Pinned down by chopper where gate 5 in Canal closes

In the Canals where Gate 5 closes, I've made my way into what I think is the control room, where I picked up the Magnum. When you exit into the yard where many containers are, the chopper is overhead. I've shot at it with the SMG and Magnum to no avail. How do you shoot down the chopper?

There should be machineguns set up in somewhere around there. Those are for you to shoot down the chopper.

Yeah, you have to run for a little while first. Eventually you'll get to the machinegun tower and shoot it down.

you run around in the area with all the crates and whatnot, with the chopper after you, then you go into a warehouse, kill several combine, walk through some buildings and go to a tower which has mounted machineguns to shoot down the chopper.

When you're in the tower don't forget to use the switch to open the gate.
