Haha I agree with everything you said this time. Well said. You're awesome bog

Since you have come to your senses I shall not harm you. Too much...

.bog.

Here is something that I wasn't aware of, that removes some of the console-ness of the 360 for those that oppose.
The online Final Fantasy for the 360 supports a standard USB keyboard.
I don't have the slightest idea if they will make games that will support USB mice or if thats possible, but if a keyboard works - why not? :D

So if valve - or any other company, releases a game for the 360, it could quite possibly support mouse controls, we know it can support a keyboard. Thats up to game developers themselves whether they want to code for special input types. Shouldn't be hard.

MS have said a few times that they'd never implement mouse control, or allow it, in games for the 360. I'm all in favour of this.

Warbie, you're in favour of them NEVER IMPLEMENTING it?
Or did I misunderstand you?
Anyway, it's too bad they won't support USB mice..
Afterall, the PS3 supports USB keyboard+mice in games, such as UT2k7, that's great for FPSes.:p

I am. If there was a choice of pad or mouse in fps on the 360 it would cock up the balance on Live (those with a mouse having a clear advantage) and also cock up the difficulty settings in single player (Halo being very easy on the pc compared to the rock hard challenge it offered on the Xbox gives some idea what it may be like). I'd rather developers concentrated on one control method for each format they were working on. In the case of the 360 this should be the joypad.

Personally, I prefer using a pad for most fps. I agree that titles like UT/Q3 etc work far better with a m&k. A pad just isn't quick or precise enough for the twitch aiming these games need. Playing them with one would put a low ceiling on an otherwise massive learning curve - which is what these games are all about. For all other fps (i.e. all the ones that a pad is quick enough for) I prefer using a pad.

Which is one of the best things about X-Box live. The level playing field

Warbie, it wouldn't be that hard for MP/XBL, it could be a setting when you create matches, "Allow keyboard/mouse players, yes or no".. Simple as that..
But then again, that's to personal preference, and yes, SP would be the biggest issue.. But anyway, I see the fact that the PS3 gives the devs the ABILITY to use mouse as a positive, why? Because imo, in terms of controls etc, a dev can never have too much freedom..:)

I'm a big fan of mouse control - it's just the keyboard part that sucks.

Compare Oblivion on PC with the Xbox 360:

PC:
With a mouse/keyboard, using the mouse to look around and steer is perfect. But the keyboard is clumsy as it can be. You press caps lock on and off to run, and Ctrl to sneak - I still have trouble switching these on and off when engaging enemies. If your character has a high speed, trying to do dexterous activities like picking flowers or picking up some armor off of the ground, when you press forward, he moves instantly very quickly forward. There is no precise movement. Again, the looking and steering of a mouse is unmatched, but the keyboard is clumsy as shit.

Xbox 360:
The game pad is sort of a compromise. The looking and steering is very good because it is still analogue - meaning you can turn and look very slow, very fast, or anywhere in-between. With the gamepad, you control your character movement much better. If you want to take 1 step forward, you just lightly press forward on the 2nd analogue stick. If you want to run, you just press forward all the way on the stick, and anywhere in between will produce different walking speeds.

You guys already know this I'm sure. We have talked about it in the past. I'm not sure why I even typed it.

What we need is a half a gamepad for your left hand (a one handed analogue stick and digital pad with a trigger and some other buttons), and use the mouse with your other hand. :D It looks like Nintendo made something like that - but instead of a mouse they use a motion sensing controller.

I think this whole discussion of the potential control scheme is pretty useless right now. We don't know what they are working on and it could be anything from "a traditional FPS, RTS, RPG or delving into new genres" (Gabe Newell, here).

And as we all know, the Source engine can and is being used for much more than just FPSs. I would wait and see what they announce and then worry about the controls. I can't imagine never using a M/K with any console though.
