Like the topic says, with the entry of Direct X10, Vista, & the GeForce 8800 type DX10 cards; what improvements would like to see made in the Source engine such as?

  • Graphical improvements

  • Artifical Intelligence improvements

  • More character interaction

The improvements I would like to see in Source is definatly graphical improvements. Its just going to be amazing to see what the next Half-Life will look like in 3-5 years, especially with the introduction of Windows Vista, Direct X10, & the Direct X10 video cards that are going to be released + also as the years and months go by the graphic's will only get better, Guarenteed. Its going to be a very good run

Thoughts? Coments? Questions? :)

None of those really have to do with Source. I mean, anyone can make a super high def game or mod in Source. Character interaction is about the specific game, not the engine. I don't really know much about AI and if it's built into Source or what.

Like riom said it is already possible to make a VERY graphically-rich game with the source engine. I believe the max texture resolution source can handle is 2048x2048. Most source games use 512x512 for the majority of their textures. They could also use models with many more faces but they don't. The reason is that developers want to reach as broad an audience as they can, which means low requirements are good. Once the majority of half-life 2 fans have a dx10 card we may begin seeing valve utilize it.

Better artificial intelligence would be great but I'm not holding my breath. This seems to be something coders are having trouble making big advances in. I think an improvement in AI goes hand in hand with improvement in animation tools. That combine soldier can have the best AI around but if the developer can't convey that to the player than its all for nothing.

More character interaction seems like a safe bet, at least from valve, they seem to thrive on it these days. What I would love to see is valve and squaresoft teaming up, as I consider them the best in the business when it comes to making the player feel for a character.

I'd like to see better AI + animation improvements.

Valve will utilize DX10 features with HL3, because knowing valve it will take 5-6 years to develop, perhaps a whole decade.

Pfft...always about the graphics.
This urge to have a almost real-life images is killing the creativity.
Many people are dissing the Wii because it doens't have the graphical capacities of the PS3 or 360. But it has so many more to give, just imagine the possibilities with the new controller.

If I want real-life scenery I go outside...
I hope this trend will cease.

And for improvements:
More free roaming (less lineair levels)
More physics fun...like creating your own traps, weapons,...
More epic...

And if they get the graphics right then I'll hope they'll be able to create a real-life world that doesn't look like ours. Something totally alien with other laws of physics...that'll be cool :bounce:

grtzz

Less-linear levels = Mapping Nightmare

Especially in the optimisation area...

Unless Valve decide to use anything but .bsp.

you cant do the same things in real life as you can in a game that looks like real life.

Grand Theft Planeto: Earth, huh?

I'd really like to be able to see some method for creating custom animations of your own based on the software filling in the gaps between 2 frozen positions. It wouldn't be perfect, but it would be more than what's available now. Also, I'd like to see animations work across characters like it did in HL1. As it stands now, animations are locked to the model that uses them (so the animation for a rappelling CP soldier can't be used on Alyx, Mossman, etc. ). While I understand why you can't transfer animations from something like a Headcrab to Barney, it doesn't make sense to me why humanoid characters can't have their skeletons moved from one body to the next.

If the next HL game's visuals ever look like the HL2 concept art, I would die of starvation & my keyboard would get all distroyed because of me drolling all over it.

I'd like a lot better physics and a tone down of bloom. Man bloom like gets and your eyes and makes em bleed!I feel sorry for gordon.

better physics???????? the physics in source are amazing!! how could you make it better? well more particles probably but other then that idk.

A new engine completely, completely future gen.
It's abilities? Surprise me, I like that the best.

Corpses and things not fading away when you look away for a moment, or just plain having more of them. Never more then 3 dead bodies in the Episode One hospital at any time.
Or the Nova Prospekt turret battles.

Hair physics then everyone won't have short hair.
Better AI animations sorta like fear were the AI can dive for cover or knock over stuff for cover. Make them look like they are doing something.
Better Physics being able to crush stuff like what the advisor did
Better HDR When it works it looks great but usally it just over exposed

I'd like a real time 'what you see is what you get' mapping editor. Hammer is beyond outdated imo. I'd also like to Source be able to handle larger maps and there to be a finer grain to the surface grid.

Hammer gets lightning preview with the ep2 SDK.

We just wait.

Source already licensed Havokk for physics - could they license Euphoria as well? It aims to make realistic body movements (I mean live movements, not ragdoll). It's probably the engine technology I'm most excited about for the future right now, it would be great to see it or something similar in the Source engine.
