May 3, 2006 - Pandemic Studios today announced Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, the sequel to its smash-hit sandbox shooter from early last year, Mercenaries. For the sequel, Pandemic has reconstructed its "playground of destruction" from the ground up for "next-gen technology", though the developer is remaining tight-lipped about exactly what platforms the game will appear on. The only solid bit of info that Pandemic is sharing today is that the game will take place in a new locale.

"While the original Mercenaries' high-octane, go anywhere, do anything and blow the crap out of everything style was a hit with gamers, the whole experience was screaming to run on next-generation game systems," explains Pandemic CEO Andrew Goldman. "And while we're building on the core mercenary experience we created for the original, we've taken full advantage of next-gen technology to offer a more richly detailed, reactive, living world than gamers have ever seen before."

I loved the first one. Some better A.I. and less scripted more dynamic battles as you drive around the world would have been welcome though. It got kind of boring running into the exact same fight everytime you got to a certian road. And the guns themselves were frustratingly inaccurate. Hopefully this will be fixed the in sequel. Lookin forward to it.

I want to save everywhere I want goddammit, not having the ability to save everywhere really makes me not want to explore the world and take chances and try stupid thing, which is what this game is about.

Second, one of the thing that annoyed me in GTA was that if you had a good car and you drove it you would only see good cars, but if you lost your car all the cars that came near you were shitty cars. Now this game takes that one step further, if you loose your car and go back to the road most of the time no car pass by at all god dammit, You can walk like 10 minuts on a dammed road and just not see a car. It's like cars only spawn when you are near the HQ of one of the factions.

This game has a lot of potential but for the above mentioned reasons and some more it's more like a missed opportunity, it frustrates me as much as it makes me happy.

Well, basically it was announced a few months ago when LucasArts CEO announced that Mercenaries would become a new main franchise for'em, but yeah, it's nice to have more details..
I hope it's the same team as on the first, I got to talk to the lead dev on it, Cameron Brown I think his name was, he sent me a few copies of the Mercenaries demo for the PS2 before it was released in Europe, very nice guy.:)
Anyway, I emailed'em about a half year back with some suggestions for new features, such as a more dynamic war going on that actually changes "borders" etc if you follow what I mean..
Anyway, looking forward to this.:)
I'm also fairly certain Mercenaries 2 will be on multiple consoles I.E. PS3 and XB360, atleast according to the LucasArts CEO.:)

Great news. Loved the first one. Imagine what they could do if they use the UE3 engine, oh baby o__o.

UE3? Imagine what they could do with the CryEngine 2!O_O
OH GOD!:p
Edit:Wo! 100 posts away from 2000..:D

Wait can the cryengine stream. For that matter why can't source stream, streaming kicks ass.

Oh yes, this is big. Mercenaries never got the love it needed.

sweet, heard great things about Mercs, never got round to getting it :(

Shop glitch for the win :D

Great game indeed.
I am one of the few fans that actually enjoyed this game very much.
It doesn't have much of a storyline but the gameplay is pure fun and carnage.
Not to mention the superb soundtrack that keeps yer heart pounding.
It really didn't get the love it deserved.Hopefully this sequel will change that.

Great stuff..hopefully they use XBOX live to the fullest for this game.

When I spoke to Cameron last year he didn't express that much interest in MP, I'm not sure if he's the lead dev of this project tho but he was the lead dev of Mercenaries 1, anyway, I think they should keep expanding on the SP, instead of trying to expand on the MP.:p
I mean, Cameron and the others goals was just was the name of the game was, they wanted to make a Playground Of Destruction.:)
Anyway, I'm hoping they first focus 100% on the SP, and if they get time over, perhaps add co-op or something alike..

:(

The thing I was thinking about most when playing Mercs was how much fun it'd be to jump into a blackhawk with my friend, while he guns or gun in a humvee while he drives. It'd be like a 2vWorld BF2 that could be opened up if it was co-op. The game would be driven from solid to awesome.

Yeah, they should at least have some sort of simple co-op destruction frenzy like in GTA:SA.

I'm pretty sure they'll include co-op mate, there was a large demand for it back in the day, however, I want them to focus 100% on the SP first, then co-op, co-op has a higher priority for me than say TDM, because as you said, this game would be great in co-op, imagine stealing two big Russian HINDs and ripping through the countryside :p

I so wish someone would do a Mercenaries-ish FPS with a PPU on the PC xD
Now that'd be ****ing insane if done right!

Holy crap I am soooooooo happy to hear this I absolutly loved Merc 1 and on the next-gen systems this game is gonna kick ass!!! One of the most under-rated games EVER IMO!!

Ooh and now that I'm at it, I hate the fact that in some vehicles you have to get out and get in in another position to man the guns, I wish you could just press a button to get in the turret and back in the driver seat, but they probably done that to encourage you to get teammates in your vehicle, still I like that changed.

They should bring Merc 1 to the PC D:
