Working out?

My dad says he runs not to keep fit, its a good way to clearly see something youre thinking about or thinking of doing. The fitness you get out of it is just a bonus.

So people exercise for different reasons.

These days, people have become obsessed with fitness, calorie intake yada yada yada. Before someone turned around and said ''Calories make you fat!'', nobody really gave a ***t. We all got on with our lives and lived how we wanted.

Now that every ***king advert on TV, on billboards and in magazines portrays men and women with perfect bodies, you basically HAVE to be lean, muscular and sexy with washboard abs for women to feel attracted to you, and women need to be super sexy with the perfect ass, flat stomach etc etc etc.

We're ***king up humanity too if you think about from a natural selection side of things. Women choosing only men that have the perfect physique dumps their genes into the gene pool more than other men's, and suddenly we get this perfection of humanity every time a baby is born, like something out of Sparta.

Look at the next Calvin Klein underwear advert you see. 90% of that advert I guarantee will be the upper part of the model's ''perfect'' body. IT'S ***KING UNDERWEAR FOR ***K SAKE!

And those god damn perfume adverts. I cant smell it, so why do I need to see a woman and a man inevitably sprayed with water, ''hunting'' or chasing each other with sexy eyes etc down a corridor or whatever?

Advertising is the only thing making us chase the perfect body, and its the women's fault as they want what they see in cosmopolitan and heat magazine.

You could be the greatest guy on the planet, but if you dont have the physique, you're stuffed, women wont look twice at you.

Well, enjoy your lonely lives then ladies.

Its silly to assume that what you see on tv with male and female models is meant to depict the 'perfect' body. It does create a sort of mainstream idea that does put pressure on males and females to say go to the gym and not eat anything etc, but the truth is, that not everyone thinks that a guy has to have loads of muscles and perfect lean body for a girl to fancy him, and then girls need to have these physically fit and lean bodies etc for guys to fancy them. Its largely down to a singular person's tastes, and the way I see it, that whoever creates these adverts with these models must be very nieve if they think that that is the generalized view of a 'perfect' body.

Very true. Not to mention pretty much 100% of these images will have been edited to such a degree that not a single person in existence looks like them anyway...

Yeah but its like the recent Top Gear episode that had Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz on it and Clarkson said that they must be what we look like at the peak of evolution. I mean Clarkson has come out with ridiculous statement before but that just made me laugh.

I agree that not everyone goes for the 'ideal person', i.e. heavily muscular or incredibly slim, but it's one of the few stereotypes based in truth. You might not agree with the image yourself, but the media has destroyed the lives of a good number of people with it. Obviously I'm pointing a finger relatively blindly, here. I can't say for sure that those women had bulimia solely due to the media, but the image put forward certainly didn't help.

There must be a reason for this relatively new insecurity, and it must be down to this particular imagery, implying that there's some general attractiveness behind it.

I got a chin-up bar in my flat, so I do chin-ups and pull-ups about every other day. I also do push-ups occasionally, usually 2x65 (a couple of years ago I could do 2x80, but I've been slacking off). I've also started doing sit-ups, but it's a real stuggle and hurts like hell. I guess it will improve with time, though.

Yeah, but are you a girl?

I'm hardly the epitome of femininity but I do fall into the 'female' catagory. :p

.

Very true. Though it takes a severe level of vanity to effectively torture yourself in order to appear 'sexy'... it's quite sad really...

I think the vanity is caused by insecurity and perhaps impressionability.

On this note, it may be useful to note that the levels of testosterone and oestrogen may affect a person's tastes.

So because she doesn't fit into the category of stereotypical female she has more testosterone than normal? Not entirely sure what you are implying here.

You implying ima butch!? :p however, i am still actually female, and i don't have unsightly hair growth so i think my testosterone levels are sufficiently low.
Plus i do know other girls who don't like a whole lotta muscle so i'm not alone.

Maybe I over-reacted, but I think it is certainly true that alot of women will head straight for the guy who looks like he works out, is slimmer etc than your average guy. Its a fantasy, and that fantasy has grown from advertising and seeing celebs in films.

It just makes it harder for average man to get what everyone deserves with a woman.

Talking of testosterone, I dont think Ive ever laughed so hard watching Mock The Week when it came back this year. Cant remember the name of the guy who said it, he's a British comedian who's a bit camp, and they do a section called ''If this is the answer, what is the question?'' based on recent things in the news.

The answer was 3.5 billion, and this guy said ''Is it the total amount of men in the world who have a lower testosterone level than Serena Williams and her brother Venus?''.

(The question was actually how much it's predicted to have cost South Africa to host the World Cup)

Jesus I died laughing.

Nah, you guys inferred that. Although, yeah, I did a pretty good job of implying it ;)

What I was suggesting that girls with more oestrogen - big boobs, bums, your typical model - are more likely to be attracting to the guys heavily dipped in testosterone - great big man tits, tree trunk arms, etc.

I'm sure you're a lovely human bean.

