i was reading this article in Theinq.com, and shocked when i saw this

It seems the revenue of around 150 million Euros a quarter from its millions of subscribers is just not enough for the company to start resolving technical issues that are growing as the number of gamers continues to rise.

i mean wtf thats alot of money !!11

The Truth...
[SARCASM]MMO's don't really need all the money from subscribers to keep up the servers/update the program.
They are cash cows with gold studded udders.[/SARCASM]

yes because money always solves programing troubles

Exactly.

What the **** do you expect them to do? Toss a cheque at the server machines? Insert nickels into the air vents?

from what I can tell, WoW is like crack, and i dont use drugs.

WoW is only like crack for those without willpower! :P

I would like to know how much of that revenue is profit. In any case with money you can hire more programmers, buy better equipment. So while it doesn't solve the problems in itself it helps a lot.

I have an article in a PC Gamer about MMO fees, and in the end they came to the conclusion that the monthly prices were pretty much justified. I'll see if I can find it again and quote some bits.

oh noes! :(

btw anyone know where I can patch 7.1?? its rly small but I have all patches cept that one.without I have download 250mges :( with dial-up

If they get 150M per quarter then that is 0.6G per year. Euro. They don't spend 0.6G on administrating their games. Heck, didn't HL2 have a budget of USD 40M?

That translates into 2.5 million users of WoW, btw (assuming 15euro price tag). What a cash cow.

.bog.

so? it's not like Blizzard doesnt work their asses off to consistently deliver top notch games ..I cant think of any blizzard flops can you? (I remind you that ghost hasnt come out yet)

Hence why there are so many MMORPG's around. When they work they'll make you millions.

true.
i guess its fair to say most here would agree that Blizzard deserves these wads of cash...just like Valve does for making such a fantastic game in Half Life 1/2 and the expansions... this is something gamers shouldn't be all that upset about and it doesn't look like anyone is either ;)

Yeah, because Blizzard are just good samaritans and just want to make other people happy by breaking even and not making profit from a business. If thats the truth then why do game companies such as Valve charge £30 a game to make profit when they don't even care if they make money from there business?.

I agree, i think Blizzard are one of the best games companies around, and they've been around for a hell of along time because of one thing alone that people don't seem to understand, they make amazing games and WoW is no exception to be honest. So why shouldn't they rake money in..thats the nature of a business, you do good, it pays off, you do bad, you go bankrupt.

Thats awsome. Keep the WoW bastards hungry. If they make more money, perhaps the next Starcraft will be better.

Meh, I lost interest in Blizzard after Warcraft 3 came out. That and I knew this kid that was the biggest Blizz fanboy ever. So annoying! That turned me off them too.

People are amazingly addicted to WoW. I played the stress test and had enough for a while. My friend played the stress test enough to win a closed beta spot...hardly played the beta then bought the full game when it came out. He played SO MUCH that he was top on the server for PVP and got the highest ranking possible. He has nothing left to work on (he admits it) and he STILL plays the game month after month because it's, "something to spend time on"...the kid apparently doesn't like to go and buy other games as long as he can waste time and money on WoW.

They charge $50 and only make about $7 per game. Store takes money, publisher(Vivendi) takes massive part of that cut....yeah..

I agree though.
No damn Developer makes because they "want" to(except ones that completely charge free). They all charge to make money, money comes first for all companies. Then it goes to how to make that money. This may be constructed a community, making a game that intrests people, it's to get you to buy there game so they get money.

Soo true. When Starcraft BW has more people playing online than any other RTS(Besides Wc3TFT, but even there extremely similar in number of players), and it was made in 1998.....since then no other RTS has been able to beat it? Thats true quality right there.

Ghost, between *whenever it was announced* up until E32005 was not Blizzard Entertainments project. Rather it was Nihilistic(Then Swingin Apes in Fall 2004). Basically Nihilistic couldn't get the game working, Blizzard was just doing cinamatics...Blizzard then thought Nihilistic was doing a bad job and gave it to Swingin Apes, Swingin Apes was then acquired by Blizzard during E3 2005.
Basically, Blizzard has only really overlooked ghost and made sure it wasn't a failure.

But yeah..Blizzard deserves the $$$...now umm....of course..wheres Sc2!!!

I don't. Blizzard will not and I repeat will not let a game come out with there name on, and be bad.
Consider this:
Nihilistic was oringally making the game, and blizzard was making the cinamatics. All the delays were Blizzard delaying it for Nihilistic. Blizzard doesn't fund Nihilistic so all those years Blizzard didn't really loose a single dime. Eventually Blizzard and Nihilistic agreed that Nihilistic well....wasn't "needed" any more....the nice way to put it.
Blizzard then gave it to Swingin Ape Studios, then acquired them in 2005. If Swingin Apes was doing a bad job why buy the company? Obviously Swingin Apes was bought because they showed they new how to make a game, and well they were located close to Blizzard.

Blizzard has showed an exceptional way of not letting a bad game be released. But as far as we can tell, it can only be good from well, Blizzard acquiring Swingin Apes.....
Currently Sc:G has been in production since Fall 2004(When Swingin Apes was put on for it).
