science fiction is speculative fiction ..it usually deals with worlds that could be ...gullivers travels is pure fantasy with no grounding in reality

(Not to be a pain here, I just enjoy discussing this topic.)
Does this mean we can't count anything as science fiction that makes a leap thats not actually feasible? Star Trek and Alien would get an okay, but Honey I Shrunk the Kids! and Back To the Future because they're impossible? Is the burden placed completely upon how well-realized the future they create is?

Or do we just open the door completely to anyone who wants to say it could happen, which seems to be the current method. To refer back to what I was saying, if Gulliver had traveled by a gateway between dimensions ala Sliders would it all of a sudden be science fiction?

well there's always science fantasy ..sci-fi is just an umbrella term to describe a whole whack of subgenres

and no to the sliders thing because that would change the entire premise of the story ...gullivers travels is closer to Alice in wonderland than 2001 a space oddessy which is hard science

2001 would definitely count, since its one of those core movies for the genre. Everyone can agree on things like Blade Runner, Farenheit 451, Metropolis, The Day the Earth Stood Still, etc. Its at the edges where it starts to get fuzzy.

(And it certainly would change the premise of Gulliver's. The question is whether just shoe-horning something psuedo-scientific automatically creates science fiction.)
