why would playing half life 2 after reformatting and installing all new drivers be choppy?

Im runing the game on all the low settings and in window mode and it still gets really choppy during action.

my specs are p4 2.0, 512ram, 9600 pro, 2,0 ghz processor

i installed older drivers but that ddint do crap. I also have service pack 2...

can someone please help me, this SUCKS

anyway, your 2.0ghz CPU and 512mb of ram don't go well together. a more powerful cpu might be needed.

Don't go well together? I've got the same specs as he does except mines a 2800+ (at 2.1ghz) and it runs like a dream.

Maybe you shouldn't put on SP2, maybe your page file isn't configured properly? What is your average FPS?

.... did you even read the first post?

I take it you've run though the usual? Spyware/Viruses... Defrag maybe? Direct X is installed properly ? Is Half Life 2 the only game that runs like this ?

I gave your computer teh AIDs.\

Ew, t3h floppy dicksdrive.

Anyway, perhaps you didn't configure the pagefile correctly.

But I think it's an issue with VALVe though. VALVe and ATI cards. Allot of people with ATI cards have been getting this.

but didn't ATI pay HL2 to make their cards run best with the game? Irony at its best!

You can't pay HL2, HL2 is a game. They paid the creator, Valve.

And the problem is not solely with the ATi cards, it's with a VIA chipset + ATi GFX card combo (KM400 + 9600 for example). Switching to a nVidia chipset can cure the "stutters" as well the "memory cannot be read" error. Cured my problems.

I'm gonna hijack this thread for just a second, but I have about the same specs he has...

P4 2.0 GHz, 512 RAM, and All-in-Wonder 9600 Series, SB Live, 350W PSU

I am upgrading to 1024 DDR RAM, SB Live 24 Bit, and nVidia 6800GT..

Can all these new upgrades run on 350W PSU? I've contacted Dell, and they said that the Power Supply wouldn't be compatible with the mobo, so upgrading a power supply isn't an option..

I'm trying to upgrade it so that Lost Coast will run decent, and HL2 will run w/o stutters or any problems..

If the problem persists, it is not Aids. If it gets worse, then you need to panick. I believe the Aids virus slowly corrupts your RAM or something

The source engine is crap at the loading content on the fly side of things. The moment it has to load a new sound... ST-T-T-TUTTER. Getting more speedy RAM/CPU will be the only thing that will help.

that reminds me of that south park episode where the dude is telling everyone that he lost weight because he has "aides", and then he wants to give aides to everyone, inlcuding children!!! and everyone else is shocked cu they think he's talking about AIDS

good episode!

You won't be able to run all that on a 350W power supply. You'll need a replacement power supply... Not quite sure what they meant about incompatible... You'll have an ATX power supply already and an ATX motherboard...

whats a pagefile
A pagefile is a file reserved on your hard drive so that when your computer has run out of physical memory, rather than overwriting the stuff that's in there, it copies it all into that file.

Generally the page file will be about 2 times the size of your RAM, so in your case it'd be 1024MB. So effectively you'll have 1536MB of RAM - however not quite; the HDD is a lot slower at reading and writing than the RAM is so it won't give you a massive performance boost.

To activate the page file do this:

Click on Start > Right click on the My Computer icon > Select Properties > Advanced > You need to click on Settings underneath the Performance heading > Advanced > Look down at the bottom what does it say the total paging file size is? > Now click on Change > Click on Custom Size set the minimum as 1024 and the maximum as 1280 > Click on Apply and close all windows down and restart your computer. Does it help?

thanks for the help, but it didnt help at all.....As of right now, i have on all the lowest setting, and i try playing revenholm, and its jsut ridiculous how slow and choppy it is running. I am positive is has nothing to do with my specs, granted they arent the top of the line, but I have palyed the game many times without trouble. So should I just reformat my computer? Theres doesnt seem to be any other option and im not gonna pay someone to come over here and tell me to upgrade my system....

Thanks

Here, he was wrong about the paging file.

K, go into the paging file options page (start>right click my computer> properties>advanced>performance>advanced>virtual memory).

Now click on the hdd that has the pagefile set on it, and select "No Paging File". Close the window and restart your computer.

Now when your pc boots back up, go back into your pagefile options page, and click on your secondary hdd, the one that doesn't have your games installed on it. If you only have one hdd, then click on that.

Now ideally, you want to run some high memory usage games and applications and check to see how much memory they use, then set the pagefile significantly higher than that.

Alternatively, set your pagefile to equal 2 gigs plus your ram. IE 1 gig of ram and 1 gig of pagefile equals 2 gigs total. 512 mb of ram plus 1534 mb of pagefile equals 2 gigs total.

So if you have 1 gig of ram, then set the pagefile to be 1024 minimum and 1024 maximum. If you have 512 mb of ram, then set it to be 1534 minimum and 1534 maximum.

Dell cases don't fit ATX PSUs or ATX Mobos, thier cases are proprietary. And their PSUs are not compatible with ATX Mobos, and visa versa, thier Mobos are compatible with ATX PSUs. Do like me, get a new ATX case w/ about a 400-450 watt PSU built into it, and get a new ATX Mobo.

that didint work either......this SUCKS...first person to help me wins money, seriously
