This is rich:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/1/5/933554/-Bill-OReilly:-God-causes-the-tides-not-the-moon

O’Reilly: I’ll tell you why [religion's] not a scam. In my opinion, all right? Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can’t explain that. You can explain why the tide goes in...

Silverman: Tide goes in, tide goes out...?

O’Reilly: Yeah, see, the water — the tide comes in and it goes out, Mr. Silverman. It always goes in...

Silverman: Maybe it’s Thor up on Mount Olympus who’s making the tides go in and out...

O’Reilly: No no, but you can’t explain that... you can’t explain it...

Silverman did a really shitty job given such a big opportunity. But yes, Bill, actually we can explain it:

Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth.

BTW: This is funny because Bill O'Reilly is an idiot.

But God made the moon and the rotation of the Earth. I agree with Papa Bear.

I thought gravity made the moon and the rotation of the earth?

Ahh...but who made gravity? Shit you got me, I'm going to church Sunday to find out.

wow you'd think his producer would tell him to shut up or cut his mike or something. that's just pure stupidity

But I would assume he actually thought of this question long before the interview started since the topic of the interview was if religion is a scam. You would think the guy has access to wikipedia over at fox news, but then again it wouldn't shock me if encyclopedias were banned there seeing how encyclopedias are a liberal fraud. Instead he must have thought in his head that this was truly a brilliant question that would stump anybody.

I was going to make a joke about how they only have access to Conservapedia, but then I looked up what they had to say about tides...

http://www.conservapedia.com/Tides
When the moon is collinear with the sun and the Earth, then tides are stronger; when it forms an angle with the Earth and the sun, tides are weaker.

Wow, even they are smarter than O'Reilly.

It's a question of integrity and I think Bill abandoned his the moment he realized his on-air act funded heated toilet seats and prostitutes. Some people are perfectly fine trading their souls for cash. After all, In God we Trust is written on the damn paper.

HERE'S HOW I ROLL:

thats god that takes a bath in the ocean so the water rises,he is invisible

Eh, what?

Come on Sheepo, this is elementary knowledge. About 12,000 years ago the Earth got too close to the Sun (Sun's gravity was pulling it in) and it was about to slam into the Sun when all of the sudden the 8 other planets lined up in a row, creating a chain of gravitational pull, grabbing the earth and ripping it from the Sun's grasp. Thus the Earth was saved, but not without a cost. The Sun managed to hold on to one part of the Earth long enough to rip out a huge chunk of it, eventually even that chunk was snatched by the chain-linked gravity, and then when the planets unaligned, it released both Earth and mini-Earth, allowing them to revolve a safe distance around the sun. Mini-Earth, too young to survive on its own without support from its mother, decided to stay home awhile longer, and thus it revolves around Earth. Earth doesn't like mini-Earth though, what with the lack of life and whatever, so it decided to officially abandon it, stiping mini-Earth of it's last name, and thus it had to assume a bastard name, choosing Earth.

I feel like i'm a ****ing 1st grade teacher having to explain that to you.

Classic Fox. It's rather depressing to consider that he's the best one of all of them.
Shep Smith is actually considerably decent. It's just that he says level-headed things so no one pays him any attention.

I don't wanna sound like a douche but can't you get in trouble with the Treasury for snapping any pictures of money?

It wouldn't be a federal crime so who cares.

I don't wanna sound like a douche but can't you get in trouble with the Treasury for snapping any pictures of money?

Because someone is totally going to use a 2MP partial picture without a serial number to counterfeit cash.

Because someone is totally going to use a 2MP partial picture without a serial number to counterfeit cash.

Are you implying that the government wouldn't press charges because the illegal act wasn't effective?

also is just me or every one seems his name as bill o'really ?

Gravity pulls matter together. Planets as well as the moon exist because of gravity. Gravity is also responsible for the rotation of the earth.

I suppose if you want to get into the really vague sense of it. I just imagined it sort of like this:

a) All objects in the universe are attracted to each other, therefore:
b) The moon came into being and the Earth spins

Well as far as I know it's not a really vague way of looking at it, it's actually fairly specific. The fact planets and moons exist is due to small chunks of matter being attracted to each other by gravity and as a result forming larger chunks of matter. Eventually after billions of years this process forms a planet and/or moon (although in our case the moon was likely created as a crash between 2 planets). The way gravity does this is also likely responsible for the planet's rotation.

No, I understand your reasoning fine, it's just not really the answer the question is looking for. If I was in elementary school and asked my fourth grade teacher where the moon came from and why the Earth spins, and she said "Gravity," she would be being a crappy teacher. Even if it's technically right and will shut me up, I don't have any idea what the answer means.

That explanation is sort of like going into the kitchen of a restaurant and thanking the chef for making your food, rather than thanking your waiter for bringing it to you.

No, I understand your reasoning fine, it's just not really the answer the question is looking for.

Which question where? I must have misunderstood your "eh, what?" comment, I didn't think you were actually asking me for a detailed explaination of this process. I just assumed you were questioning the accuracy of my statement.

I never had the intention of shutting you up, I guess I just have no idea what you are are actually asking me.

So you are saying when you said "eh, what?" to my comment about gravity you were actually asking me to explain in detail where the moon came from and why the earth spins? Sorry that I did not understand that this is what you were asking, how silly of me.

I would be happy to answer your question but since I'm by no means an astronomer you would probably be much better off by searching around for an answer to this question on your own (you tube, wikipedia, etc, etc, etc). If you are actually asking this question seriously I'm sure I can point you to some links and resources that I find helpful.

Well, I actually had a back and forth breakdown on every post in this conversation, because that sort of thing seems to be increasingly necessary with you, but that seems to have disappeared, so whatever.

Look, you said gravity created the moon and the Earth's rotation. I can see how that's technically true, but the leap from gravity to moon seems a rather big one, so I was wondering what you meant/whether you knew what you were talking about. You responded, and I realized what you meant and that you did. I responded, merely to explain my confusion and point out that I thought the logical leap from gravity to moon with nothing between was a little silly to the point where it didn't actually explain anything. I also say something about a question, in reference to the unspoken but obvious question at the root of this conversation, "WHAT CAUSES SUCH AND SUCH?", not thinking any one would take it as a real thing. But anyway, at a certain point this became hostile, I guess, so hear.

So you are saying when you said "eh, what?" to my comment about gravity you were actually asking me to explain in detail where the moon came from and why the earth spins? Sorry that I did not understand that this is what you were asking, how silly of me.

Well jesus christ, you literally said "Gravity is responsible for the moon and Earth's rotation, right?" and then I said "What?" to that specifically, what else would I want to know about? Or should I not expect you to consider the context of your own posts?

Bill O'Reilly is god...? I thought this was well established among humanoids.

That explanation is sort of like going into the kitchen of a restaurant and thanking the chef for making your food, rather than thanking your waiter for bringing it to you.
???

Surely that's better, I mean, it's harder to make the dish than to carry it around.

LOL @ Bill O'reilly (I need to see what the daily show and Countdown do with this /face palm action)

*shake head at pointless arguing in thread.

Yeah, you are totally right Sheepo. From now on when responding to a very general statement (god made the moon) with another very general statement (gravity did it) I will be sure to give specifics nobody asked for (and likely nobody cares about) just so you don't find something to bitch about.

I think I'm finally starting to figure this out. Stern has Vegeta, I have you.

nah sheepo has this reaction whenever a thread mentions christianity

I am surprised no one made a joke of

"tides,how do they work?"
