I was at my local EB this afternoon trading in some games when I had a conversation with the manager whom I know fairly well. He told me that earlier this morning the Vivendi sales rep for the area visited him to discuss HL2 and the realease date.

The rep told the manager that VU is not putting any pressure or arbitrary deadlines on Valve for the release of the game - they just want to ensure that the final product is the absolute best that it can be. The rep said that they had learned from last year's fiasco and don't want a repeat of it in any way.

In one way I guess this is good news in the sense that VU truly do want to ensure that the final product is top notch. The downside would be that it gives Valve a lot of leeway for incessant "tweaking" that who knows how long that would take.

Anyways, just thought I'd pass that along.

It's good to hear there's no pressure from VU on Valve. let them finish it in their own time. It''s good to hear that some publishers are still aware of what makes a game good (Electronic Arts, LucasArts, you two taking notes?)

That was exactly my reaction Kal...

What I didn't post in my original was what the manager said to the rep, he told me that he said to the rep that "At least that sets you apart from EA" and at that, the rep didn't say anything but had a big smile.

It's no news tbh...Valve has repeated this for over the last year

VU have no right to put pressure on VALVe, VALVe don't owe VU anything. I'm sure hundreds of publishers would jump at the chance to publish HL2.

It's nice to hear at last that Vivendi aren't putting any pressure on Valve to ship it though.

Publisher's could have a lot of leverage to get a game out there. I can imagine companies like EA etc. putting fierce deadlines on the developers.
