Radeon is confusing

Ok, I checked the prices for ATI cards at CompUSA and here is what I found:

Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB = $219 ($199 w/ rebate)
Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB = $199
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB = $399

Why is 9600 cheaper then 9500? Did the people at CompUSA have one too many to drink last night? :cheers:

ur answer is that after ati released the 9500 (which had the 9700's architecture or whatever), they realized that it cost waaayy too much to make for the price they were selling it at and that they could have a mid-class videocard that could be produced cheaper (so they made an entirely new chipset with the 9600 and cut the rendering pipelines from 8 to 4) and thats the 9600 (plus it prevents people from trying to "make" their 9500s 9700s. hope this helped

9500s (the old version) are in short supply and high demand, mostly because they can easily be overclocked to beat the 9600. High demand plus limited supply = higher price.

they beat the 9600 cards even whilst at default clock speed... Basically the 9500 is a better card than the 9600

yeah. 9500 pro still has the 8 rende rpiplines, witch was one of the 9700 pro's best features, so if you can get a 9500 pro (which is like 150$ on pricewatch) you are set.

i would say basically yes - it will probably have a couple of features missing that the 9700 has, but if you oc the 9500 pro to 9700 pro standards, there would probably be very little in it

I've heard that you can turn your 9500 into a 9700 with a little overclocking util, some custom drivers and a dab of solder

I have yet to try it. I doubt I will unless the need for greatness rises September 30th
