(this is a mirror of http://www.msblog.org/?p=746# which is currently down cause it was dugg)

Build 5384.4 should be released later today to the public! Here are the download links that you will use, but remember that they are NOT active as of this posting, but should be active later today.

BTW, please note that this is a beta that still has many months of work ahead of it. Some things such as the UAC and performance will be improved (trust me, I've seen the UAC improve every build)

Get Started:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

If you dare to install a beta OS, post your impressions of it here :)

Note to mods: Could someone please change the topic title to "Windows Vista Beta 2 Released", please?

I didn't think the Union Aerospace Corporation had the ability to improve the build :D

UAC stands for User Assault Core - it's a program inside Vista that is similar to Windows XP Remote Assistance, but instead of helping another user, it punches them in the face for making stupid smart arse internet comments. :dozey:

:) :D

They also have office 2007 in public beta. Can anyone tell me what will happend when office is released. Will the beta get an update from the net telling it not to upen unless you puch in a CD key, or will you still be able to use the beta but simply not be able to patch it untill you payed for it. And what about this beta build of Vista.

Sorry for the OT, but the Google Video Thread proves your quote wrong, Gray Fox.

IIRC, the CD-Keys that are generated expire eventually (probably sometime next year), so you could use it anytime up to that point I would think.

Even if there is no such system, why would you want to use a beta OS for important things? Sure I guess it "works", but there are still driver issues, performance issues, bugs in a lot of programs, software compatibility issues, etc etc...

One really annoying thing right now for playing games with Vista is that Punkbuster doesn't support Vista, and every punkbuster server it kicks me saying "Inadequete O/S Privelages", even though I have the UAP off :)

People in XP x64 suffer from this problem too I hear.

The game I'm trying to play is America's Army btw.

Sorry, I meant from your sig.

My friend got Vista from his cousin, who works in Microsoft.

Incidentally, I like cheese.

Beta2 is publically released!

Go download it if you want to play around with it! :)

edit : Nevermind...

So uh, does this install over XP? :|

bryanf445: It depends... Do you like trying out beta software? This is not yet capable of being your primary OS yet (IMHO), so do what I do and put Vista on a seperate hard drive and dual-boot.

xlucidx: Yes.

Meh, I'll stay away and wait for people to post pics / videos of it :D

is it worth it?

still bugy, but there are number of awsome graphical improvments over XP,

or just buy the final version March/2007

The link works but... You should go back to the main Vista beta 2 page so you can sign in and get a cd key. It might work better then. :)

ehh i guess ill try to dual boot, i have to read how to do that, unless its common sense how to do it

Hmm, wends the CPP suppoesd to come out?

in the coming weeks, Microsoft will start the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP) for developers and IT professionals who are not members of the subscription services.

Anyone have a more specific date?

Anything worth noting other than graphical stuff?

ill try to dual boot
It SHOULD do it automatically.. Just put Vista in another partition or disk and when you boot your computer up, it will ask which one you which OS you want to use. Ive done this with Win 98 SE and XP Pro a few times.

Thanks, those links weren't active when I posted this a few hours ago, but now they are. I replaced the links on my first post.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

That's the link if anyone needs it.

Dual-booting will happen automatically. You don't have to set anything up.

Shodan: Tons of things, there is a 90mb word document / product guide available on their site that tells what you get with Vista... I suggest you read through it.

Death.Trap: This is the CPP.

Yeah ugh.. I'm using their download manager and I keep getting disconnected after it slows down to nothing.

I found out that is actually m$'s server that's disconnecting me. Donno why...

Site is getting _hammered_, so either way a day or two, or use your own download manager and download them that way...

what would you recommend? and wouldn't downloading with another manager be just as slow?

I recommend waiting for another day or two, or start looking for mirrors (but you must realize that if you use 3rd-party mirrors aka torrents)

It would have been awesome if Microsoft released a torrent of this... At least it wouldn't kill their servers.

Other than that, I'm not sure... I mean for the Connect builds we get, I usually download them from the UK (as they are usually in bed when we get the build so their content server has minimal load), so while the US is getting really shitty speeds (even though it is in Seattle and I'm in Wisconsin), getting it from UK is still faster due to it having nobody accessing it at the times I get the build...... Not sure you can use that for this build though to get it fast.

should i use filezilla

I just dowloaded filezilla becuase microsofts download manager stoped a couple of times then after 295mb it just stoped and said fatal error:frown: . So basically i don't want that to happen agian. I'm trying to make it work with filezilla: i put "sftp://http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/beta2/en/x64/iso/vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x64fre_client-LB2CxFRE_EN_DVD.iso"
But it didn't connect...it just said "unable to resolve host name", "unable to connect", am i doing this right? Will the connection be just as bad as the manager microsoft provided if i do get it to work? Thanks.:)

use leechget or flashget.

i'm using flashget at the moment and my download speed is always dipping or just coming to a halt, i expected that though, i imagine there is an insane amount of people trying to download it.

shouldn't this be in hardware/software ?

ordered my dvd of it im to lazy to download it. kinda sucks though that it takes 2 to 4 weeks for delivery

edit: also i hope nvidia updates there nforce 4 drivers for vista they have only done graphics

i was going to order one, but i thought it was going to be free and would ship in a reasonably time, i mean, they sent me sp2 for free and that took like a week, but most people i know who also ordered one took around 2+ weeks, so i think i was lucky.

destrukt: Yea it should be in Hardware/Software... Oopsies.

giant: All you have to do is wait a day or two and you will be able to download it at decent speeds, or find a mirror by then.

I guess it's cool to have the physical media however...

Next month should be a great build for us Connect testers because it will incorporate a lot of new feedback from the entire world and not just our little select group :)

well still like i said theres no windows vista drivers for nforce 4 only the nforce 3 unless theres a beta i dont know about, but im sure by the time i get the beta in the mail thier could be updates.

How does this work? Can i access my files, internet and stuff? Can i switch back whenever i want to XP?

Im scared :(

I have heard that Vista will have Trusted Computing in it. That sucks... big time.

Soo, does the beta have jiggly windows and a 3D desktop?!

Alright basically if you have a second hard drive it's a piece of cake. If you have only one hard drive, then I suggest not installing Vista unless you _really_ know what you are doing.

If you have a second hard drive, just pop in the DVD install to the second hard drive, and then anytime you boot up, you will get a screen that gives you the options of the two OS' you can boot into XP or Vista... You just select which one you want (or it chooses the "default" one which is set to Vista if you don't make a choice after 30 seconds, so you can still turn on the computer and walk away to get something to eat while it's starting up)

You can still access everything on your old hard drive, yes.

Yes you can switch back to XP anytime you want... If you are "done" with the beta, you can just format the other drive and then you will only have XP once again.

xlucidx: Hold your mouse button over a window and shake your hand real fast and you can make it jiggle! :-o User-powered jiggles!
