Watched it on live TV.

It's called Soongryemoon, or Namdaemoon (Southern Great Gate).

1897

1930 - Japanese occupation

1953 - Korean war. Gate was hit by 122mm artillery rounds, but survived.

2008 - Gate was most likely burned down by some bastard with gasoline.

This gate survived half a millenia's worth of barbarian invasions, riots, revolutions, even the Japanese invasion and occupation, as well as North Korea and China's artillery bombardment.

And one mother****ing bastard burns it down in 5 hours.

;(

It's just architecture. It can be rebuilt as Pesh said.

I'm not much one for priceless pieces of architecture, even if they are thousands of years old.

Stronger, better, and faster?

Damn straight! It'll be mobile.

A mobile oppression palace!

Yeah, I suppose. But I still feel sad, because my ancestors have protected this building with their lives, most notably during the occupation.

You made be feel bad by making me lol. :D

Then let the Chinese build it for one-third the cost.

And one-tenth of the integrity.

They should use a strike-anywhere match, on his nipples.
I LOLed

Yeah, that really sucks. I wonder if a N. Korean extremist was responsible? It doesn't look as bad on the screenshot as it probably does in person though. The foundation's still standing anyways. :|

It's a shame to see something that old, with that much history, to be destroyed by some little prick.

I dreamed I was a butterfly, flitting around in the sky; then I awoke. Now I wonder: Am I a man who dreamt of being a butterfly, or am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a man? -Zhuangzi

People who destroy priceless artifacts of days gone past need to be drawn, shot, hung, quartered, cooked and fed to own family.

You guys are too mean and too funny. :p

I thought I knew grief when Heath Ledger was taken from us.....but I shed tears now!. ;(

Nah I kid, tis a real shame though, Asian buildings do look nice, and allot more interesting and imposing then many European castle of boring stone.

That's quite distressing that someone would do something like that.

/me facepalms the world

Pffft, my National Treasure #1 is a small semi-aquatic mammal with large teeth

They caught the bastard.

Good thing too, he was planning to blow up a subway as well.

Confucius say: If you build it, they will come.

....in this case rebuild it.

...
..

*backs slowly out*

They caught the bastard.

I changed my idea, light the strike-anywhere match on his balls, and shove the burning match up his penis. Then systematically remove his body parts and feed them to him.

They caught the bastard.

the man is 70 years old and probably senile

oh and no offense but Korean government run emergency services seem Clouseau-esque for some reason ..I mean if they're not being beaten to a bloody pulp by bamboo wielding peasants they ..well ..

The structure collapsed as hundreds of firefighters attempted to put the blaze under control, officials said. The gate's large stone base remained intact.

epic fail

This thread is full of too much funny.

Think about it, if it was another bigger country there would be more anger about this.

That really sucks :|
Who is the guy who destroyed it?