I actually like girls with muscle. Athletic girls are really attractive to me and I'm not really sure why. I always had a thing for high jumpers and sprinters... and obviously volleyball girls - but that was probably the spandex.

I think I like strong girls because I'm less likely to accidently break them... like that big retarded guy who pets a kitten too hard.

Let the blonde bimbos have their muscled idiots, but the rest of us will have proper relationships.

Yeah but the problem with that is that at some point in the future, when you're with your girlfriend or wife, usually when you're out together at somebody else's place and you're across the room from each other, and you catch her just looking at you, without saying anything.

In her head she's thinking ''How did I end up with this ugly mother ***ker?''

But you are assuming that all the guys that are with girls in good, long relationships are ugly, when it simply isn't the case. All of it is completely irrelevant because when it comes down to looks and what have you, its all down to preference, and if the girl doesn't think the guy is attractive then they simply wouldn't get together in the first place, or the relationship wouldn't last at all. When it comes to a relationship really standing the test of time, it comes down to the love aspect, and for that to be strong they must each find each other perfect, and not care about any of their flaws, or about anyone else in the world in terms of how attractiveness. So if the girl is looking at the guy and thinking that, then why the hell is the girl still in that relationship?

Seriously if anyone here's been brainwashed by the media it's you...
Do you really think looks always matter in a relationship? Or is it just that anyone who's not what the mainstream considers 'awesomely attractive' is ugly? Attraction is relative. What one may find gorgeous another may find offputting. You can't assume everyone is only attracted to what the mainstream points at and goes "This is g o o d- l o o k i n g , now, Find. It. Sexy!!!"

Yeah its like there is this universal attraction to Megan Fox. I personally cannot stand the sight of her, much to the confusion of my mates, but I really do not see why so many find her attractive at all, she is simply not my cup of tea. And take shows like Dollhouse, where Joss Whedon recruited Miracle Laurie to play November because he said he thought she was gorgeous, she isn't all athletic and slim, she is just shapely. It further proves my point at just how wrong the mainstream idea of a perfect body or person is, because everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

I do martial arts, which is a hell of a lot more fun than the gym and every bit as good for your fitness.

Saying that, I can't count the number of injuries I've picked up this year and one trip to hospital...

Still, I can't imagine anything more dull than spending time at the gym. Probably why hardly anybody who decides to "get fit" actually sticks with it. I've lost a little over two and a half stone since January, and if anything my diet and drinking is worse than it was before. Doubt I would have seen those results by going to the gym.

how the **** did we get derailed so hard.

cmon. back to muscle tips people. and running tips since i'm just starting to run again and shit i can't do it for shit anymore.

What kinda running do you do? Sprints or endurance?

Usually I'll do sprints for a half mile around the block and endurance on a treadmill for a mile or more.

I'm a pretty skinny guys and really just want to be a little bit stronger, so I can be confident about lifting something heavy and not being afraid of dropping it.

Most workouts (with legs/lower back etc...) I do at home, but other then situps I really don't know how to exorcize my abs and thats where the gym comes in handy (for me at least).

No I dont really think that, but when was the last time you heard a woman go ''phwoar'' at an average guy hiding a barrel under his shirt.

Of course its all relative to each individual woman. But I guarantee the vast majority of guys that work out, are doing so to get more women, because women want guys with that type of body.

And how can I be brainwashed by the media when Im screaming out against it?

You don't get a lot of fat male strippers. This is a shame since i have rhythm and a fetish for working class women on hen nights.

I workout to have the second greatest body in Hl2.net

The 1st goes to short recoil/terminator.

I start with cardio as a warm-up, alternating between sprinting and light jogging for certain distances. Then, I do ab workouts, followed by switching between arm and leg workouts. I do it almost every other day. On the off days, I run 2-4 miles.

Always wanted to pick up jogging/running. Too lazy, settled for crunches and push ups which at least got me some visibility on the abs.

What do you mean visibility? I want to get at least a 6 pack abs but so far all they've done is get harder.

Fun fact: nobody has abdominal muscles until they work out. True story.

Just position yourself under the bar and listen to me. Alright, here's what you're gonna do. You're gonna take all the weight on your neck. Then, you're gonna jam your legs down and hyperextend your ankles and then shoot back up and lock your knees in place.

You do? Lol.

Anyway, I guess I should contribute to the topic at hand: I try and run a few miles a day, but it gets hard, because of my location. Nowhere to excercise, etc.

Run in place.

I know the key to the stereotypical 6-pack is diet, but I doubt I'm willing to give shit up, hell maybe in the future if I'm desperate enough, but I'm sort of content atm (rated by number of stares from hot females at the beach :naughty:).

If I recall correctly, for your abs to be visible your body fat percentage must be at a level of around 6-8%. So while sit-ups and crunches may help in stimulating muscular growth, it really isn't until you're at that level that your abs really show.

Has anybody else wondered what the average volume of shit per bodybuilder is btw?
