I've read 6 books by this girl (2 trilogies) and she's quite good. The two series are called The Age of the Five and The Black Magician. If you haven't guessed by the titles, she's a fantasy author. One of the things she does is she explains magic in the books. Magic isn't pointing a wand and saying some words or it can't make crap appear out of air and it isn't mystical. It's done in a very deliberate and limited way, especially in Black Magician.
Once criticism I'd say is that sometimes there doesn't seem to be a huge amount going on in the world and all the characters just waddle on doing their own thing without the plot seeming to be going in any particular direction. This is especially true in Age of the Five. It does all tie up in the end though.
The Black Magician is the better series, I think, with Age of the Five being somewhat predictable (I had guessed pretty much all of the gods' horrible secrets almost a book in advance of them being revealed).
Also, she's an Ozzie!
