From one of my favourite films. I used to know somebody who looked just like her so she was easy to paint :)
Just took cocking ages.

Ta Bliink :)

...and can't forget Charlize...

Whoa!

Niiice job mate, really well done!

I really need to sleep right now, but I'll give more detailed impressions later... :P

This is something I did as one of my first photoshop (2.5) self tutorials back in the mid 90's when I bought my first PC - it was built up using clipping paths. If I'd known anything about 3D modelling I could have done it in a fraction of the time, but it was good practice and fun fun fun :D

What can I say, I'm a graphical pimp :P

Some more old sigs - they looked better on the right coloured background:

Another self tutorial around the same time as the mech - my first digital painting with a pen n pad :D

Very cool CR0M, now if you do a tutorial you can be the 2D Guru guy so I don't have to be :E

Thanx doodz.
They're not ALL week long paintings - charlize took an evening. But Marianne De Morangias (Brotherhood of the wolf) took 10 evenings :O

Elf, you need a goatee to be a guru which counts me out ;)

Messed with the levels and sharpened it up a bit, looking much better. Chris Achilleos, eat your heart out.

week long is easier than explaining all that in a title :p

and draw a goatee on your face then :p

I haven't done a picture thats taken a week in god, years or something now, no patience for it.. take longer than a day and I get incredibly bored of it.

I'm the complete opposite, I can't sketch quick stuff fo' shat - wish I could.
That painting I just finished took ages but I'm happy with every part of it, it kept my mind focussed, and it's eye candy that can be stuck in a portfolio in the future. Even saved it in several stages of development if anyone is interested in seeing the working process.

Jezus Freaking Christ, we have here more art talent than Disney.

Yeah.. we should all work together to make a cartoon.

How about one with toys that come to life.. no, ok how about fishes? no.. superhero's? naa.. hmm..

Lets not bother.

The only crit I had was that it was too soft/blurry for my tastes, and now you've gone and fixed that too!
I can't say alot of bad things about your art so far! :)

Oh, and I'd be very interested in seeing the working progress...

Edit: Oh, and btw The Dark Elf, are you really interested in HL2? It just seems like you're here for the community, you don't seem to be a gamer... ;)

ta, yeah it's still a bit blurry cos it's been reduced from print size. Damn you, 72dpi. The original is sharp though and printed like a dream on glossy photo paper today at work. All the old stuff like the samurai is blurry cos I didn't really know what I was doing :)

There's porn? where?

yeah, I have to agree - looking at it on my TFT at home now the face looks too hard. Ah well, as close as I can get without posting the original, just have to live with it :P

I'll see what I can do about getting the work in progress files together, Sorze.

I liked the original.. didn't find it too soft and the background color worked, had a more stylish feel to it.. the second one like I say, seemed too forced, original had more feeling in it like you'd done it for enjoyment, second felt like you'd done it for a client :)

Ahh, see what you mean - lol I must be too conditioned at work

I did enjoy doing it, been ages since I've done something for myself. Just added the usual bunch of after effects I use to tidy up a job. I'll probably play with several backgrounds and compositions before It's completely 'finished' anyway - the brown doesn't print too well.

What did you do it in, Photoshop or Painter?

Show some close up sections.. i had to :p hehe (besides its a good excuse to show off ;))

Oh and if you use Painter, you got hold of v9 yet? Mine finally got sorted tonight, been fooling around on it, muuuuuuuuuuch nicer than previous versions. A lot faster too. Anry is gonna love it cause the brush he uses (if he still does) works perfectly now :D:D:D

I used PS, but painter will always be one of my preferred art packages.
A great painting I did earlier this year with Painter got lost along other artwork when my old harddrive went tits up :(

I stopped caring about my art around the same time I lost a few years of work ages back.. More recently I just wiped everything I'd done, reminds me that if I did it once I can do it again and better.

Step by step guide of the areas in the order they went down in the Marianne painting.

Each area is painted on it's own layer so I can concentrate as much as I want on it. It can also be switched on and off whenever I want.

Started with the face - always start with the face, as this is the part that draws the eye and usually needs the most work. From there I build from the farthest objects to the nearest so subsequent layers overlap previous ones giving more depth to the final image.

^ Layer 2 - face detail

^ Layer 3 - hair / scarf

^ Layer 4 - waistcoat / scarf detail - this layer took the longest, f*ck knows why

^ Layer 5 - jacket

^ Layer 6 - gold stuff detail / right arm

^ Layer 7 - left arm

^ Layer 8 - musket detail sketch and rendering

Thanks alot CROM, I appreciate it! :)

You did that one in photshop?
You use alot of airbrush, right?

Just wondering, do you use painter as well as PS?

Cheers mate!

A lot of people use PS, how about Zbrush, I personally never used but from what I read on their site it seems really cool, can do what ps does and can even render 3d.
Has any of you here tried it and how did you like it if you had.

Btw thnx for those work in progress, now it would be just complete if you made a tutorial.

no problem sorze.
Nope, I always switch off airbrush - I find it too unpredictable to paint with, just use the basic brushes in photoshop to spot fill areas and the smudge tool to blend colours like a drybrush.
I guess I still paint in a similar way to oils, really.

ZBrush soo doesn't replace Photoshop.

and why is there always one person in these threads who have to bring Zbrush up.. it plagued mine for a few pages IIRC :p

Grey Fox, Zbrush is a 3D modeler and displacement mapper, not really in the same field as 2D painting apps like painter and photoshop. Not to say it can't be used for flat images though. And yes, it IS really cool if it's used for the right thing.

and 3D images always look like 3D images no matter how good they are...
But a 2D painting can sometimes look real.
