anything like this out there?

could be really cool to read one.

Only book I'm aware of is Raising the bar, if you mean Novels, (I.E stories based on other people during the events on HL1/2) then I don't know

There should be some real fan written books tbh.

i mean books that describe the plot of HL\HL2. might be books that describe events not in the games but which have relevence to the story and such (for example - the 7 hour war).

doesnt have to be books though, links to well written fan-fiction will be much appreciated (well written means not some 7 year old "omfg gordon blew da sh*t out of the vortagan!?#@!#" bs, although these can be entertaining to read :smoking: ).

I hear he has published some books in the past? Anyway, to the thread starter, read 1984 and use your imagination, you'll get there eventually.

Yeah, he started off as an author and there are several books out there. I haven't managed to get ahold of them but I've heard nothing but good things. Not Half-life related though.

Nah, I really don't wanna see HL plastered on other forms of er... entertainment. It's a game, leave it as that. Sure, there's fan fiction, but don't publish it.

I don't mind reading books that are inspired by HL though.

If only Laidlaw would write some *dreams*

go to fanfiction.net and go to games and half life 2. that should sate your thirst for a while.

There's something about a book as compared to online fanfiction. Generally quality-wise. But also the fact that you don't need to stare at a constantly refreshing source of light in order to read it.

And the characters don't pair off into badly written sex scenes in novels, unless of course you're reading that type of novel.

:laugh:

I'm actually slightly surprised that Laidlaw hasn't produced any novels (whether or not they're direct novelisations) of the HL games. But I suspect he feels that he'd be doing Valve a disservice, and would be better served by keeping his talents confined to the in-game narratives...

There was years back a site name Writer's Block which had alot fan-waritten stories and novels that are based on the HL world. Some of them were really good but I think the site died. Anyone got info about it?

As about to Laidlaw's stuff , there is that 1000 page HL Bible he once mentioned. Someone leak it please :)

Reading that would probably give everybody simultaneously an orgasm.

Novels would rock. The first and third Halo novels kick ass, partially because they take place before and after the games, but to actually novelize any of the HL games would suck, do the stuff in between or what transpires off-screen and I'll read 'em.

Wouldn't it be funny if it was a direct novelization of the game...

"He shot twice, and killed the headcrab. Then he walked down some hallways, and saw a zombie. He switched to his shotgun and killed it in a double-shot. Then he switched to his crowbar to break the vent cover. Then he crouched and crawled in. Then he turned his flashlight on."

And at the top of each page it showed the current health/armor/ammo :laugh:

And then the reader goes;
"Hey I didn't do that! I was out of ammo for the shotgun! This book isn't faithful to the game!"

I miss Half-life novel too. But we should read books written by Marc Laidlaw such as:

* Dad's Nuke (1985)
* Neon Lotus (1988), nominated for 1988's Philip K. Dick Memorial Award
* Kalifornia (1993)
* The Orchid Eater (1994)
* The Third Force (1996)
* The 37th Mandala (1996), awarded the 1996 International Horror Guild Award for "Best Novel"

I'm sure it's great stuff!

In rasing the bar there's a few short stories based on earlier hl2 environment ideas used to inspire the team. They're a bit short, but a good read nontheless.

One day, I will read from that book.

I could go for a Half-Life novel. There's a lot of material there to pick from: The Black Mesa Incident, the Seven Hours War, the uprising in City 17. You can go even further back, before humans entered the picture, such as the Great Migration Event and the colonizing of Xen, perhaps told from a vortigaunt perspective. It's a big universe.

With regard to Laidlaw's books, am I the only person in this thread so far who's read any? The 37th Mandala is good stuff. Go get it.

I haven't read any, no bookshop or library seems to have any and I'm not desperate enough to turn to the internet yet.
