Hey, question about steam. Say i go buy CS:CZ. Do i get a cd-key that i enter into steam? Or if i do not buy the game, that means i download it from steam and pay, right? This going ot be the same for CS:Source? Just clearing some of this stuff up. I stopped playing CS a while ago when everyone starting hacking and now i wanna get back into it. Thanks for your help. Sorry if its a stupid question.

also, anyone else get that message saying HL is running on a version of windows and cant play or something?

Ty

You can either buy the game in a store, which will install Steam and the game onto your system, or you can download the game from Steam. Either way, you'll need some sort of activation key to play the game.

WON has been shut down. You must use Steam now.

so for me to play hl multiplayer, i have to pay for steam?

Steam is free. Buying halflife will enable you to play any HL mod (over steam). Buying CS:CZ will enable you to play the beta of CS:Source.

Ya, I bought a CZ cd key of ebay for $14, got it in an email minutes after the auction. Loaded up Steam, put in the CD-Key and within 20 minutes I was playing CS:Source beta.

One of these days I will get around to playing CZ.

Steam is basically a distribution platform + gaming center.
It is a sort of a "Main menu" before you start any game.

Since WON servers are shut down, and won't be re-opened, you must play using STEAM, if you want the latest version and want to play over the i-net.

If you already bought HL (any flavour), you gotta have a cd-key which will entitle you a legal usage of the steam network (for gaming of course).
The STEAM itself is free, you can log in, but you won't be able to play anything.

Other possibility:
Use CS 1.5, and play over your local LAN (latest version, 1.6, requires STEAM to be active).
