Well, disregarding the old and fatally derailed thread, there's nothing on this yet, so...

To put it simply, I'm surprised at the turnout the Channers managed to get. Relatively successful protests in Sydney. Melbourne. Brisband. Adelaide. Manchester. London. Boston. Edinburgh. Brussels. Buffalo. New York. New Orleans. Toronto. Winnipeg. Los Angeles. Philadelphia. Pittsburgh. Phoenix. Honolulu. Houston. Dallas. Minneapolis. Atlanta. Chicago. Vienna. Portland. Seattle. San Diego. Milwaukee. Vancouver.

I don't know what effect they're going to have on the Church of Scientology, if any, but the ability to coordinate and stage world-wide protests by the web-group "Anonymous" is going to get some scaremongers racing in the US of A.

God I know /b/ is a seething pit pit of inhuman malice and insane mindless screams and blackness impenetrable, but they are doing something good and noble for a change.


If all they can do is start the ball rolling against public open disrespect and contempt against Scientology, then they have redeemed themselves somewhat.

Numbers are kind of skewed, but the turnout was remarkably high. Some 5500 in North America (US and Canada), 1400 in Europe. 1 in Japan.

Wow, impressive turnout. I had envisioned a couple embarrassed teens in hoodies waving A4 'placards' made out of notepaper, to an audience of nothing. I just hope anon keeps the ball rolling on this one.

They'll probably just protest for a while then get bored and circle-jerk about how awesome they were :p

Um, read up and find out? For starters, in many countries it's not acknowledged as a religion at all. The CoS was responsible for the biggest infiltration into the government in US history, is watched by the security services in Germany (where it risks being banned completely and good ****ing riddance). The church routinely abuses the right to free speech by silencing critics of scientology under a flurry of libel laws and copyright abuse claims. They also consider any critics to be 'fair game', the 'fair game' policy meaning that anything goes against that person - stalking, intimidation, blackmail, claims to the critic's neighbours that the person is a child molester, stuff like that. It has a policy of forced disconnection by which subscribers (for they have to pay many $$$) to Scientology have to sever contact from friends and family if they want to progress in the church. The organisation basically manslaughtered Lisa McPherson and have been implicated in several other shady-looking deaths.

On top of that, it's an organisation that wields an inordinate amount of power. Despite their practices they can (and do) just litigate and harrass their critics into silence in the US. They mysteriously received tax-exempt status there in 1993 - no one had expected them to succeed in their claim for tax exemption, and it's speculated that they blackmailed or 'converted' someone high up in the IRS. The head of the press association in Greece is a scientologist. The metropolitan police in London seems to have formed an unhealthy attachment with them, with the most senior officer in the Met being a guest speaker at the opening of a new Scientology Center. Officers have also randomly received 1000's-worth of 'gifts' from the CoS, which is also granted privileged access to emergency and security alerts by the police. (Note: Scientology does not even qualify as a religion in the UK)

So why not ****ing protest?

It's fine to protest against an action of a religion... but to protest against someone's belief... it's just bizzare!

It remains to be seen. I doubt it, personally. Every time there's a raid a bunch of people want to set up the next one immediately--generally, that never pans out. 3/15 would indeed be symbolic, but anon's too busy hating himself in the wake of 2/10.

It's not a religion. It's not even one of those crazy cults - it's a corporation that bleeds it's members dry while pretending to be a religion/cult. There have been quite a few deaths connected to Scientology.

And on top of that they ask for tax breaks. :rolleyes:
