Starting out on a guitar

I have a few questions and tips

Do you know how to play the classical guitar? If you do, everything should be fine, other than the fact that yo would have to get used to a shorter distances between the frets and strings. If you are a complete beginner, than I either suggest getting a teacher or a friend to sort of give you the basics, or you can scour the internet for a good guitar teaching website.

The first basic step towards playing would actually be your holding position, the next would probably plucking strings in the form of either just a pick or your four fingers, and making sure you are in sync. Then would be the learning of chords, which is very very important. Then you would have to learn how to strum and get used to strumming patterns. There are many things you can do after that, string kinking, double plucking, power chords etc.

You have to get the whole feel of the guitar playing. Also, I recommend starting off with easy songs. After getting aquaninted with a guitar, try playing some plucking songs such as Behind Blue Eyes by The Who or some strumming songs such Yesterdays by The Beatles or Knocking on Heaven's Door by PinkFloyd. Great songs to like get yourself started once you are familiar with a guitar

I've never played a guitar before. Is the guitar in the link any good for a beginner? Thanks for the advice

That looks like quite decent deal, you just need to remember that your first few guitars probably qon't be very good quality. Like Soulslicer said, start of with chords and familiarising yourself with your setup, get your strumming down pat, and work hard. You might experience some physical pain at first, but it will pass, and the joy of playing guitar will most certainly offset that.

That little combo will sort you out, I started off with a squire/amp combo when I first picked up the guitar. As has been mentioned, learn the basic major/minor chords, some simple pentatonic scales in a few different keys and you'll hit the ground running.

I'd get a cheaper one and buy the guitar and amp seperately. Then you can make sure the amp has overdrive/distortion. You can get a decent bedroom amp with overdrive for about ?25.

The only problem with cheaper ones is the action can be messed up, usually the strings are too high off the fretboard which makes it a little hard to play. If you can spend that kinda money in your link then you might aswell go to a proper guitar shop and check them out.

That one in your link says junior, but I think it's just the amp.

Led Zeppelin songs sound cool and are easy to play - Heartbreaker, Black dog etc. You could try the Stairway to Heaven solo too. Learn basic chords, then scales. Then try the tabs of your favourite songs to learn more of the rarer chords.

Squiers are alright guitars, that package should do you fine for starting out.
(Personally I'd suggest an acoustic guitar, as it builds finger strength quicker. But often it is a lot more frustrating to play then an electric guitar for beginners. In the end if you want to play an electric guitar then get an electric so you keep yourself interested.)

Guitar Hero III not good enough for you eh? :P

i tried starting guitar once but it didnt exactly work out for me

you should start on acoustic until your fingers calice over and you can work your way around the geet with chords

thats what i did, as soon as i went to electric it was like riding a bike, except no strings

I'm thinking of learning too, because I need guitar in some of the songs I made and will make.

I saw some at the pawn shop, and I'm thinking used is the way to go. I'll write down the names of the guitars they have, and search online to see which one is the best for me.

That goes for amps, pedals, and whatever else I might need.

Granted, it's used, and the pawn shop will still rip you off if you let it. Tell him you'll give him X amount, and he will likely cut you a break.

I saw some tom toms in there for $100 and he was willing to sell them for $75. used they go for 115-145 (online search) he said.

So you might be able to get a good deal.

Make sure it isn't ****ed before you buy it!

I'd say all this, but really, you don't need to.

If you're playing electric guitar, then it's really just the Shit. Tabs are so bloody easy: line represents the string, number represents the fret. Then you just practice. Play along with tunes you have tabs to.

Voila.

All this shit about "friends, tutors", "plucking", "getting used to syncing" is really only necessary if you're deadly serious (and you have the concentration of a sloth), or you're learning classical guitar.
