection to refresh my memory for the album covers thread rekindled my interest in it. I've always been exposed to jazz/fusion through him, and always sort of respected it as a form even when I was too young to appreciate it, but never really took it upon myself to get any.

Anyway, this seems to be a good place to start. Someone linked a video of hers ages back which I really loved (posted below), so I've started checking out some of her other stuff. Very 'safe' for me, since she incorporates elements of other genres I'm already into - namely progressive rock, mostly owing to the highly technical nature of her playing, and her band's (****ing awesome drummer, naturally). I actually feel like she can be a bit much at times, especially with her weird synth parts, but that's quite obviously just part of the huge energy with which she performs, so no helping that I guess.

Santana - Soul Sacrifice (live at Woodstock)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JryQXilMj4

Hadn't listened to Santana in ages. I am not really keen on most stuff he did after the 70s to be honest, but his earlier work is amazing. The slow stuff like Samba Pa Ti is nice, but I prefer Carlos really going at it like a Latino version of Jimi Hendrix. This performance is somewhat druggy but awesome nonetheless.

Unkle - Chemical (featuring Josh Homme)

I had no idea this existed until I listened to End Titles... Stories For Film. Basically Chemistry from the album War Stories, but with vocals by the voice behind QotSA and Eagles of Death Metal. Sounds so much more awesome with his voice.

Music: Rate and Discuss.

I don't care about the rate part, but the new rule of this thread is no posts like yours.

What the hell is wrong with my post? Is it the fact that i didn't "discuss" it? I f*cking retarded that you have "discuss" what you're listening to in order to post it. Who the f*ck came up with that ridiculous rule?

DarK Dark Dark - Bright Bright Bright ep - 9.5/10
Listen here: https://brightbrightbright.com/

Excellent. Occasionally when I'm bored (which is often) I'll randomly check bands' websites just to see what's going on. In this case, they have a new ep and are touring. I like pretty much all the songs on this. I took off half a point because hey nothing's perfect :) (and there's a couple parts that I'm not a huge fan of, like the last half of Flood, but just minor quibbles). I've been listening to some other versions of these off a couple of Daytrotter sessions they recorded, but the new versions are much fuller since they've got more people playing. I think Wild Goose Chase is my favorite at the moment (although it was written by another dude so it's a cover). There are some very nice subtle touches to it. I'm also liking Something for Myself.

Turns out they're playing a show in a very small coffeehouse on the north side of town in April. While it's really easy to get to by car, I don't have one. Might take a cab.

Hallowed be Thy Name - Iced Earth

This a great cover of a great song. Easily beats the covers Cradle of Filth and Machine Head did.

God I hate Cradle of Filth.

I gave in to the hype and decided that I like this band. Part of the attraction is that some of the lyrics are in Afrikaans. Which make them sound almost understandable for me since it is a variation on Dutch. But not quite. Think Simlish. Anyway, aside from the vocals the beats are really slick. Sophisticated rave (if that is even possible). Supposedly they will touring Europe later this year. This track especially should be awesome live.

The song that plays in Club Dark Star in ME2. Really loving the Mass Effect club music, it has such a melo/chill vibe while still being very upbeat and non-chillout trance.

Song is called Happiness by John Morgan, as video title says.

Also a download link in the video description.

Mass Effect 2 has a fantastic soundtrack. Whenever I was in the Afterlife club, I kept thinking "man, I'd listen to this outside of the game."

I've been listening to the solo work of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (writer/guitarist of The Mars Volta), and it's damn good. Showed some to Sheepo and he liked it :3 This song is called "Old Money" off the album of the same name. It's pretty obviously a concept album about the Bilderberg group and the IMF and all that, but I don't know enough to string together a storyline. All I know is that the music is great.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - Un Buitre Amable Me Pico

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV8QTe3jWXs

This song is ****ing awesome. His last few solo albums have been really crappy (Despair, wtf), but Solar Gambling is a huge step up. The vocalist he's working with has such a beautiful voice.

In other news, it appears I have gone gay for Omar.

I really, really like these guys. "Ambient/experimental" kiwi outfit, pretty post-rockish but they have a really distinct sound.

Chillingest ****ing song ever:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20lRVTO-RjI

Cool song, I like it a lot. Empty spaces made it interesting. Made me realize how rarely people use rests in their music.

Something about it is reminding me of Slint's "Good Morning, Captain," which is not at all a bad thing.

Dude. Thank you. I loved this track and I love what I'm hearing while I'm browsing through their music on youtube.
